How to Calculate the Real Yield and Fees on a Bitcoin Mining Contract

A practical, formula-based guide to turning a Bitcoin mining contract’s headline output into net BTC after pool, hashrate, electricity, payout and withdrawal costs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The real result of a Bitcoin mining contract is not its advertised “yield.” It is the BTC actually credited under the contract’s payout rules, minus every fee you must pay, with any BTC-to-fiat conversion shown as a separate scenario. To calculate it, reconstruct the offer, model the share of network rewards your contracted hashrate should earn, verify how the pool handles subsidy and transaction fees, subtract each charge once, and test the result against delivery, difficulty, Bitcoin-price and counterparty risks.

What “real yield” means in a Bitcoin mining contract

A mining contract gives you a claim to a stated amount of computing power for a stated period. The provider directs that power to a mining pool or mining operation and credits you according to the contract’s payout formula. Your result is therefore an estimate of BTC credited, not ownership of a fixed quantity of Bitcoin.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Bitcoin’s reward for a mined block has two components: the block subsidy and the transaction fees paid by transactions included in that block. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes the coinbase transaction as collecting “the block reward (comprised of a block subsidy and any transaction fees paid by transactions included in this block).” A pool distributes the work-based reward among participants according to its payout method, then may deduct a pool or management fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The amount you finally keep can also be affected by a contract’s hashrate charge, electricity charge, account or withdrawal fees, minimum-payout rule, downtime, delivered-hashrate shortfall and the BTC price used for any fiat comparison. A provider’s historical output or calculator is an input to an estimate, not a promise. Binance’s cloud-mining documentation explicitly says historical output is not an accurate prediction of future output.

Why the advertised percentage can be misleading

“Yield” figures are not comparable unless they describe the same thing. One provider may show gross BTC before pool fees; another may show BTC after pool deductions but before electricity; a third may annualize a short promotional period. A percentage can also assume full uptime while the contract defines a remedy only after a service-level test at the end of the term.

Before comparing offers, label every number as one of the following:

  • Gross network reward: the estimated share of block subsidy and transaction-fee revenue attributable to the contracted work.
  • Credited BTC: the amount the provider says will appear in your account under its payout rules.
  • Net BTC: credited BTC minus BTC-denominated charges that were not already withheld.
  • Net fiat scenario: net BTC multiplied by a stated BTC price, less fiat costs.
  • Break-even price: total fiat costs divided by positive net BTC. This is a scenario calculation, not a forecast.

Never call an estimate a guaranteed return. Network difficulty, effective hashrate, block-fee conditions, service uptime and Bitcoin’s market price can all change during the term.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: transcribe the contract before doing any math

Copy the offer and the binding terms into a worksheet. Do not rely on a sales page’s headline number when the legal terms use a different definition.

Hashrate and operating period

  • Record the purchased hashrate and unit, such as TH/s.
  • Record the contract length in actual operating days, not merely calendar dates.
  • Check when the term starts: at purchase, at payment confirmation or when the computing power goes online.
  • Write down the expected start time and the provider’s definition of a day.
  • Note whether the provider can delay activation or substitute machines.

Binance, for example, defines duration from the time computing power goes online. That is a provider-specific rule, not a universal cloud-mining convention.

Every price and payment trigger

  • Upfront hashrate fee, including its unit and whether it is refundable.
  • Electricity charge, including the unit, rate, billing frequency and payment currency.
  • Pool or management fee and whether it is already netted from the displayed output.
  • Account, maintenance, payout, withdrawal, conversion and blockchain-transaction fees.
  • Minimum payout threshold and what happens to balances below it at expiry.
  • Any variable-rate clause, reserve, tax or fee that can be added later.

Do not assume that “electricity included” means all operating costs are included. Confirm what the phrase means in the contract, and whether the provider can change a rate.

Delivery, payout and exit terms

  • The uptime or delivered-hashrate formula.
  • The measurement period and the remedy for short delivery.
  • The pool payout method, including treatment of transaction fees.
  • Payment schedule, account-credit timing and coinbase or maturity delays where applicable.
  • Cancellation, refund, early-termination and force-majeure provisions.
  • Counterparty identity, governing terms and what happens if the service closes.

Step 2: understand the reward being shared

Mining is a race to find a valid block. In solo mining, one operator keeps the reward when it finds a block, but the results are irregular. In pooled mining, miners submit work and receive payments broadly in proportion to the valid hashing work they contribute. The pool’s accounting method determines how subsidy and transaction-fee revenue are converted into your credit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FPPS and similar payout methods

Under a full-pay-per-share (FPPS) arrangement, a pool generally estimates the expected network reward per unit of hashing work and pays according to accepted shares. Verify whether the specific contract includes both the block subsidy and an allowance for transaction fees, and whether the quoted figure is before or after the pool fee.

