If a Character.AI character will not calm down, first check whether the problem happens in one reply, one conversation, or multiple new chats. Regenerate a one-off bad reply; edit or remove a repeated message to break a loop in the current chat; revise the character definition when the same behavior returns in fresh chats. None of these steps guarantees a particular response: Character.AI says models can miss, and platform filters and infrastructure can affect outputs.
Is the behavior isolated or persistent?
The scope of the problem tells you where to intervene. Character.AI’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes an isolated bad response from a recurring behavior caused by the character definition or by model and infrastructure limitations.

Find the exchange where the character first starts behaving differently from what you intended. Then make the definition more specific about how the character responds in that situation. Important behavior should appear near the beginning, and concrete dialogue examples can show how the character acts across different emotional contexts.

Describe range, not just one mood
A direction such as “always calm” can leave the character with only one register and may make its responses feel flat. Define a range instead: for example, the character might stay composed under pressure but become dryly sarcastic when annoyed. The point is to describe the distinction between situations, rather than repeat a single trait.
Use examples that demonstrate the behavior
Show what the character says and does when challenged, misunderstood, or given a reason to relax. Specific examples give more guidance than vague labels such as “nice” or “calm.” Character.AI describes the definition as “a living document,” so refine it as you observe how the character responds.

If the problem is confined to one conversation, changing the definition may be unnecessary. Regenerate a single unsuitable reply. If an angry phrase keeps getting repeated in the active chat, edit or remove the message that established the pattern. That can change the context for the rest of that conversation, but it does not update the definition or affect other users’ chats.

What a definition cannot fix
A stronger definition is guidance, not a guarantee. Character.AI says the model can miss instructions, and temporary infrastructure issues can affect behavior. Its troubleshooting article also notes that if a strong definition still produces persistent problems across new chats, the cause may not be the creator’s fault.
Content filtering is separate from the character definition. The platform says filtering can occur regardless of how a character is written; changing the character’s wording is not a way to tune away a filter. If you believe a flag was an error, Character.AI directs users to contact support. See its troubleshooting and limitations guidance.
