Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a one-off Playwright screenshot, pass CSS text in page.screenshot({ style }). For a reusable CSS file in a Playwright Test visual assertion, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ stylePath }). If the CSS needs to be installed on the page before capture or used in later interactions, call page.addStyleTag() first. These are different workflows with different option names.
Choose the right way to add CSS
| Need | Use | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Apply a short CSS override only for a direct screenshot | page.screenshot({ style: '...' }) |
Playwright applies the CSS while making the screenshot; available starting in Playwright 1.41. Playwright Page API |
| Use a stylesheet file with a visual snapshot assertion | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ stylePath: '...' }) |
For the Playwright Test runner’s screenshot assertion. Playwright visual comparisons |
| Install CSS on the page before capture or further interactions | page.addStyleTag({ content: '...' }) |
Changes the page before the screenshot rather than applying screenshot-time styling. Playwright Page API |
Apply inline CSS to a direct screenshot
Use the Page API’s style option for a one-off capture. This runnable example hides a cookie banner and sets a predictable background:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({
path: 'screenshot.png',
fullPage: true,
style: `
.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }
body { background: white !important; }
`,
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace .cookie-banner with a selector that matches the target page. The !important declarations help the override win against existing page styles. The style option applies while the screenshot is made; it is not the way to install a persistent stylesheet on the live page. See the official Page API reference.
Use a CSS file in Playwright Test
If the screenshot is a visual assertion, put volatile-element rules in a dedicated CSS file and pass its path as stylePath. This API belongs to Playwright Test, not the direct page.screenshot() call.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
import path from 'node:path';
test('page visual snapshot', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
stylePath: path.join(__dirname, 'screenshot.css'),
});
});
For example, screenshot.css can contain:
.cookie-banner {
display: none !important;
}
iframe {
visibility: hidden;
}
Playwright documents this stylesheet pattern for filtering dynamic or volatile elements in screenshot comparisons. The assertion API requires the Playwright Test runner. See Visual comparisons and the PageAssertions API.
Inject CSS onto the page before capture
Use page.addStyleTag() when you want a stylesheet added to the page itself, including for later interactions or captures:

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
await page.addStyleTag({
content: '.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }',
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
addStyleTag() adds a style element from CSS content, or can add a stylesheet link from a path or URL. Unlike screenshot-time style, it modifies the page before capture. Refer to the Page API for the method details.

Stabilize captures and visual comparisons
- Set
fullPage: truewhen the capture should include the full scrollable document. Without it, the screenshot is limited to the viewport. See the Page API. - If animation causes unwanted variation, use
animations: 'disabled'in the screenshot options. Playwright documents that this stops CSS animations, transitions and Web Animations for the screenshot. See the Page API. toHaveScreenshot()takes screenshots until two consecutive results match, then compares the last image with the expected snapshot. A CSS override can remove volatile visual content, but it does not eliminate differences caused by the rendering environment. See PageAssertions.- Keep baseline creation and comparison environments consistent. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state and headless mode. See Visual comparisons.
Troubleshoot CSS screenshot issues
The CSS has no visible effect
- Check that the selector matches the element on the captured page and that the CSS is valid.
- For direct capture, confirm you passed a CSS string as
styletopage.screenshot(). For a test assertion, pass a file path asstylePathtotoHaveScreenshot(); the options are not interchangeable. - If the rule must be in place before other page actions, use
page.addStyleTag()before those actions and before capture.
The test runner rejects the screenshot option
Check which API is receiving the option. stylePath is for Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion, while style is CSS text for the Page API screenshot call. The documented style screenshot option is available starting in Playwright 1.41; consult the Page API and verify the version installed in the project.

Hide or normalize dynamic content with the CSS override, disable animations when appropriate, and keep the browser and machine settings consistent between snapshot generation and comparison.
