To stop future Microsoft 365 renewal charges, sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account used to buy the plan, select Manage, then choose Turn off recurring billing or Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation prompts. If you bought the plan through Apple, Google Play, or a retailer, cancel through that seller instead. Turning off renewal usually leaves access active until the expiry date shown in your account.
Check who bills you before you cancel
The cancellation route depends on where the subscription was purchased. For a direct Microsoft purchase, use the Microsoft account subscriptions page. For an App Store, Google Play, or retailer purchase, use that provider’s account or support channel; Microsoft says it cannot cancel, refund, or change billing for subscriptions purchased through third parties. See Microsoft’s cancellation instructions and guidance on managing a subscription.

- If the account page shows a Manage control and Microsoft billing details, follow the Microsoft steps below.
- If the page lacks cancellation controls, confirm that you are signed in with the account that made the purchase. Check the original receipt or the seller’s account to identify the billing provider.
Cancel a subscription billed by Microsoft
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft 365. Microsoft’s cancellation page may also direct you to account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365.
- Find the Microsoft 365 plan and select Manage.
- Select Turn off recurring billing or Cancel subscription. Depending on the account page, the control may appear as Upgrade or Cancel.
- Review the information about access and any refund eligibility, then complete the prompts and select the option that confirms cancellation if you want to stop renewal.
Microsoft says that turning off recurring billing means you will not be billed in the future. If the page instead offers Turn on recurring billing, renewal is already off and the subscription is scheduled to expire on the date shown; no further action is needed to prevent another renewal charge. Microsoft’s recurring-billing guidance explains these account states.

What happens to access after recurring billing is off?
Turning off recurring billing generally stops the next renewal rather than ending the subscription immediately. You can normally use the subscription until the expiry date displayed in your account. Microsoft 365 Family benefits shared with other people remain available to them until that date as well.

Check storage and mail before the expiry date
When a Microsoft 365 subscription expires, applicable free allowances are 5 GB for cloud storage, including OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments, and 15 GB for Outlook.com storage, according to Microsoft’s cancellation and storage guidance. If your usage—or that of people who shared a Family or Premium plan—exceeds the relevant free allowance, OneDrive uploads, edits, and syncing can be restricted, and Outlook.com sending and receiving can be affected. Microsoft says OneDrive content may be deleted after six months if the account remains over quota. Check your own and any shared users’ storage and make a plan for files or email before the subscription expires.
Can you get a refund?
Cancellation does not guarantee a refund. For Microsoft-billed subscriptions, the cancellation process shows whether a refund is available for your account. Microsoft’s refund policy says that, in most cases, a refund may be available within 30 days of the initial purchase or before the first recurring billing date, whichever comes sooner. It also describes a possible refund of the most recent recurring charge when cancellation is within 30 days after payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. Eligibility depends on the product and country; prepaid retail codes are excluded from that policy, and some regions have prorated-refund rules. For a purchase billed by Apple, Google Play, or a retailer, contact that seller about refunds.

If you want Office apps without a subscription
If your goal is to stop recurring payments but continue using Office apps, Microsoft describes an alternative: turn off recurring billing, wait for the subscription to expire, then purchase a one-time Office edition. That is optional and is not required to stop renewal.
Business subscriptions use separate guidance
This guide covers consumer Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Microsoft directs business customers to separate business cancellation guidance; the steps and controls can depend on the organization’s admin role and tenant. Consult your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator or the relevant business support instructions rather than assuming the consumer account steps apply.
