Snipping Tool cannot document an automatic scrolling or full-webpage capture. Its Full screen mode records the display that is currently visible, not the sections of a page below the viewport. To save an entire webpage, use Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature, which has a Full page option.
If you need a repeatable, automated capture, an API such as ScreenshotNeo avoids browser setup altogether.
What Snipping Tool can—and cannot—capture
Microsoft’s documented Snipping Tool image modes are Rectangle, Window, Full screen, and Freeform. None is documented as a scrolling mode that automatically moves down a webpage and stitches the results together.
That distinction matters:
- Full screen captures the complete monitor view at that moment.
- Window captures the selected application window as displayed.
- Rectangle captures a rectangular area you draw.
- Freeform captures an irregular shape you draw.
A long page can extend far below the visible viewport, so choosing Full screen does not produce a full-page webpage image. Snipping Tool remains useful for a visible section: its editor can annotate, crop, extract text, copy, save, and share the resulting snip.

Capture a visible area with Snipping Tool
Use this workflow when you only need the section currently displayed, a dialog, or the whole monitor view.
- Open the content you want to capture and position the required section on screen.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool capture overlay appears.
- Choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- Select the area or window. For Rectangle or Freeform, drag around the visible content; for Window, select the target window; for Full screen, the current display is captured.
- Open the resulting snip in Snipping Tool. Add annotations, crop it, extract text, copy it, save it, or share it.
Why Full screen is not a webpage capture
Full screen records the pixels shown on your monitor. If a page is 4,000 pixels tall but only 900 pixels are visible, the capture contains the visible 900-pixel view (along with anything else shown on the display), not the hidden 3,100 pixels. Scrolling first and taking several snips can collect the pieces, but Snipping Tool does not document automatic scrolling and stitching. Combining those pieces requires a separate image editor and manual alignment.
Capture the entire webpage in Microsoft Edge
Edge’s Screenshot feature is the practical built-in route when the page must include content below the fold.

- Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge and wait until the content you need is present.
- Open Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu, or open it from the Edge Settings menu. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + S.
- Choose the option to capture the Full page, rather than only the visible area.
- Review the capture in Edge’s overlay. Use the overlay’s controls to copy the result or save it.
The full-page command is designed to include content below the visible viewport, which is the capability Snipping Tool’s documented modes do not provide.

If Screenshot is missing
Microsoft notes that Screenshot feature availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. If you cannot find Screenshot in the right-click menu, Settings menu, or with Ctrl + Shift + S, check the Edge version installed on that device and the menus again. Do not assume that every Edge installation exposes the same controls.
Preparing a page for a cleaner capture
- Scroll through the page once if important sections load only after interaction, then return to the top before starting the full-page command.
- Close unrelated windows and browser panels so you do not accidentally capture them when using a Snipping Tool fallback.
- For a page with a fixed header, check the saved result for repeated or overlapping header content before sharing it.
- For very long or continuously loading pages, allow the page to finish loading first; otherwise the capture may reflect the state Edge could reach at capture time.
What to do when a full-page capture is not right
You only need one section
Use Snipping Tool’s Rectangle or Window mode. It is faster and avoids producing a very tall image when a focused excerpt is all that is required.

You need an audit trail of several pages
Manual Snipping Tool captures become difficult to name, repeat, and compare. Use Edge for occasional pages, or an API for a scripted list of URLs. An API also lets you choose an output format and apply the same viewport and wait rules every time.
The page contains private information
Before copying or saving any capture, inspect the image for account data, tokens, addresses, or other information that should not be shared. A screenshot preserves what is rendered, including sensitive text that may be easy to overlook.

Troubleshooting
Windows logo key + Shift + S does nothing
- Make sure the Windows logo key is being pressed with Shift and S together.
- Try launching Snipping Tool from the Start menu, then start a new snip from its capture controls.
- If the shortcut opens a different overlay or is intercepted by a managed-device policy, use the application’s own capture command instead.
The result shows only the visible page
That is expected for Snipping Tool. Full screen means the visible display, not a scrollable webpage. Use Edge Screenshot’s Full page option for content below the fold.

Edge has no Screenshot command
Check the browser version and the exact menus: right-click the page, open Edge Settings, and try Ctrl + Shift + S. Microsoft describes availability as variable by device type, market, and browser version, so a missing command may be a version or availability difference rather than an incorrect selection.
The Edge capture is incomplete
Return to the page, let images and other content finish loading, and repeat the Full page command. Pages that add content while you scroll, require a click, or depend on a session may not present identical content on every capture.
I need several sections but Edge is unavailable
Use Snipping Tool to take separate, overlapping sections so alignment is easier, then combine them in an image editor. This is a manual workaround, not a Snipping Tool full-page mode, and it requires checking the joins for missing or duplicated content.
