When you follow an account on Instagram, the app handles things differently depending on whether the profile is public or private. If the account is private, your follow can sit in a pending state as a follow request.

A follow request happens when you try to follow a private Instagram account and the owner hasn’t approved you yet. Your request appears on the account owner’s end as a pending request.

Before you cancel: confirm the account type and your status
Two quick checks prevent a lot of confusion:
- Is the account private? A private account shows a lock icon on the profile.
- Is your follow request still pending? If it’s pending, you should see it under your follow-request-related screens. If you’re already following, you’ll see “Following” instead.
If you followed a public account, there’s usually nothing to cancel—Instagram just makes you a follower immediately, and you’d “unfollow” instead.
Cancel a follow request on iPhone or iPad (Instagram app)
Use these steps in the Instagram app for iOS (iPhone or iPad). The wording can vary slightly by version, but the flow is consistent.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile tab (bottom-right).
- Tap ☰ (menu) in the top-right (or tap Settings depending on your layout).
- Go to Settings → Accounts Center.
- Look for Privacy or Following and followers related options, then find the screen that lists Follow requests.
- Find the account name you requested and tap Cancel request (or Withdraw request).
On many iOS builds, the simplest path is: go to your profile → menu → find Activity / Requests / Follow requests where Instagram lists outgoing pending requests.
If you don’t see a “Cancel request” button anywhere, jump to the troubleshooting section—there are several common causes.
Cancel a follow request on Android (Instagram app)
The Android app is very similar. Again, button labels may vary between app versions.
- Open Instagram on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile icon (bottom-right).
- Tap ☰ (menu) or your Settings gear.
- Go to Settings → Accounts Center.
- Find the Privacy or Following and followers area and locate the screen for Follow requests (outgoing).
- Select the target profile and tap Cancel request / Withdraw request.
If Instagram still doesn’t show any outgoing request list, the most likely scenario is that your request already moved to “Following,” you’re blocked, or the account is no longer private.

Cancel a follow request on the web (instagram.com)
Instagram’s web interface is less consistent than the mobile app, but cancellation is sometimes available through the pending requests list.
- Go to instagram.com and sign in.
- Click your profile icon.
- Look for a section labeled Requests, Follow requests, or similar.
- If you see the account under outgoing pending requests, click Cancel request / Withdraw.
If the web UI doesn’t show outgoing requests, use the Instagram mobile app. For private accounts, mobile tends to have the most complete controls.
What if the account accepted your request already?
Once a private account approves you, your request is gone—and you’re now a follower. In that situation, you can’t “cancel” a request because it’s no longer pending.
Do this instead:
- Open the profile of the account you requested.
- Tap Following (or a similar button that indicates you’re already following).
- Select Unfollow.
If you want them to stop seeing your posts, unfollowing is the standard option. If you want them unable to view your profile at all, blocking is stronger (more on that below).
What if you can’t find the cancel option?

- The account removed privacy: If the profile switched from private to public, the request may have resolved.

- Connection/session issue: A temporary sync glitch can hide your outgoing requests until you refresh or sign out/in.
If you’re not sure what state you’re in, check whether the target account shows Following or shows a pending/request state from your side.

Alternatives when cancellation isn’t available
If “Cancel request” isn’t available, you still have options depending on what you want to achieve.
Block the account
Blocking typically ends interaction immediately: the account can’t follow you, can’t see your content (with normal Instagram profile visibility rules), and you can’t be followed through that relationship.
- Open the account profile.
- Tap ⋯ (three dots) or Following menu.
- Select Block.
- Confirm by tapping Block again.
Be aware: blocking is stronger than canceling a request. If your goal is just to stop a pending follow, cancellation is cleaner—block is the “hard stop.”
Unfollow if you’re already following
If the request is no longer pending, unfollowing removes you from their follower list.
- Visit the profile.
- Tap Following.
- Tap Unfollow.
Note that unfollowing does not prevent them from viewing your profile if your account is public.
Log out and back in (works in some edge cases)
When the UI doesn’t load the requests list correctly, a session reset can help.

- Log back in and re-check the outgoing follow requests screen.
If you use a third-party password manager or VPN, disable VPN temporarily and try again, since some networks can cause partial account-sync behavior.

- Trying to cancel from the follower list. Outgoing pending requests aren’t the same as incoming follower requests.
- Assuming the button wording will be exact. You might see Cancel request, Withdraw request, or similar labels depending on build.
- Mixing up iOS and iPadOS menus. The screens are mostly the same, but labels can differ slightly.
- Forgetting the account may have changed privacy. If the account turned public, your request likely resolved or was removed.
- Blocking when you only needed to stop a pending request. Blocking is effective, but it’s more permanent socially and can complicate future interactions.

Why doesn’t Instagram show Cancel request for my pending request?
Most commonly, the request is no longer pending (you’re following), the account changed privacy, or the outgoing request list isn’t visible due to UI/version differences or a sync glitch. Update the app, sign out/in, and verify whether you’re actually following.
If I block the account, will the follow request cancel automatically?
