To capture a React app after hydration, wait for an application-owned readiness signal, then call Puppeteer’s screenshot method. A navigation condition such as networkidle2 can help with page loading, but it does not prove React hydration—or later app work—is finished.
Why a screenshot can be too early
With server rendering, the browser can display HTML before React has attached the component logic that makes it interactive. React calls that process hydration: attaching client-side behavior to HTML previously generated on the server. A screenshot taken as soon as that HTML appears may therefore capture a page that looks complete but has not reached the app state you need.

React’s hydrateRoot API returns an object with render and unmount methods; its documentation does not provide a general hydration-completion promise. React also warns that calling root.render before hydration finishes can clear existing server HTML and switch the root to client rendering. Coordinate the capture with the application’s actual readiness point instead of assuming React exposes a universal completion hook. React: hydrateRoot

Use an app-owned readiness marker
Have the app or test harness set a marker only after the hydrated UI state required for the screenshot is ready. The marker below is an example, not a React API: choose when to set it based on your own hydration, data, and rendering requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
// Set this from your app or test harness only when the required UI is ready.
window.__APP_HYDRATED__ = true;
For example, the marker might be set after the app has hydrated and completed the data or rendering work that the screenshot is meant to show. If your app can render additional content later, decide whether that content belongs in the capture and include its completion in the readiness condition.
Capture the page with Puppeteer
This complete Node.js example navigates to a local React app, waits for navigation to quiet down, waits for the app-owned marker, and saves a full-page PNG. Install puppeteer in your project first; it downloads a compatible Chrome during installation. puppeteer-core is an alternative when your setup manages its own browser. Puppeteer

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
// The app or test harness must set this at the real readiness point.
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.__APP_HYDRATED__ === true);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' followed by a screenshot. Treat that option as a navigation condition, not a React readiness guarantee. Set an appropriate timeout for your environment and make the marker deterministic. Puppeteer: screenshots

| What you wait for | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
page.goto(..., { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' }) |
The navigation reached Puppeteer’s selected network-quiet condition. | That React hydration or subsequent application work is complete. |
page.waitForFunction(() => window.__APP_HYDRATED__ === true) |
Your app or harness says the required UI state is ready, provided the marker is set at the correct point. | Anything your readiness condition does not include. |
| A locator or selector wait | A target element exists or reaches a relevant element state, depending on the wait used. | That the whole app has hydrated. |
Puppeteer locators can wait for elements to be present and in the right state; relevant operations include visibility and stable-bounding-box checks. Those checks help when a specific visible target matters, but they are not a substitute for an app-specific hydration signal. Puppeteer: page interactions

Capture one component instead of the whole page
If the deliverable is a component, wait for the app-owned readiness signal and then capture the element rather than the full page. For example:
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.__APP_HYDRATED__ === true);
const element = await page.$('[data-testid="report-card"]');
if (!element) throw new Error('Report card was not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'report-card.png' });
Replace the selector with one that identifies your target. Finding the element confirms it exists, not that the entire application is hydrated; keep the readiness wait when that distinction matters. Element screenshots can scroll the element into view, and a detached element causes an error. Puppeteer: ElementHandle.screenshot

Set screenshot options for the intended artifact
- Whole page: use
page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true })when the image should include content beyond the current viewport. - Viewport or crop: use page screenshot options such as
clipwhen you need a particular region. - Format and destination: select the required image type and output path with the supported screenshot options.
- Transparent background: use
omitBackgroundwhen the output should omit the default background. - One component: use the element’s screenshot method when a page-level capture would include irrelevant content.
Puppeteer documents page- and element-level screenshots and options including fullPage, clip, type, path, and omitBackground. Check the API reference for the option details applicable to your installed version. Puppeteer: Page.screenshot
Troubleshoot common timing and capture failures
- The screenshot shows server HTML before the expected interactive state. The capture probably ran before the app-owned readiness point. Set the marker only after the required hydrated UI work finishes, and wait for it before capture.
networkidle2passes, but the app is still changing. Network quiet is not a React completion contract. Keep the navigation wait if useful, but add a readiness signal that reflects the specific state you need.- The marker wait never completes. Confirm the app or test harness actually sets the marker, that it can run on the page being tested, and that it is set on every relevant render path. Give the wait a timeout appropriate to your setup so failures surface rather than hanging indefinitely.
- The target selector is not found. Verify the selector against the rendered page and wait for the element if it appears asynchronously. Presence alone still does not confirm whole-app hydration.
- Element capture reports a detached-element error. The app may have replaced the element between lookup and capture. Re-query after the relevant render has settled and capture the current element.
- Hydration produces unexpected markup or a visual change. React expects the client output used during hydration to match the server-rendered content. Treat a mismatch as an app bug to diagnose; React does not guarantee that every attribute difference will be patched. React: hydrateRoot
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than browser automation, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does React provide a standard promise that tells Puppeteer hydration is complete?
No general hydration-completion promise is documented for hydrateRoot. Use a readiness signal owned by your app or test harness.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs waiting for a selector enough to know the whole React app is hydrated?
No. A selector or locator wait can establish that a target element is present or in a relevant state, not that the entire app has hydrated.
