For a consistent period, subtract the costs you actually incurred from driver payouts and other income you actually earned, then divide the result by all the time you spent working, including waiting, pickup travel and repositioning.
Start with the money you actually earn
Passenger fares and app totals can be misleading: the passenger’s payment is not necessarily what reaches the driver. Your starting point should be the driver earnings or payout shown in your own statement, with its components identified.

Net hourly return = operating profit ÷ total work hours
This is a decision-making framework, not an official formula used by Grab or GoTo and not a claim about what drivers generally earn. Keep the accounting consistent: if a cost has already been withheld from the payout figure you use, do not subtract it again.
Separate the statement’s components
Record base trip earnings, tips, bonuses, reimbursements and platform fees separately. Check whether the amount shown is a gross fare, a driver amount after a fee or revenue share, or a final payout. Count a bonus only after you have met its eligibility conditions and the amount is actually earned.

It describes the service fee as the difference between driver earnings and passenger fare. Grab says service statements are available weekly, monthly and annually. These are Singapore-specific descriptions; use the labels and amounts in your own local app and statement.
For GoCar in Indonesia, Gojek’s help material distinguishes the customer-paid platform fee, which goes to Gojek, from the trip fare, which is driver-partner income subject to revenue sharing under applicable rules. Do not treat the passenger’s full payment as your income or assume a fee rate that is not shown in your own records.

Count every cost of doing the work
Use actual costs for the period wherever possible. The right list depends on your vehicle, location and whether you rent or own it. Include costs that are genuinely attributable to earning platform income, and choose a consistent method for allocating shared costs.
- Fuel or charging, including work-related consumption rather than an unexamined estimate based on passenger-trip distance alone.
- Vehicle rental payments, or a reasonable allocation of ownership costs such as financing or depreciation.
- Maintenance, repairs, tires, cleaning and vehicle insurance.
- Road tax, parking, phone and data, and other work-related expenses.
- Tolls and other trip costs that are not reimbursed.
- Platform charges or service fees, if they have not already been deducted from the payout figure you are using.
Singapore’s IRAS lists expenses such as rental, fuel or charging, repairs and maintenance, parking, operator service fees, phone subscriptions, road tax and commercial vehicle insurance among potentially allowable business expenses. Tax deductibility is a separate question from whether a cost reduced your cash profit; follow local tax rules for filing.
Handle reimbursements without double-counting
Record a reimbursement separately from income and match it to the expense it covers. For example, if a toll is included in your costs and then reimbursed, record both entries so the reimbursement offsets that cost. If your chosen payout number already includes the reimbursement, do not add it again.
Match costs to the same period
For recurring costs, use a consistent period or allocation. If you work only part of a month, do not charge an entire month of a shared vehicle cost to a short shift unless that is genuinely the cost of making the vehicle available for that work. For a rental vehicle, use the rental charge that applies to the period being assessed. For an owned vehicle, keep operating costs such as fuel separate from the ownership-cost allocation so the same expense is not counted twice.
Include all work time, not only time with a passenger
Divide operating profit by the full time you devoted to earning it. Include time online waiting for an assignment, travelling to a pickup, completing the trip, repositioning between jobs and handling work-related tasks. Leaving out unpaid time makes the hourly result look better than the return on your actual working day.

Track total work hours consistently for both platforms. If you compare only paid trip time for one and online time for the other, the result is not a fair comparison.

If vehicle costs are important in your market, calculate:
Operating profit per work kilometre (or mile) = operating profit ÷ total work distance
Use the same definition of work distance for each platform and include empty travel, such as driving to pickups and repositioning, where you can. A high hourly return paired with a large amount of unpaid distance may have a different cost profile from a similar hourly return with less driving.
Build a comparison from your own records
Collect several representative weeks of records for each platform, or a full incentive cycle if bonuses are part of your decision. Keep the periods, city, vehicle, working hours and cost method as alike as practical. A simple spreadsheet is enough; a mileage and expense logbook is optional.

