To capture an entire webpage on a Mac, use your browser’s full-page command rather than the normal macOS screenshot shortcuts. Firefox has the shortest built-in path: right-click the page, choose Take Screenshot, select Save full page, then download or copy the image. Safari uses Web Inspector, while Chrome uses DevTools’ Capture full size screenshot. Before any browser capture, scroll through pages that lazy-load images so content below the fold is present.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page capture stitches the webpage from the top through content below the current browser window into one image. That is different from macOS’s standard controls: Shift-Command-3 captures the entire display, Shift-Command-4 captures a selected region, and Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot app (on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later), but none of those commands automatically capture a long, scrollable webpage. Apple documents those screen-level controls in its Mac screenshot guidance.
A long image can be extremely tall. If your goal is a printable document rather than a single image, print-to-PDF may be more readable; the browser procedures below are specifically for an image file.
Prepare the page before capturing
Load lazy images and expanding sections
Some sites request images only as they approach the visible viewport. Scroll from the top to the bottom once, wait for images and embedded content to finish loading, and then return to the top before taking the capture. Otherwise, the lower part of the result may contain empty placeholders.

- Expand accordions or “read more” sections that must appear in the image.
- Use a stable zoom level and window width; changing either can reflow text and alter the final dimensions.
- For private pages, sign in first and confirm that the intended account or workspace is visible.
Browser menus and labels can change between versions. The names below match the documented routes, but a nearby label or menu location may appear in a later release.
Firefox: the quickest built-in method
Mozilla’s documented workflow puts the full-page action in the normal page context menu. It can save an image or copy it to the clipboard.
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty area of the page. On a Mac you can also Control-click. Choose Take Screenshot. Mozilla also documents Command-Shift-S as a shortcut to open the screenshot interface.
- In the screenshot interface, select Save full page in the upper-right corner. Mozilla describes this control as the way to “Capture the full page.”
- Select Download to save the image in Firefox’s default download folder, or choose Copy to place it on the clipboard.
Mozilla’s help page describes the downloaded output as an image file and discusses PNG naming. If you only need to paste the result into a document or chat, Copy avoids an extra file-management step.

Firefox Developer Tools alternative
For a command-oriented workflow, open Developer Tools and enable the full-page screenshot button under Settings > Available Toolbox Buttons. Firefox’s developer documentation also supports the Web Console command :screenshot --fullpage. This method is useful when you are already inspecting the page or want a repeatable console action; it captures portions outside the current window bounds.

Safari: use Web Inspector
Safari’s documented Mac route runs through Web Inspector rather than the ordinary page context menu.
- Open Safari Settings (called Preferences in older releases).
- Open Advanced and enable Show features for web developers or, on older versions, Show Develop menu in menu bar.
- With the webpage open, choose Develop > Show Web Inspector.
- In the Elements pane, locate the first
htmlline at the top of the document tree. - Right-click that
htmlline and choose Capture Screenshot. - Choose a save location and confirm the file.
This sequence is documented by iDownloadBlog, a secondary guide rather than an Apple Support procedure. Safari versions may move the developer controls or rename the menu items. If you do not see Develop, return to Advanced settings and enable the developer features first.

Chrome: capture the full document from DevTools
Chrome’s documented route uses the device emulation toolbar in DevTools. It does not require you to emulate a particular phone; the toolbar exposes the full-size capture command.
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Open Chrome’s menu, choose More Tools, then open Developer Tools.
- Click Toggle Device Toolbar in DevTools.
- Open the three-dot menu for the device toolbar.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot. Chrome downloads the image.
The Chrome procedure comes from a current secondary guide, not Chrome’s own help documentation in the material available for this article. Menu positions can change, so look for the device-toolbar three-dot menu if your layout differs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing among Safari, Chrome, and Firefox
| Browser | Setup | Full-page control | Output described in the documented route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox | None beyond opening the page | Page context menu: Take Screenshot > Save full page | Download the image or copy it to the clipboard |
| Safari | Enable Web Inspector/developer features | Elements pane: right-click html > Capture Screenshot |
Save to a chosen location |
| Chrome | Open DevTools and Device Toolbar | Device-toolbar menu: Capture full size screenshot | Downloaded image |
Firefox is the most direct of these documented options because the command is available from the page context menu. Safari and Chrome are practical when they are your primary browser or when you already use their developer tools. No comparable image-quality test establishes that one browser produces a better-looking file, so choose based on setup and workflow rather than an unverified quality claim.

When the result is incomplete or distorted
Images are missing below the fold
Scroll through the entire page first, pause for network activity to settle, and capture again. This is the usual remedy for lazy-loaded images.
The capture stops at the visible window
Verify that you selected the full-page command, not a visible-area or region option. In Firefox this means Save full page; in Chrome it means Capture full size screenshot; in Safari the command must be invoked from the document’s top-level html element.
A cookie banner or chat widget covers content
Close or accept the banner before capturing when possible. If the control cannot be dismissed, try the site in a private window or another browser, subject to the site’s terms and your account requirements.

The file is too tall to inspect
Open it in Preview or an image editor and zoom out, or use print-to-PDF when pagination and text readability matter more than a single image. A full-page image is convenient for sharing but is not automatically a good document layout.

If you need repeatable screenshots for documentation, monitoring, previews, or many URLs, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can capture full pages with lazy images loaded, select one element by CSS selector, set a viewport or device preset, use retina scale, apply dark mode, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and run custom CSS or JavaScript. Other controls include hiding selectors, clicking an element, blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types, supplying headers, cookies, user agents, or Authorization, setting timezone or geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the same one-call approach from any machine. The examples below are complete requests; replace YOUR_API_KEY and change the target URL as needed. Full API parameters are documented at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
- Browser capture: best for an occasional page when you are already signed in and can visually verify the result. It depends on the Mac session, browser state, extensions, and page timing.
- API capture: better for scheduled or bulk work. Use explicit waits for pages that render asynchronously, a selector wait when a known element signals readiness, and a cache TTL when repeated captures do not need a fresh render.
- Large pages: full-page images consume more memory and take longer to open than viewport shots. Capture a specific element or resize the output when the whole document is unnecessary.
- Billing: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Failed loads, bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, and cache hits are identified as non-billed outcomes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the normal Mac screenshot shortcut for a webpage?
No. The standard shortcuts capture the screen, a region, or the Screenshot app interface. Use the browser’s full-page feature for content beyond the viewport.
Does a full-page capture include content that has not loaded yet?
Not reliably. Visit the bottom of a lazy-loading page first and wait for its images or sections to appear.
Is Safari’s method the same as taking a full-page screenshot on iPhone?
No. This guide covers Safari on macOS using Web Inspector. iPhone and iPad have a separate full-page screenshot interface.
