Set Selenium’s browser window to a chosen width and height, load the page, then save a screenshot. For example, a 900 × 1100 window can be a project-specific tablet-width test; it is not a universal tablet size. If the test needs mobile-style device metrics as well as responsive CSS, use Chrome mobile emulation instead. In either setup, verify the page’s actual viewport when testing exact CSS breakpoints.
Capture a screenshot at a chosen width
This Python example resizes the browser before navigating, saves a PNG, checks the save result, and always closes the driver. Replace the example dimensions and URL with your test values.

Choose the right tablet test setup
Resize a desktop browser window
Use set_window_size(width, height) when the goal is to exercise responsive CSS at a selected width in a normal desktop browser context. The values apply to the browser window; operating-system and browser chrome can make the usable page area smaller than the outer window dimensions.

Enable Chrome mobile emulation
Use mobile emulation when the scenario also needs emulated device metrics, such as a device pixel ratio. This JavaScript example configures custom metrics before creating the Chrome driver, then captures the current viewport as a PNG.

Selenium’s JavaScript API documents custom mobile emulation dimensions and pixel ratio, as well as preconfigured device names: Chrome Options API. Confirm that the syntax and options are supported by your installed Selenium binding and compatible ChromeDriver.

Set dimensions that match the responsive question
There is no single tablet width established as the correct choice for every site. Pick a width that tests the CSS breakpoint or device scenario you care about. Record these settings alongside the screenshot so another run can reproduce it:
- Width and height, and whether the orientation is portrait or landscape.
- Pixel ratio when using mobile emulation.
- Browser, Selenium binding, and driver versions.
- Whether the run resizes a desktop window or uses mobile emulation.
If the precise CSS viewport matters, inspect the resulting page viewport rather than assuming the requested outer window size equals window.innerWidth. Selenium’s generic window sizing and Chrome’s device-metrics override are different mechanisms. The versioned DevTools documentation notes that device-metrics overrides can affect window.screen.width, window.innerWidth, and device-width media queries: Selenium DevTools API. The DevTools SetVisibleSize description says it resizes a frame viewport without changing its container and is not supported on Android: Chrome DevTools Protocol: Emulation.setVisibleSize.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The screenshot has the wrong responsive layout: Check the actual inner viewport width in the browser and adjust the setup. Outer window dimensions can include browser and operating-system chrome; mobile emulation is a separate configuration.
- The screenshot file is missing: Confirm the working directory or use an explicit destination path, create its parent directory first, and check the Boolean returned by Python’s
save_screenshot. - The mobile-emulation option is rejected: Verify the installed Selenium language binding and ChromeDriver compatibility. The mobile-emulation syntax is browser- and binding-specific.
- The driver remains running after a failure: Put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock, as in the examples, so cleanup occurs even if navigation or capture raises an exception.
