To estimate how long a large library of local videos will take to upload to YouTube, add the files’ sizes and divide by your sustained upload speed. With decimal gigabytes and megabits per second, the baseline is hours ≈ total GB × 8,000 ÷ upload Mbps ÷ 3,600. That estimates file transfer only; YouTube processing takes additional time. If you mean the watch duration of videos already in a playlist, that is a separate calculation.
Estimate transfer time from file size and upload speed
YouTube says upload time varies with file size; internet bandwidth and upload traffic also affect it, and higher-quality videos take longer to upload. The formula gives a baseline, not a guaranteed finish time.

- Total the source files. Add the sizes of the video files you plan to upload. Use decimal gigabytes (GB) if applying the formula below.
- Measure your upload rate. Use the sustained rate observed during a representative upload, not the maximum advertised by your internet plan. Network conditions can vary.
- Calculate seconds. Divide total GB multiplied by 8,000 by the sustained upload speed in megabits per second (Mbps):
seconds ≈ total GB × 8,000 ÷ sustained upload Mbps. - Convert to hours. Divide the result in seconds by 3,600.
For example, if your files total 100 decimal GB and a representative upload sustains 20 Mbps, the baseline is 40,000 seconds, or about 11.1 hours. This is arithmetic, not a prediction for your particular connection: it excludes network variation, retries, and YouTube processing. For binary units such as GiB, keep the size and conversion units consistent rather than treating them as decimal GB.

Transfer time is not YouTube processing time
The estimate above covers sending the file to YouTube. After transfer, YouTube processes the video; processing can take additional time and depends on video quality, length, format, and traffic. A file may finish uploading before higher-resolution playback is ready. Allow for both stages when planning a publishing deadline, but there is no universal overhead percentage that can reliably be added to the transfer estimate.
Does uploading in batches change the total time?
YouTube Studio lets you select up to 15 videos at a time. That is a selection limit, not evidence that 15 files upload concurrently or that a batch makes the total upload time 15 times shorter. The library’s total bytes and the sustained upload rate remain the useful basis for a baseline estimate.

For large files or an unstable connection, YouTube’s Data API guide documents resumable uploads. Resuming can recover an interrupted transfer from the successfully uploaded point; it does not make the underlying connection faster.

Playlist runtime is the sum of the durations of its videos, not the time needed to upload local files. With the YouTube Data API, retrieve every playlist item, continue through pages until there is no next-page token, obtain duration metadata for the videos, convert each duration to seconds, then add the seconds together. The playlist item list method returns up to 50 items per response, so a large playlist may require multiple pages. Video duration is represented in ISO 8601 format, such as PT#M#S.
