How to Calculate the Break-Even Point Between a Gaming PC and Cloud Gaming

A practical break-even formula for comparing a gaming PC with cloud gaming, including electricity, resale value, service caps, game access and network fit.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find out whether buying a gaming PC or paying for cloud gaming costs less, compare both options over the same period. Add the PC’s purchase, electricity, likely upgrades and maintenance, then subtract its estimated resale value. Compare that with cloud subscriptions and any extra charges. A break-even month exists only if the cloud option’s monthly costs exceed the PC’s monthly running costs: the PC’s net upfront cost divided by that monthly difference gives the estimate.

This is a cash-cost calculation, not a measure of convenience, flexibility, latency or ownership. There is no universal break-even month: the answer depends on your play hours, local electricity rate, PC price and resale value, and the service’s current regional terms.

What the break-even calculation tells you

Choose an analysis period first—for example, the years you expect to use a PC before replacing or upgrading it. Compare total costs across that same period, rather than comparing a PC’s purchase price with one month of cloud access.

For a simple monthly estimate, use:

  • Local PC recurring cost = monthly gaming hours × average whole-system power draw in kilowatts × your marginal electricity price per kWh + a monthly allowance for maintenance and upgrades.
  • Cloud recurring cost = subscription + paid extra hours or storage, if any + internet or device costs caused specifically by choosing cloud gaming.
  • Simple break-even months = (PC purchase cost − expected resale value + one-time local setup cost) ÷ (cloud recurring cost − local recurring cost).

The denominator must be positive for this formula to produce a break-even month. If it is zero or negative, cloud gaming does not recover the local PC’s upfront investment through monthly operating-cost savings under those assumptions. That does not mean cloud gaming is necessarily the wrong choice; it means the decision rests on factors beyond this cash-cost payback calculation.

Build a fair local-PC estimate

Start with a suitable PC quote

Get a current quote for a PC or build that meets your own performance needs. Do not assume that a cloud provider’s plan label maps directly to a particular retail GPU or PC price. Include one-time setup costs only if they are genuinely required for the local option.

Estimate resale, upgrades and maintenance

Subtract a realistic expected resale value at the end of your chosen period. Add only upgrades and maintenance you reasonably expect to pay for; a speculative upgrade can distort the result as much as ignoring a likely one.

Measure electricity using whole-system power

If you do not have a reliable estimate, measure the PC at the wall during representative gameplay with a plug-in power meter. Use average power in kilowatts, not the graphics card’s rated board power: the latter is not the whole system’s wall draw. Multiply by your actual gaming hours and marginal electricity tariff.

A California Energy Commission report estimated that, for conditions prevailing in 2016, cloud gaming added approximately 40–60% to otherwise total local annual desktop electricity use. That estimate was based on an earlier GeForce NOW beta, NVIDIA SHIELD TV and published data-center and network energy literature. It is historical and model-dependent, not a reliable multiplier for an individual’s current setup.

Build a fair cloud-service estimate

Use the terms available in your region

Record the current subscription price, monthly playtime allowance, rollover rules and extra-time charges for the service you would actually use. Add any device or broadband upgrade only if it is an incremental cost caused by cloud gaming. If you already pay for suitable broadband or own a compatible screen and controller, do not count their shared cost again.

As a dated U.S. published price reference, NVIDIA listed GeForce NOW Performance at $9.99 per month or $49.99 for six months, and Ultimate at $19.99 per month or $99.99 for six months. These are not guaranteed October 2026 checkout prices: NVIDIA says prices can change, and applicable taxes or fees may affect charges. Check the current regional offer before calculating.

NVIDIA says Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 monthly playtime hours, with up to 15 unused hours rolling into the following month. Members may buy additional premium time or continue on basic rigs until the monthly reset; the terms describe a monthly maximum. Check the current membership FAQ and terms for applicable details: NVIDIA GeForce NOW FAQ and NVIDIA Membership Terms.

Check what “cloud PC” means for your games

Services are not interchangeable. Shadow describes its offers as complete Windows 11 cloud PCs, with different use caps and service levels; its offer page is country-specific, so get the quote for your region at Shadow PC. GeForce NOW provides access to a cloud gaming rig, but supported titles and your rights to use the games matter. NVIDIA’s terms state that members are responsible for having sufficient rights to the games and downloadable content they use.

Xbox Cloud Gaming’s availability and included plans have changed over time. Microsoft’s December 2025 guide said it was available with Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate. Microsoft’s September 3, 2026 announcement described changes beginning in November 2026, including an option to use Xbox Cloud Gaming without Game Pass. Those dates and terms concern Microsoft’s offer as announced; check the live offer and your region after the change takes effect. See Xbox Cloud Gaming and Microsoft’s September 3, 2026 announcement.

Check whether your connection makes cloud gaming viable

Internet speed and route latency are feasibility inputs, not just costs. For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA’s U.S. system-requirements page lists bandwidth requirements including 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 fps, 35 Mbps for QHD or UW QHD at 120 fps, and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 fps. NVIDIA calls for latency below 80 ms to a data center and recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are GeForce NOW requirements, not universal specifications for every cloud service.

NVIDIA says generic speed tests do not test the route to its data centers. Check service availability for your location and use the in-app network test rather than treating a high general speed-test result as proof of suitability. Details are on NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW system requirements and NVIDIA’s support page.

Calculate the result with your own inputs

  1. Choose the time horizon. Use the period until the likely replacement or major upgrade, and use that same period for both options.
  2. Get a local PC quote. Match the computer to your needs rather than assuming a cloud plan’s performance label specifies a retail equivalent.
  3. Estimate the PC’s end value and extra costs. Include likely resale proceeds, upgrades, maintenance and any local setup cost; avoid counting unlikely purchases.
  4. Measure local power and hours. Use representative wall-power measurements, your marginal kWh rate and realistic monthly gaming hours.
  5. Price the actual cloud plan. Check regional subscription terms, playtime caps, rollover, extra-hour charges, supported games and any required device or internet upgrade.
  6. Run the formula and test alternatives. Compare total spend over the horizon as well as the simple break-even month. Recalculate with lower and higher play hours, electricity rates, resale estimates and subscription costs. Label each assumption so the result is not mistaken for a universal price or forecast.

For an already-owned PC, its original purchase price is a sunk cost in a forward-looking decision. Compare future electricity, maintenance and upgrade costs against cloud fees instead; include any resale value only if selling the PC is a real alternative. This avoids charging the decision with money already spent.

Compare total costs, not just the headline subscription

Question Why it changes the comparison
How many hours do you play each month? A fixed subscription can be costly per hour at low usage; high usage can run into plan caps or paid extra time.
What does the PC cost to own over the full period? Purchase price alone omits electricity, likely upgrades and maintenance, while ignoring resale can overstate net cost.
Do the service’s games fit your library? Game ownership, supported titles and rights to use content can make a nominally cheaper service an unsuitable substitute.
Do you need a full Windows PC or only game streaming? Shadow describes a complete Windows 11 cloud PC; GeForce NOW provides a gaming rig for supported games. Their flexibility is different.
Will your network and location work? Availability, route latency and service-specific bandwidth requirements affect whether cloud play is practical at all.
Are the device and internet costs incremental? Include only costs caused by the choice; shared broadband, screen or controller costs should not be counted twice.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your question is specifically about keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live 24/7, that is a different use case from cloud gaming. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists, not a way to stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. There is a free first day with no card, one free day per account. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month.

For this specific 24/7 YouTube use, StreamNeo has one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, runs from the cloud, and offers a free first day. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
