How to Capture a Selected Area of the Screen on Windows, Mac, or Chromebook

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use your computer’s built-in screenshot controls and select the part of the display you want: press Windows + Shift + S on Windows, Shift + Command + 4 on Mac, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows on a Chromebook. Then drag over the region and save or copy the capture. The controls and default save locations differ by operating system, so follow the section for your device.

Windows: select a region with Snipping Tool

On Windows, Windows + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool overlay. From there, choose a rectangular or freeform snip, select the part of the screen, and then edit, copy, or save the result. Microsoft’s instructions are at Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

Take a rectangular or freeform snip

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen becomes slightly gray while the capture controls are ready.
  2. Choose the rectangular selection for a box-shaped capture, or freeform selection to trace an irregular outline. Snipping Tool also provides window and full-screen modes.
  3. Drag across the area you want. For a rectangle, start at one corner and drag to the opposite corner; for freeform, trace around the content.
  4. Open the resulting capture in Snipping Tool if you want to annotate, crop, or share it. Use Ctrl + C to copy it or Ctrl + S to save it.

Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. Its guidance also documents the copy and save controls above; if you cannot find the image, check the Screenshots folder and the Snipping Tool window.

Capture a menu or other short-lived interface

A menu often closes as soon as you move to start a capture. In Snipping Tool, use the delay option and select a delay from 1 to 5 seconds. Start the capture, open the menu during the countdown, and then select the area once the screen capture controls appear. The countdown gives you time to reveal the content; it does not keep a menu open if the app itself closes it.

What if the selection needs adjustment?

For an irregular object, use freeform rather than trying to crop a rectangular snip around it. For content contained in a single application, Snipping Tool’s window mode may be more convenient than dragging around the window by hand. You can also edit or crop a completed capture in Snipping Tool.

Microsoft documents a Perfect screenshot feature that can adjust a rectangular selection to frame prominent visible content, but it is limited to eligible Windows 11 AI PCs/Copilot+ PCs. It is not a requirement for taking a normal snip.

Mac: drag a crosshair around the area

On a Mac, press and release Shift + Command + 4. The pointer becomes a crosshair; drag it over the region and release to capture. Apple’s instructions are at Take a screenshot on Mac.

Select and reposition the capture box

  1. Press and release Shift + Command + 4.
  2. Drag the crosshair from one corner of the region to the opposite corner.
  3. Release to take the screenshot. Press Esc before releasing if you want to cancel.

If the selection box is the right size but in the wrong place, hold the Space bar while dragging to move it without changing its dimensions. This is useful when the area is carefully sized but needs to shift slightly to include or exclude an edge.

Save, edit, or copy the screenshot

By default, the screenshot is saved to the desktop. A floating thumbnail can be opened for editing. To see the broader screenshot controls, press Shift + Command + 5; the Screenshot app’s Options menu lets you set a timer or choose a save location.

To place the capture on the clipboard instead of saving a file, hold Control while using the screenshot shortcut. You can also Control-click the thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. This is useful when the next step is pasting the image into a message, document, or image editor.

Apple’s Screenshot app instructions apply to macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. Apple also describes SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF format choices on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later; those optional format choices are not needed for a basic selected-area capture.

Chromebook: use Screen capture and choose partial screenshot

On a Chromebook, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open the screen capture controls. Choose Screenshot, select partial screenshot, and drag across the region. Google’s step-by-step help is at Take a screenshot or record your screen.

Capture a partial screenshot

  1. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. On some keyboards the Show windows key has a rectangle with lines beside it.
  2. In the capture controls, select Screenshot, then choose partial screenshot.
  3. Drag over the portion of the display you want to capture.

The controls also offer full-screen and window screenshots. By default, a Chromebook capture is copied to the clipboard and saved in Downloads. Google says you can change the save folder through Screen Capture settings.

Use the on-screen control or an external keyboard

If you would rather not use the shortcut, select the time in the bottom corner of the screen and choose Screen capture. If an external keyboard does not have a Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative shortcut. Google’s keyboard reference also covers additional Chromebook key combinations: Chromebook keyboard shortcuts.

Chromebook tablets use Power + Volume down for screenshots, according to Google’s shortcut reference. Touchscreen and external-keyboard controls vary by device, so use the on-screen Screen capture control if the keyboard combination does not match your hardware.

Choose the right capture shape and destination

The fastest method depends on whether you need a precise region, a whole application window, a temporary menu, or an image ready to paste. These built-in controls handle ordinary screen captures without separate hardware or a paid screenshot service.

Device Selected-area method Other useful modes Default handling documented by the platform
Windows Windows + Shift + S, then rectangular or freeform selection Window, full screen, and a 1–5 second delay Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved to Screenshots; Snipping Tool provides copy and save controls.
Mac Shift + Command + 4, then drag the crosshair Screenshot app controls, timer, and configurable save location Desktop by default; clipboard capture is available with Control.
Chromebook Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then Screenshot and partial screenshot Full screen and window Downloads by default and copied to clipboard; the save folder can be changed in Screen Capture settings.

Use a saved file when you need to attach or archive an image. Use the clipboard route when you want to paste immediately. For a menu or transient interface, Windows’ documented delay is the platform-specific option covered here.

Troubleshooting selected-area screenshots

  • The shortcut does nothing: Confirm that you are using the shortcut for your operating system and that you pressed the keys together. On a Chromebook, the external keyboard may not include Show windows; try the on-screen Screen capture option or the listed Ctrl + Shift + F5 combination.
  • The image is in the wrong place: Check the platform’s default destination: Microsoft documents Screenshots for Windows, Mac defaults to the desktop, and Chromebook defaults to Downloads. On Chromebook, the capture is also copied to the clipboard.
  • You need to paste but no file is visible: Check clipboard behavior. Chromebook captures are copied automatically; on Mac, hold Control with the screenshot shortcut or use Save to Clipboard from the thumbnail. On Windows, use Ctrl + C in Snipping Tool.
  • A menu disappears before capture: Use Snipping Tool’s delay option on Windows, set it from 1 to 5 seconds, and open the menu during the countdown.
  • You selected too much background: On Windows, choose freeform for an irregular outline; on Mac or Chromebook, adjust the drag boundaries and retake the shot. On Mac, hold Space while dragging to reposition a selection box without resizing it.
  • An app’s content appears black or unavailable: Some apps may block screenshots of their windows. Apple names Apple TV as an example. A screenshot shortcut cannot necessarily override an app’s restriction.
  • You are on a tablet or touch-first Chromebook: Google documents Power + Volume down for Chromebook tablets, while other touchscreen and keyboard controls can vary by device. Use the on-screen Screen capture option if the physical keys differ.

Or skip the browser setup

The platform shortcuts above capture your computer display. If what you actually need is an image of a web page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for a desktop screenshot shortcut. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Install Python’s requests package if needed, then run this complete example to save a web page screenshot as shot.webp:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API and its options. The same request pattern can be used from other languages:

const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo has 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is on every plan. Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, capture by CSS selector, custom viewport and device presets, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers and cookies, caching, async jobs, bulk capture, and usage reporting. For a web page—not an arbitrary region of your computer display—ScreenshotNeo is the relevant product to consider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture only one application window instead of dragging around it?

Yes. Snipping Tool on Windows and Chromebook’s Screen capture controls offer a window mode; select that instead of a partial region.

Can I take a screenshot of a web page rather than my computer display?

Yes. A browser screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo captures a web page URL; the built-in shortcuts in this guide capture the display you are using.
