Disability-focused tools such as screen readers, switch input, voice input, and Braille access are the clearest examples of apps that may qualify. General-purpose automation and convenience features should not assume they will keep working through an accessibility service when protection is enabled.
Why an accessibility service may stop working
Accessibility services can interact directly with what appears on the screen. Google says that capability can be abused to read sensitive information, install malware, or obstruct an app’s removal. Android 17’s Advanced Protection restriction is intended to reduce that exposure while preserving verified assistive technology.
Android 17 is API level 37 and was released to supported Pixel devices on June 16, 2026, according to Android Developers. The restriction described here applies when Advanced Protection is enabled; it is not a general statement that Android 17 disables accessibility services for every user.
If an app’s feature depends on an accessibility service and the app is not permitted under the restriction, that feature may become unavailable while protection is on. The exact behavior depends on the app: the feature might stop, be limited, or offer another method. Google’s policy does not establish a single failure message or fallback for every app.

Which apps can continue using AccessibilityService?
Google’s rule is based on the app’s purpose and policy status, not just on whether it has a service that uses accessibility APIs. Google Play says an app is eligible to declare itself an accessibility tool only when it is designed to help people with disabilities access their device or overcome disability-related challenges. The app’s service metadata uses isAccessibilityTool="true", but setting that flag alone does not make a general-purpose app eligible or guarantee verification.
| App type or feature | How it fits the eligibility rule | What users should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Screen readers | Google lists screen readers as an example of accessibility tools. | A screen reader whose core purpose is disability assistance is among the clearest candidates to qualify, subject to verification and policy compliance. |
| Switch-based input | Google lists switch-based input systems as an example. | A disability-focused switch input tool is among the clearest candidates to qualify, subject to verification and policy compliance. |
| Voice-based input | Google lists voice-based input tools as an example. | A tool whose core purpose is disability-related voice input may qualify; a voice feature does not qualify merely because it uses accessibility APIs. |
| Braille access | Google lists Braille-based access systems as an example. | A disability-focused Braille access tool is among the clearest candidates to qualify, subject to verification and policy compliance. |
| Automation, launcher gestures, password filling, or testing | These uses are not automatically accessibility tools. Eligibility requires a genuine disability-assistance purpose, not simply convenience or use of the API. | Accessibility-dependent features may be restricted under Advanced Protection unless the app genuinely qualifies and is accepted under the applicable requirements. The result for a particular third-party app is not established by its category alone. |
Google’s policy also distinguishes disability assistance from general automation. Verified accessibility tools are exempt from the general prohibition on autonomous Accessibility API behavior when that autonomy serves the app’s core disability-assistance purpose. General automation must keep actions narrow and clearly understood: autonomous initiation, planning, and execution are prohibited, while deterministic, rule-based automation remains allowed under the policy.

What users of automation and convenience apps should do
Check whether the feature truly depends on accessibility access
If a launcher gesture, password-fill action, test workflow, or automation rule stops working after Advanced Protection is enabled, first identify whether that particular feature depends on AccessibilityService. A feature that uses another supported mechanism may behave differently; the restriction alone does not establish that every function in the app will stop.
Look for an alternative in the app
Check the app’s own settings or help for a non-accessibility method, a narrower action, or a fallback. Do not assume an app will be approved as an accessibility tool because it offers a useful feature or has an accessibility-service declaration. Google ties eligibility to the service’s disability-assistance purpose and policy compliance.

Choose protection with the trade-off in mind
Advanced Protection reduces exposure to misuse of a powerful screen-interaction interface, but may remove convenience features that rely on broad accessibility access. If a needed assistive tool is affected, check with its publisher about its verified accessibility-tool status and supported behavior on Android 17 with protection enabled. The available information does not establish an app-by-app allowlist for every third-party service.

Do not relabel general-purpose automation
Declare isAccessibilityTool="true" only when the service is genuinely designed to help people with disabilities access the device or overcome disability-related challenges. The flag is not a workaround for convenience automation, launcher gestures, password filling, or testing features, and it does not substitute for Google’s verification and policy requirements.

Provide a fallback for restricted features
Separate functions that require accessibility access from those that do not. Explain clearly when a feature is unavailable, offer a supported alternative where possible, and avoid implying that Advanced Protection is malfunctioning simply because it blocks a service that is not eligible.
Detect protection state
Android 17 exposes AdvancedProtectionManager, which apps can use to detect whether Advanced Protection is active and adopt a hardened posture or restrict high-risk functionality. Developers should use that signal to handle the mode deliberately rather than rely on accessibility access being available in every configuration.

How managed-device policy and developer verification differ
Google announced Android Enterprise support that will let organizations turn on Advanced Protection by policy for managed devices later in 2026. For employees using managed Android devices, an administrator may therefore enable the mode as part of organizational policy rather than leaving the choice solely to the device user.
Separately, Google’s developer-verification program concerns developer identity and installation provenance, not whether an app qualifies as an Accessibility Tool. Google says covered installations on certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand will require verified developer registration beginning in September 2026, with a planned global rollout across install sources in 2027. That program does not replace the disability-purpose and policy requirements for accessibility-tool eligibility.
