For a basic full-page capture, run wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 https://example.com/ page.png. wkhtmltoimage calculates the screen height from the page content by default, so a fixed height is usually unnecessary. Set a useful width, allow JavaScript time to finish when needed, and check the image: this older Qt WebKit renderer may not reproduce every modern page reliably.
Capture the page at its full content height
wkhtmltoimage converts an HTML page into an image. Its command form is wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>; for a website, supply the page URL as the input and a filename with an image extension as the output. The default screen height is calculated from page content, rather than being a fixed viewport height. Debian wkhtmltoimage manual

- Install wkhtmltoimage using a package or build appropriate for your operating system. The exact installation steps depend on the OS and package source.
- Open a terminal in the directory where you want the image saved.
- Run
wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 https://example.com/ page.png, replacing the URL with the page to capture. - Open
page.pngand check its width, content, and bottom edge. If the layout is too narrow or wide, adjust the width and capture again.
The --width value guides the screen width. It is not necessarily a strict width unless smart-width behavior is disabled. A strict width can also change which responsive layout the page uses, so choose a value that represents the desktop or mobile presentation you want. Wait for JavaScript-driven content
JavaScript is enabled by default according to the manual. If the page fills in content after its initial load, try a delay and inspect the resulting image:

wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 --javascript-delay 1500 https://example.com/ page.pngThe delay is in milliseconds. It gives scripts time to run, but does not prove that a particular page has finished loading. If you control the page, --window-status can wait until window.status equals a value you specify. This can be more deterministic than choosing a delay, provided the page sets that status when it is ready. Consult the manual for the precise option syntax and behavior. Debian wkhtmltoimage manual
Do not use --disable-javascript for a page whose content depends on scripts; that option turns JavaScript off. Content that appears only after scrolling may still be absent, so inspect the capture rather than assuming a wait alone loads every element.

Choose width, height, crop, and image format
- Width: Use
--widthto guide the rendered screen width. Test the intended responsive layout; add--disable-smart-widthonly when you specifically need strict width behavior. - Height: The default is calculated from page content.
--heightsets screen height, but setting a fixed height is not the basic way to request a full-page capture. - Crop:
--crop-x,--crop-y,--crop-w, and--crop-hselect a region of the output. Cropping trims the capture; it does not load additional page content. - Format and quality: The manual lists
--formatand--quality; quality accepts values from 0 to 100. Use an output filename appropriate to the format you want and check the manual for option details.

wkhtmltoimage uses Qt WebKit, and its upstream GitHub repository has been archived and read-only since January 2, 2023. Treat it as a legacy renderer: page features, scripts, authentication, external resources, and content loaded only after scrolling can affect what appears in the image. Troubleshoot missing or incorrect content
- The image seems cut off: Open the output and determine whether content is actually missing or merely cropped. Remove crop options if present. The default height is content-calculated; a fixed
--heightis not a substitute for loading page content. - The layout is unexpectedly narrow or wide: Adjust
--widthand inspect the result. If you require a strict width, review--disable-smart-width, bearing in mind that changing width can switch the responsive layout. - Text or widgets are missing: If they are script-rendered, try
--javascript-delay 1500and inspect again. For a page you control, use--window-statuswith a readiness value set by the page. - Content appears only after scrolling: A delay does not itself guarantee that scroll-triggered content has loaded. The legacy renderer may not produce the expected page; consider a browser automation option with documented full-page capture, such as Playwright’s
fullPage. - The output format or quality is wrong: Review the manual’s
--formatand--qualityoptions, including the documented 0–100 quality range.
