Save the original image with the page’s full URL and capture time in a separate note. A screenshot records what appeared in a browser; by itself, it does not prove who published the page, when it appeared, or whether the image is authentic.
Capture a full page in Chrome
- Open the webpage you want to document.
- Open Chrome DevTools and turn on Device Mode.
- Open the Device Mode more-options menu and select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Keep the original image and check it for missing or duplicated content.
Chrome for Developers describes this option as capturing the whole page, including content outside the current viewport. Its documentation does not guarantee that every dynamic element, lazy-loaded image, or nested scrolling area will render correctly in the result, so inspect the file rather than assuming it is complete. Capture a full page in Firefox
Use the screenshot button
- Open Firefox DevTools and open DevTools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the screenshot icon to capture the page. Firefox says the image is saved to Downloads.
Use the Web Console
Alternatively, open the Web Console and run:

Firefox documents that the --fullpage option includes content outside the window bounds. If you capture again using the same filename, Firefox warns that the new file overwrites the previous one; use distinct filenames when retaining multiple captures. Firefox Source Docs.
What to know about Microsoft Edge
Microsoft describes Edge Screenshot as supporting full-page and selected-area captures, with markup before copying or saving. Make the capture useful for fact-checking
- Record context: note the full page URL, capture date and time with time zone, browser and version, and any relevant capture settings.
- Preserve the original: keep the unedited image separate from any annotated, cropped, or redacted copy. Label edited derivatives and record what changed.
- Check completeness: inspect the image for missing, repeated, or cut-off content, especially when the page uses lazy loading, sticky elements, or nested scrolling areas.
- Corroborate disputed claims: if the question concerns publication date, source identity, or authenticity, seek other records. A screenshot alone does not establish those facts or satisfy a particular legal or newsroom evidence standard.
A checksum can help identify later changes to a file only when the reference checksum and its custody are trusted. A timestamp, watermark, or checksum does not independently authenticate the page depicted.
When to consider a browser extension
An extension may be useful if you need selection, annotation, blur, or PNG/PDF export in one workflow.
