Cancel Microsoft 365 from Microsoft’s Subscriptions page: sign in with the account that paid, select Manage, choose Cancel, and complete the prompts. If you see Turn on recurring billing rather than Manage, recurring billing is already disabled and the subscription will end on the date shown.
A universal $30 “Office for life” offer is not supported by the official Microsoft information available here. Microsoft lists Office Home 2024 as a one-time purchase at $149.99 in the United States (Microsoft listing, 2026); price, currency, region, edition and promotions can change.
How to cancel Microsoft 365
- Open Microsoft’s Subscriptions page and sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase the subscription.
- Find Microsoft 365 and select Manage.
- Select Cancel, then follow the on-screen confirmation steps.
- Check the displayed end date and save the confirmation email or page.
If the control says Turn on recurring billing, Microsoft indicates that recurring billing is already off. You should not be charged again, and the subscription remains active until the displayed expiration date.
What cancellation does to Word, Excel and your files
Desktop apps after expiration
When the subscription expires, the installed desktop apps can eventually switch to View Only mode. You can open and print existing documents, but you cannot edit or create new ones with the desktop apps.

Documents and OneDrive storage
Cancellation does not itself erase your documents. However, Microsoft 365’s extra OneDrive storage and other subscription services end, so review your storage usage and move or download files if your account will exceed the free allowance.
Free browser apps
A Microsoft account still provides free browser versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. These are separate from the full desktop applications and have fewer features.

Can you get a refund after canceling?
If Microsoft directly charged you recently, check Microsoft’s refund policy before assuming cancellation produces an automatic refund. Eligibility varies by country, subscription type and timing. Microsoft describes a possible one-time refund for the most recent recurring charge when cancellation is requested within 30 days of payment, subject to the policy’s conditions and limits. Purchases through Apple, Google, a retailer or another intermediary may follow that seller’s refund process instead.
Is the $30 lifetime Office key legitimate?
There is no official Microsoft evidence here validating a universal $30 lifetime license. A cheap key could be a different edition, a misused or resold volume license, counterfeit software, or a license that a seller later revokes. A product that activates today is not necessarily a transferable, perpetual retail license.

Warning signs
- The listing promises every Office application and future versions for one tiny, permanent payment.
- It does not clearly identify the edition, license type, number of devices, region or commercial-use rights.
- The seller supplies only a key, a third-party download, or instructions to disable security software.
- There is no verifiable invoice, activation method, refund policy or seller identity.
Safer purchasing practice
Microsoft recommends obtaining software from Microsoft, the Microsoft Store or a credible authorized partner. Verify the seller, exact edition, device limit, activation process, region and refund terms before paying. Do not treat a marketplace listing as genuine merely because its key activates.
The legal one-time-purchase alternative: Office Home 2024
Office Home 2024 is Microsoft’s closest match for someone who wants desktop Office without a recurring subscription. Microsoft describes it as a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac, including classic 2024 versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The Home edition is for non-commercial use.

Microsoft’s retrieved listing shows $149.99 for Office Home 2024 in 2026. That is a listed price, not a guaranteed worldwide or permanent price; taxes, currency, region, promotions and edition can change.
Office 2024 does not include new feature upgrades to later major releases. You keep using the release you bought, while Microsoft 365 receives continuously updated applications, security fixes, cloud storage and other subscription services.
