How to Capture a Screenshot After a Button Click with Puppeteer

Click, wait for the page state you need, then capture with Puppeteer. Includes safe navigation waits, element screenshots, troubleshooting, and a ScreenshotNeo URL-based option.

Click the button, wait until the page reaches the state you need to document, then call page.screenshot(). For an ordinary in-page interaction, Puppeteer’s locator API is a good default:

await page.locator('button.save').click();
await page.waitForSelector('.success-message', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-click.png' });

If the button navigates to another page, start the navigation wait and click together with Promise.all() so the navigation cannot happen before Puppeteer begins waiting. The right synchronization depends on what the click actually does.

Choose the wait that matches the button’s result

A click completing does not necessarily mean the screenshot will show the final visual state. A page may update asynchronously, navigate, or reveal only one component. Wait for an observable condition that corresponds to the image you want, then capture.

Capture after an in-page update

For a form submission, save action, toggle, or other change that stays on the same page, wait for the resulting state rather than relying on a fixed delay. Replace the example selector with an element your application displays when it is ready:

await page.locator('button.save').click();
await page.waitForSelector('.success-message', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'success.png' });

waitForSelector() resolves immediately if the selector already exists, so choose a selector that genuinely represents the post-click state. It supports visible and hidden options; presence alone may not be enough if visibility matters. Its documented default timeout is 30 seconds, configurable for an individual wait or with Page.setDefaultTimeout(). See the Puppeteer API reference for waitForSelector().

When readiness is better expressed as a property or application state than as an element, use waitForFunction(). It waits until a function evaluated in the page context returns a truthy value and can receive arguments from Node.js. See the waitForFunction() API reference.

Capture after a navigation

When a button triggers navigation, begin waiting before the click can trigger it. Puppeteer documents this pattern:

const [response] = await Promise.all([
  page.waitForNavigation(),
  page.locator('button.continue').click(),
]);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-navigation.png' });

Starting waitForNavigation() only after awaiting the click can miss a fast navigation and leave the wait hanging. Choose navigation-wait options to fit the site; do not use this pattern for a button that only changes the current page. Review the navigation API for its options and behavior.

Select the intended button reliably

Puppeteer’s official guide recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements. A locator click checks that the element is in the viewport, waits for visibility and enabled state, and waits for a stable bounding box across two animation frames. It accepts CSS selectors and Puppeteer-specific selector syntax, including text- and accessibility-based selectors. See Page interactions | Puppeteer.

await page.locator('button.save').click();

Make the selector specific enough to identify the intended control. A broad selector such as button may identify the wrong control when a page has several buttons.

page.click(selector) remains documented. It scrolls the first matching element into view if needed and clicks its center; the page-level selector behavior is retained for backward compatibility in the interactions guide. Prefer locators for new interaction code unless you have a reason to use the older page-level method.

Choose a page or element screenshot

Use Page.screenshot() when the evidence you need is the page image. The path option writes the result to a file:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

For a component-only image, wait for the element and call its screenshot method:

An element screenshot attempts to scroll the element into view if it is hidden. The screenshot API returns a Uint8Array by default; setting encoding: 'base64' returns a string instead. See the screenshot API reference.

This example captures a confirmation state on the current page. Supply the URL and selectors for your own application; the documentation does not define a universal selector for any particular site.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com/form');

    await page.locator('button.save').click();

    await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-click.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

For a navigation-triggering control, replace the click-and-wait portion with the Promise.all() navigation pattern above. The examples use documented Puppeteer APIs; API details can vary by version. The current Page.click API documentation search result identifies version 25.12.0, which should not be read as a claim that every API described here first appeared in that release.

Troubleshoot missing or mistimed screenshots

  • The screenshot shows the old state: The click may have finished before the application rendered its result. Wait for a selector, visibility change, or waitForFunction() condition that represents the state you need.
  • The navigation wait times out: The button may update the current page rather than navigate. Use a result-state wait instead. If it does navigate, start waitForNavigation() and the click together in Promise.all().
  • The wrong button is clicked: Narrow the locator or selector so it uniquely identifies the intended control. Page-level click() acts on the first match.
  • A click or wait times out: Check that the selector matches the intended page state and that the element can become visible or enabled. Locator timeouts inherit the page setting and can be set per locator; selector waits document a 30-second default.
  • Element capture fails after a hidden wait: A hidden-selector wait can return null if the selector is not found. Check the returned value before calling screenshot(), as in the guarded element example.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot from a URL rather than a custom Puppeteer interaction, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