- Gather statements and vehicle records. For each platform, collect payout statements, bonus details, hours worked, odometer readings or work distance, fuel or charging records, rental payments and other relevant receipts.
- Classify platform money. Separate driver trip earnings, tips, earned incentives, reimbursements and any platform deductions. Check the statement definitions so you know whether you are using gross earnings or a payout after fees.
- Add actual work costs. Include vehicle, operating and other job-related costs for the same period. Allocate shared costs consistently and do not subtract a fee or expense twice.
- Record all work hours and distance. Count waiting, pickup, trip and repositioning time; record empty and paid distance where possible.
- Calculate operating profit and return. Apply the formulas above for each platform and period. Compare net hourly return and, where useful, operating profit per work kilometre or mile.
- Assess how repeatable the result is. Compare multiple representative periods, not just a particularly busy shift or a week when an unusual offer paid out.
A comparison is most informative when both platforms are assessed in the same city, with the same vehicle, over similar days and hours. If those conditions differ, describe the difference rather than attributing the whole result to the platform.
Check pickups, fees and incentives in your market
Pickup pay can change the economics
Unpaid pickup distance consumes both time and vehicle resources. Grab Malaysia has described an improved driver-partner earnings structure in which earnings equal pickup fare plus trip fare minus the Grab Service Fee, with earnings beginning as the driver heads to the pickup. Grab described that structure as a proof of concept or trial, initially in specified Malaysian cities and for eligible services—not as a current rule for every Grab service or market. Check your own app and statements to see how pickups are treated where you drive.
Do not budget conditional bonuses as guaranteed income
Include incentive money only when you qualified under the applicable terms. Gojek’s official GoCar new-driver incentive page, dated 4 June 2026, describes a time-limited offer with trip, active-day, acceptance and completion thresholds. That offer illustrates why incentives should be separated from ordinary trip earnings; it does not establish an ongoing or typical bonus. Check the current Driver app offer and its eligibility period before counting it in a forward-looking estimate.
When reviewing a bonus, write down the conditions, the dates, and the amount actually credited. A target that requires more hours or trips can change your effective hourly return, even when the bonus itself is paid in full.

Operating profit is a practical cash-based comparison using your own income and costs. Taxable income and mandatory contributions are calculated under local rules and may use different methods. Work out the local obligations separately rather than treating a statutory formula as proof that your actual vehicle expenses or profit have a particular value.

Singapore CPF example
For Singapore platform workers, the CPF Board states the calculation as: “Net earnings = Gross earnings minus Fixed Expense Deduction Amount”. Its page, last updated 27 May 2025, lists a 60% Fixed Expense Deduction Amount for cars, vans, lorries and trucks. In the Board’s example, a private-hire car driver with $4,000 in gross earnings has $1,600 in net earnings after the 60% deduction. This is a Singapore CPF calculation for contributions; it does not establish that the driver’s actual costs were $2,400 or that the work was profitable.
Singapore income-tax expenses
IRAS describes two approaches for platform workers: claiming allowable business expenses against income or using a prescribed percentage of gross income as a simplified deemed expense amount. IRAS says proper records must be kept even when the simplified method is used. These tax methods are not interchangeable with your actual cash-cost log, and Singapore rules should not be applied to drivers in other countries.
Decide what “worth it” means for you
There is no single Grab-versus-GoTo verdict without a location, vehicle arrangement, work pattern, costs and applicable tax or contribution rules. The reviewed official platform information does not provide a directly comparable, independently measured current net hourly figure after each driver’s own costs. Your records can answer the question for your circumstances.
- Compare net hourly return across representative periods, including waiting and pickup time.
- Check how much the result depends on incentives, and whether you can meet their conditions without working more hours than you intend.
- Look at pickup and empty distance alongside earnings, especially where fuel, charging or vehicle wear is a major cost.
- Use your actual rental or ownership arrangement; platform earnings alone cannot show whether that vehicle cost is sustainable.
- Set aside local taxes and mandatory contributions separately, then judge whether the remaining return meets your personal target.
If a platform’s apparent advantage disappears when you include empty travel, waiting time or recurring vehicle costs, that is useful information—not a calculation error. Revisit the comparison when your costs, schedule, platform terms or local rules change.
