Set omitBackground: true in Playwright’s screenshot options and save the result as a PNG. This hides the browser’s default white background so the screenshot can preserve transparency:

Use omitBackground: true in page.screenshot(). The option defaults to false; enabled, it hides the default white background and allows the screenshot to have transparency. Playwright notes that it is not applicable to JPEG images. See the Playwright Page API.

Capture to a buffer instead of a file
Omit path to receive the screenshot as an image buffer, which you can pass to another part of your application or save yourself:

Choose the capture area
Transparency and capture scope are separate settings. Add the relevant option or use a locator screenshot depending on what you need:

Keep the background transparent
omitBackground hides the browser’s default white screenshot background; it does not remove a background deliberately painted by the page. If the result still appears opaque, inspect the CSS backgrounds on html, body, and the element being captured. Make the relevant background transparent if that is appropriate for your page before taking the screenshot.

Use transparency in screenshot assertions
For visual regression checks, Playwright’s test-runner screenshot assertion also accepts omitBackground:

- The image has no transparency: Confirm
omitBackground: trueis in the screenshot options and that you are saving as PNG, not JPEG. - The page or captured area still has a solid color: Check whether CSS sets an opaque background on
html,body, or the target element. The option hides the browser’s default background; it does not erase the page’s own painted background. - You need the whole page but only got the viewport: Set
fullPage: true. - You need only one component: Capture through that component’s locator rather than taking a page screenshot.
- A screenshot assertion rejects the option: Use the Playwright test runner for
toHaveScreenshot; the documented assertion option is part of Playwright’s PageAssertions API.
Format and reliability notes
PNG is the clearest documented choice for transparency. Playwright’s API explicitly says omitBackground is not applicable to JPEG; although the API lists WebP as a screenshot type, its description of this option does not explicitly guarantee WebP transparency. For an output whose transparency is important, use PNG.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does omitBackground remove a background color set by my page?
No. It hides the browser’s default screenshot background. Check the page’s CSS backgrounds if the capture remains opaque.
Can I use omitBackground with JPEG?
No. Playwright documents the option as not applicable to JPEG images.
Can I capture a transparent screenshot in a Playwright visual test?
Yes. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot assertion accepts omitBackground when used with the Playwright test runner.
