In the editor you can annotate, copy the image, or save it as a PNG. The Snapshot toolbar button provides the same workflow when you prefer to click instead of using a shortcut.
Take a screenshot in Opera GX
- Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want to capture and let the content you need appear in the browser window.
- Start Snapshot. Press Ctrl+Shift+5 on Windows or Command+Shift+2 on macOS. You can also click the Snapshot camera icon on the Opera GX toolbar. Opera describes Snapshot as a built-in feature, so no extension or separate capture program is required. Opera GX Snapshot details.
- Define the capture area. Drag the selection frame around the part of the page you want. You can select a small region, a larger section, or the entire visible browser area.
- Open the editor. Click Capture. Opera GX opens the result in its Snapshot editing view.
- Annotate if necessary. Use the available tools to zoom, draw arrows, blur sensitive information, highlight an area, draw with the pencil, add text or emojis, or include a selfie-camera image.
- Export the result. Choose Copy and Close to place the image on the clipboard, or choose Save Image to select a location for a PNG file. Opera’s feature documentation also describes copying, editing and saving as normal Snapshot uses. Opera Help: Features.
Keyboard shortcuts and the toolbar
Windows
Use Ctrl+Shift+5. If another application or utility has claimed that key combination, click the Snapshot icon instead or review Opera GX’s shortcut settings.
macOS
Use Command+Shift+2. The toolbar camera icon is an equivalent entry point.
Linux
The official Opera GX material reviewed here does not specify a separate Linux shortcut. Use the Snapshot toolbar icon, or check your Opera GX shortcut settings rather than assuming the Windows binding applies.

What “full screen” means in Opera GX
Snapshot distinguishes between the content currently visible on your monitor and the complete page from top to bottom. Opera Help calls Capture Full Screen a capture of the entire page currently visible on your screen—the viewport. It is a single image of what is on screen, not a documented promise of one tall, scrolling image containing every section below the fold.
Capture the visible viewport
Choose the full-screen option in Snapshot when you need an image of the current viewport. This is useful for documenting a visible error, showing a design state, or sharing exactly what is on screen.
Save the complete page as a PDF
For a page from the top to the bottom, Opera Help directs you to the browser’s Save page as PDF option. That produces a full-page PDF rather than a long PNG or JPEG. The support page states: “You can select Capture Full Screen to take a screenshot of the entire page currently visible on your screen, also known as the viewport, or select Save page as PDF to save the full page, from top to bottom, as a PDF.” Read the documented distinction.
Opera’s marketing description uses the phrase “visible-page capture.” Read that as the currently visible area, not as confirmation of a scrolling-image workflow. If you specifically need a tall image, the standard documentation reviewed here does not establish that Snapshot creates one.

Editing and sharing the capture
Mark up sensitive or important details
Use blur before sharing account numbers, private messages or other information that should not leave the screen. Arrows, highlights, pencil marks and text can direct a viewer to a control or error. Zoom helps make a small interface detail legible, while emojis and the selfie-camera option are available for more informal annotations.
Copy versus save
- Copy and Close: places the finished image on the clipboard so you can paste it into email, a document, a chat or an issue tracker.
- Save Image: writes a PNG to a location you choose. Use this when you need a file attachment, a durable record or a predictable image format.
If pasting does not work, save the PNG instead; that avoids clipboard permissions and gives you a file you can attach manually.
A reliable capture routine
Snapshot captures the browser state that is visible when you invoke it. For repeatable results:
- Wait for the page’s main content to finish loading before opening Snapshot.
- Scroll to the section you need and check that overlays, menus and notifications are in the intended state.
- Resize the Opera GX window if the viewport dimensions matter to your documentation.
- Keep the selection frame inside the intended page area; browser chrome outside the page is not part of the webpage itself.
- Use blur or crop before copying a capture that contains personal information.
Troubleshooting Snapshot
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
First click the webpage so Opera GX has focus, then try the shortcut again. If it still fails, another application may be intercepting the key combination. Launch Snapshot from the toolbar camera icon and review Opera GX shortcut settings. On Linux, use the toolbar because the official feature material does not provide a dedicated Linux shortcut.

The camera icon is not visible
Open the browser’s toolbar customization or use the shortcut for your platform. If the icon is hidden by a compact toolbar layout, expanding or customizing the toolbar restores a clickable entry point without changing the page.
The result contains only what I can see
That is expected for a viewport capture. Snapshot’s documented full-screen mode covers the visible viewport. To represent the entire document from top to bottom, use Save page as PDF. The reviewed official documentation does not verify a built-in, single-image scrolling capture.
The selection is too small or starts in the wrong place
Cancel and reopen Snapshot, then drag from a clear corner of the intended area. Ensure that a page overlay, menu or browser control is not covering the region. You can crop and annotate after Capture, but selecting the correct area first reduces editing work.
I need to hide private information
Open the capture in the editor and apply Blur before choosing Copy and Close or Save Image. Check the final image at full size; a small blur can be easy to miss when the screenshot is reduced.

The page is long and images are missing
Snapshot operates on the current browser view. Scroll through the page first if content appears only after entering the viewport, then capture the visible state or save the complete page as a PDF. A standard Snapshot image should not be described as a guaranteed full-length rendering of every lazy-loaded section.
When a browser capture is not the right workflow
Opera GX is convenient when a person is already looking at the page and needs a quick, edited image. Automated documentation, scheduled captures, many URLs, a specific device viewport or a full-page image requires a different workflow. In those cases, a screenshot API can take the browser setup out of each capture.
