Calculate break-even by dividing the stream’s monthly operating cost by your estimated creator revenue per view. If your YouTube Analytics RPM is R dollars per 1,000 views and your monthly costs are C dollars, the estimated target is C × 1,000 ÷ R monthly views. It is a planning estimate, not a promise: RPM varies, and YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve.
Use creator RPM to calculate the monthly view target
RPM is the useful starting point for a view-based break-even estimate because YouTube defines it as creator revenue after revenue share per 1,000 views. CPM, by contrast, is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share; it is not the amount a creator takes home for each 1,000 views. YouTube explains the distinction between RPM and CPM.

Break-even monthly views = monthly operating costs ÷ (creator RPM ÷ 1,000)

For example, if your monthly costs are $300 and your channel’s relevant RPM is $3, the estimate is 300 ÷ (3 ÷ 1,000) = 100,000 monthly views. Replace those illustrative inputs with your own costs and Analytics data. The arithmetic does not establish how many people will watch or whether every view will generate revenue.
Calculate an hourly target for a 24/7 schedule
Divide monthly costs by the actual number of hours in the month, then divide that hourly cost by your estimated creator revenue per hour. A continuously running stream is scheduled for 24 hours a day, but months have different lengths. Use the specific period you are modelling rather than assuming every month has the same number of operating hours.
Build a complete monthly cost figure
Include expenses attributable to keeping the stream live, not only the most visible software or hosting bill. Use recurring amounts where possible and convert one-time or irregular expenses into a reasonable monthly allocation.

- Internet service and any additional connection costs used for the stream.
- Electricity, if equipment runs at home or in a studio.
- Software, cloud hosting, or other streaming-service charges.
- Paid labor, if someone prepares, monitors, or maintains the stream.
- A monthly allowance for equipment purchase, maintenance, and replacement.
Separate fixed costs from costs that change with operating time, storage, or audience. If a cost applies to several projects, allocate only the portion attributable to this stream and note the method. The break-even result is only as useful as this cost boundary.
Choose an RPM that fits the stream and period
Use your channel’s own YouTube Analytics, preferably for a comparable live-stream period, rather than a generic rate. YouTube RPM combines revenue sources and is calculated across views, including views that did not monetize; a blended channel RPM therefore may not predict the result for one particular 24/7 stream. YouTube does not provide a universal typical RPM that can safely be applied across topics, audience locations, and channels.
For an auditable estimate, record the Analytics date range, the live-stream or replay data you used, the RPM, and any major difference between that content and the stream you are forecasting. Recalculate when the stream’s audience mix, format, or monetization changes.

Do not substitute CPM for RPM
CPM describes advertiser spend per 1,000 ad impressions before revenue share. It does not tell you the creator’s revenue per 1,000 video views. Views and ad impressions are not interchangeable, so using CPM directly in the break-even formula can materially overstate or misstate the required audience.

YouTube identifies live-stream ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as live revenue features; Premium can also contribute creator revenue when eligible viewers watch content. RPM already includes several revenue sources, including ads, Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. If you use RPM, do not add those same earnings again as separate revenue.
If you instead build a revenue estimate from separate Analytics totals, include only sources supported by your own history and keep the period consistent with the costs and view count. Do not treat a feature’s availability as evidence that it will earn money: access can depend on eligibility, location, thresholds, and other requirements.

Model low, base, and high outcomes
Ad delivery and RPM are uncertain. YouTube states that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, so a single-point estimate can create false confidence. Use a range based on your own observed revenue history and plausible RPM assumptions; do not present the high case as expected income.

These are calculation cases, not market benchmarks. Keep the same cost period in each row, and document whether any separate revenue is included. YouTube says its automatic live mid-roll controls offer low, medium, and high ad-break frequency choices, but ad delivery remains unguaranteed. In a YouTube Help comparison based on January 2024 data across 207 countries, creators who chose automatic mid-roll ads had over 20% higher average instream ad revenue per hour than channels without automatic mid-rolls. That is YouTube’s observed comparison, not proof of causation or a forecast for an individual channel. You can inspect live-stream and replay ad revenue in YouTube Analytics. Check monetization eligibility before treating revenue as available
Watch Page ad and Premium revenue from live streams requires applicable eligibility and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. Other features may have their own eligibility requirements, and access can vary by location and channel status. Confirm your channel’s current feature access and terms in YouTube Studio and on YouTube’s monetization overview. Rules, module terms, and controls can change.

Revenue calculations also assume your content is eligible to be monetized. A 24/7 schedule does not itself create monetization eligibility, guarantee continuous viewers, or ensure a particular ad fill rate or RPM. Review YouTube’s current policies and the status shown for your own videos and channel before relying on forecast revenue.
Example: turn your inputs into an auditable target
- Add the costs attributable to the stream for one calendar month, including a monthly equipment allowance if applicable.
- Choose a comparable creator RPM from YouTube Analytics and write down its date range and context.
- Calculate monthly views as monthly costs × 1,000 ÷ RPM.
- Repeat the calculation with conservative and stronger RPM assumptions based on your own history.
- Compare each target with realistic viewing data for the stream. Treat the result as a target to test, not a revenue commitment.
For instance, with $300 in monthly costs and a $3 RPM, the calculated target is 100,000 views in the month. At a lower assumed RPM, the required view count rises; at a higher assumed RPM, it falls. The example demonstrates the formula only and does not indicate a typical RPM or expected performance.