An SEC-filed disclosure by BitMine Immersion Technologies illustrates one company’s FPPS accounting as a share of expected network rewards with fee treatment, less a mining-pool fee. That filing is a historical, company-specific example, not a universal FPPS formula. The same filing reports a 0.3% pool management fee for the company’s described pool use during the year ended August 31, 2024; do not apply that rate to another contract without evidence.

Transaction fees are variable

Transaction-fee revenue depends on the size and demand for block space. A busy fee market can raise the fee component of a block reward; quiet conditions can reduce it. If a provider’s calculator uses a fixed fee assumption, record the date and assumption. If the contract does not disclose how fee revenue is treated, mark that uncertainty instead of treating a headline estimate as complete.

Step 3: estimate BTC before contract-specific deductions

A simplified share model is:

expected BTC before contract-specific deductions ≈ (your effective hashrate ÷ network hashrate) × expected network BTC rewards during the operating period

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Effective hashrate” is the hashrate actually delivered and accepted by the pool, not automatically the amount printed on the order. The network-reward estimate must state its assumptions for difficulty or network hashrate, block subsidy, transaction fees and operating time.

Use the provider’s calculator as an input, then save a dated copy of the assumptions. Ask these questions:

  • Does the calculator use the purchased hashrate or an expected delivered hashrate?
  • Is the figure gross, or has the pool fee already been withheld?
  • Are both subsidy and transaction-fee components included?
  • What network difficulty or hashrate assumption is used?
  • Does the estimate assume 100% uptime?
  • Is the result per day, per billing period or for the entire term?

Because no current network difficulty, hashprice, BTC/USD price or realized average transaction fee is established here, those values must come from the contract’s dated assumptions or a separately documented scenario. Do not present an undated calculator output as a current market fact.

Step 4: calculate each fee without double-counting

Put each charge on its own line and identify whether it is already included in the quoted BTC amount.

Hashrate charge

When the contract uses a per-unit daily rate:

hashrate fees = hashrate rate per unit per day × purchased hashrate × billable days

Binance describes a hashrate fee on a per-TH/s-per-day basis. Confirm the actual rate, the billable-day definition and whether the charge is paid upfront or deducted over time.

Electricity charge

Where electricity is also priced per unit per day:

electricity fees = electricity rate per unit per day × contract hashrate × billable days

Use that equation only when the contract actually uses that pricing model. Some providers bundle electricity into a headline price, deduct it from mining proceeds or apply another formula. If electricity is already included, do not add it again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pool, payout and account charges

Add a pool fee only when it is not already netted from the quoted payout. Then add account, payout, currency-conversion, withdrawal or transaction fees imposed by the particular contract or account. A minimum payout can create an economic cost if a small residual balance cannot be withdrawn.

Two-fee example

“Why are there two fees?” usually refers to separate hashrate and electricity charges. A provider may charge for reserving computing capacity and separately recover the power cost of operating that capacity. KuCoin’s educational contract guide describes these categories and notes that payment arrangements differ by provider. The labels do not tell you whether either charge is included in the displayed yield; the contract does.

Step 5: derive net BTC, fiat scenarios and break-even

Use these formulas:

net BTC = credited BTC − BTC-denominated fees not already deducted

total fiat costs = upfront fees + fiat electricity and service charges + applicable account, payout and withdrawal charges

break-even BTC price = total fiat costs ÷ net BTC

The break-even equation is meaningful only when net BTC is positive and all costs are included. State the BTC price, currency, exchange-rate source and date used for a fiat scenario. BTC quantity and BTC value are separate outcomes: the token amount may remain unchanged while its fiat value moves sharply.

Illustrative worksheet

The following is an arithmetic illustration, not a market forecast. Suppose a contract’s dated calculator shows 0.010 BTC credited for its full term, and the terms state that a 0.0002 BTC withdrawal charge is not included. The net BTC is:

0.0100 BTC − 0.0002 BTC = 0.0098 BTC

If the contract’s fiat charges total $450 and you choose a clearly stated scenario price of $60,000 per BTC, the scenario value is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

0.0098 × $60,000 = $588

The scenario surplus is $138, while the break-even price is:

$450 ÷ 0.0098 = approximately $45,918 per BTC

Changing the assumed BTC price changes the fiat result but not the BTC credit. Changing network conditions or delivered hashrate changes the estimated BTC itself.

Step 6: test delivery and downtime

A contract can be unprofitable even when its advertised daily output was calculated correctly if the provider delivers less hashrate or operates for fewer hours.

Binance defines total hashrate online rate as total hashrate delivered divided by purchased hashrate, multiplied by mining duration. Its described products target a 95% minimum by the end of the subscription period under the stated terms. That is a provider-specific service level, not an industry-wide standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the contract’s exact formula:

delivered-hashrate rate = (total delivered hashrate ÷ purchased hashrate) × (actual operating duration ÷ contracted duration)

Check whether the remedy is extra mining time, a credit, a refund, a replacement allocation or nothing unless a formal threshold is missed. A 95% service level does not mean every day will deliver 95%; it may be measured cumulatively at the period end.

