Choose Capture node screenshot. Chrome captures that individual DOM node and saves the image to Downloads on Windows and macOS.
Choose the screenshot command that matches the scope
Chrome’s DevTools screenshot commands capture different areas. Use the command attached to the DOM node when you need one element; use the viewport or full-page command when you need more.
| Command | What it captures | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Capture node screenshot | An individual DOM node | Right-click the target node in the Elements panel’s DOM Tree |
| Capture screenshot | What is currently visible in the viewport | Use when you need the visible screen rather than one selected node |
| Capture a full size screenshot | The whole page, including content outside the visible viewport | Use when you need a full-page image |
Common snags and what to check
-
You do not see the command: make sure you right-clicked the element’s node in the Elements panel DOM Tree. The node command is not the general webpage context-menu action.
-
You cannot find the node: activate the Select an element tool or use the platform-specific shortcut, then click the element in the page to locate its node in Elements.

The image contains more or less than you need: confirm that you chose node, viewport, or full-size capture according to the scope you want.
-
The element is embedded or in a scrolling container: Chrome’s documented basic procedure does not establish how every unusual embedded-content or scrolling case will render. Inspect the saved result rather than assuming those cases always capture identically.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots in a script or workflow rather than an occasional manual capture, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture an element by CSS selector; its options also include full-page capture, viewport presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, and waiting for a selector. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters. For example, this cURL request captures a page image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Quick Recap
This example requests a page screenshot; it does not specify an element selector. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
