Why scrolling matters before a screenshot
Playwright can capture the current viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page. Those are choices about what to include in the image, not instructions to run the page’s scroll-dependent behavior. A map may load markers or tiles only after the user scrolls, pans, or otherwise triggers an application-specific request.

Many pages implement lazy loading with the browser’s Intersection Observer API, which can observe a target relative to the viewport or a specified ancestor. A nested scrolling region may therefore need to be scrolled directly. Likewise, the page’s load event does not mean every resource that will appear after scrolling is ready: lazily loaded images and other media may still be pending. See MDN’s Intersection Observer API reference and MDN’s load event reference.
Choose the right screenshot scope
| Playwright capture | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
page.screenshot() |
The current viewport. | You need the map as currently displayed, including its present zoom and pan. |
locator.screenshot() |
A target element, such as the map container. | You want to isolate the map from surrounding page content. |
page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
The full scrollable page in a tall image. | You need the page’s document content from top to bottom. |
Playwright documents these three capture scopes in its screenshots guide and the Page screenshot API. A full-page image does not necessarily show a larger geographic area: a fixed-size map may still display only its current map view. To capture a broader area, use the map’s own pan or zoom controls.

Scroll, wait, and capture
Adapt the selectors and readiness condition to the site. The example scrolls the document in steps, waits for a marker, and captures the map element. The delay between steps gives page handlers an opportunity to run; replace it with a site-specific signal where possible.
const url = 'https://example.com/map';
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Advance the document through its scrollable height.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(200, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
const height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 150));
}
});
// Replace this selector with a marker or other application-specific signal.
await page.locator('[data-testid="map-marker"]').first().waitFor({
state: 'visible',
timeout: 10_000,
});
await page.locator('#map').screenshot({ path: 'map.png' });
This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested script for a particular site. It assumes the document scrolls and that the named marker and map selectors exist. A map may use a nested scroller, canvas rendering, clustering, network requests, or a different readiness contract.

For a nested scroll container
If the map or content region—not the document—owns the scrollbar, scroll that locator. For example, replace the document-scrolling block with:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →const scroller = page.locator('.map-scroll-region');
await scroller.evaluate(async element => {
const step = Math.max(200, Math.floor(element.clientHeight * 0.8));
const height = element.scrollHeight;
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += step) {
element.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 150));
}
});
Use the actual scrolling ancestor watched by the page. Scrolling the document will not necessarily trigger an observer configured with a nested root.

Prefer a meaningful ready condition
A visible marker is one possible signal, but it may not mean all markers or map tiles have finished rendering. If the application exposes a stronger condition—such as a known marker count, a loading indicator disappearing, or an app-owned ready flag—wait for that condition instead. An arbitrary delay alone is fragile: it may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
When markers are canvas-rendered or inaccessible
Some map widgets draw markers into a canvas or expose few useful accessibility controls. In that case, use the page’s supported interaction model if available; otherwise, a screenshot can serve as a visual reference for coordinate-based interaction. Prefer semantic locators for accessible controls, because coordinates depend on the viewport, layout, and map state. Playwright’s Page API documentation covers page-level interaction and evaluation methods.

Troubleshoot missing markers or incomplete captures
- The screenshot is blank or markers are missing: confirm that scrolling triggered the page’s load behavior, then wait for a marker or app-specific ready signal before capture.
- Document scrolling does nothing: check whether a nested element owns the scrolling and scroll that element instead.
- The marker appears but the map still looks incomplete: marker visibility may not signal that tiles, clustering, or other rendering has finished. Identify a stronger application-level readiness condition.
- The full-page screenshot is very tall but the map view has not expanded: full-page capture covers document height; it does not pan or zoom the map.
- The wait times out: verify the selector against the rendered page and confirm the target marker should appear in the current map state. The site may load it only after panning or zooming.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can capture a page with one GET request; the options include full-page capture and selecting an element with a CSS selector. Its documented clean-shot behavior accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/map -o map.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. This one-call example captures a URL; it does not replace application-specific interactions such as scrolling a nested container or panning a map to trigger more content. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s full-page option scroll the page to load lazy content?
No. It sets the screenshot scope to the full scrollable page; cause the relevant scrolling behavior and wait for page content separately.
Can a screenshot show a larger map area than the current view?
Not by making the page screenshot full-page. Pan or zoom the map itself to change the geographic area shown.