How to compare two or more contracts

Normalize the offers before comparing them. Use the same network-reward, difficulty, transaction-fee, uptime and BTC-price assumptions for both.

Comparison axis What to record Why it changes the result
Effective hashrate Purchased amount, unit and expected delivery A lower delivered rate produces fewer accepted shares.
Operating time Start trigger, billable days and suspension rules The same nominal term can contain different active mining time.
Output basis Gross or net BTC; subsidy and transaction-fee treatment Headline outputs may not be comparable.
Fees Hashrate, electricity, pool, payout, withdrawal and conversion charges All-in cost determines net BTC and break-even price.
Payout method FPPS or another method, threshold and schedule Accounting and timing affect credited amounts.
Service remedy Measurement formula, threshold and compensation Downtime risk is not captured by a gross calculator.
Exit and counterparty terms Refund, cancellation and closure provisions A projected return is not useful if access to the service is uncertain.

Do not compare “annual yield” percentages when one offer quotes gross output, another quotes net output, or their electricity and uptime assumptions differ. Recalculate both into net BTC, total costs and a common fiat scenario.

Common calculation errors and how to correct them

Subtracting a pool fee twice

If the provider says the displayed BTC is already net of pool fees, do not subtract the fee again. If the provider gives gross BTC, subtract it once and label the result.

Adding electricity to an all-in price

Read the pricing definition. A headline rate may include electricity, while another offer lists it separately. Map the invoice or deduction to one worksheet line only.

Treating historical output as a guarantee

Historical output records what happened under past conditions. It does not lock future block rewards, difficulty, transaction fees or uptime. Keep the date and assumptions beside every estimate.

Ignoring the start trigger

If duration starts when machines go online, a purchase date is not necessarily day one. If activation is delayed, determine whether the provider extends the term or simply delivers fewer operating days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using purchased rather than delivered hashrate

Use measured or contract-defined delivered hashrate when available. If only a service-level commitment exists, model a full-delivery case and a short-delivery case rather than assuming perfect uptime.

Calling the fiat result profit

A fiat conversion is a price scenario. Label it with the BTC price and date, and keep it separate from the BTC accounting result.

Questions to ask the provider before paying

  1. Is the quoted BTC gross or net of pool and management fees?
  2. Does the payout include transaction-fee revenue as well as the block subsidy?
  3. What exact hashrate unit, operating-day definition and activation trigger apply?
  4. Are hashrate and electricity fees fixed for the term, and can either rate change?
  5. What is the delivered-hashrate formula and the remedy for missing the threshold?
  6. What payout threshold, withdrawal charge and network-fee policy apply?
  7. What happens to an unpaid balance at expiry?
  8. Can the contract be cancelled, refunded or transferred?
  9. Which assumptions generated the output estimate, and on what date?
  10. Which entity is your counterparty, and what happens if the service stops?

Contracted hashrate versus buying a miner

A physical ASIC miner is the direct alternative to buying contracted hashrate. Owning hardware can give you control over pool choice, operating schedule and resale, but it also transfers electricity, cooling, networking, maintenance, noise, space and uptime responsibilities to you. A contract can avoid those operational tasks, while adding provider, delivery and term-risk. The correct comparison is not a machine’s sticker price against a contract’s headline yield; it is the expected net BTC after hardware, power, hosting, maintenance, downtime and resale assumptions on one side, versus all-in contract fees and counterparty risk on the other.

What the calculation can—and cannot—prove

A careful worksheet can show the BTC amount implied by stated assumptions, the fees required to obtain it, the BTC price needed to break even and how sensitive the result is to delivery or network conditions. It cannot guarantee that a pool will earn a particular number of blocks, that transaction fees will remain at an assumed level, that a provider will deliver continuously or that BTC will trade at the price used in your scenario.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defensible verdict is therefore conditional: accept a contract only when its terms let you calculate net BTC, all-in costs, delivery remedies and break-even price without hidden inputs. If a provider cannot identify whether output is gross or net, how electricity is charged, when the term starts or what happens during short delivery, the real yield is not established.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FPPS guarantee profit?

No. FPPS describes a pool payment method; it does not guarantee that the BTC credited will exceed contract fees or that BTC will retain a particular fiat value. Profit still depends on delivered hashrate, network conditions, fees and the BTC price scenario.

Should I use the contract calculator’s BTC price?

Use the calculator’s network assumptions only after recording them. Show BTC quantity separately, then choose and date your own fiat-price scenario so the conversion is transparent.

What if the contract does not disclose a fee or payout rule?

Treat the missing item as an unresolved cost or risk. Ask for the binding term in writing; do not fill the gap with an industry-average assumption.
