Calculate a Pakistan-listed share’s trailing dividend yield by dividing the cash dividends per share paid in the past 12 months by its current share price, then multiplying by 100. Use the same 12-month window and price date for every stock you compare, and treat the result as a historical measure—not a promise of future income.
A useful comparison goes beyond one percentage. Check the company’s payment history, payout relative to earnings, EPS, P/E, sector and market context, free float, trading activity, and your own need for income or capital growth. Also separate gross dividend income from the after-tax amount you may actually receive.

What dividend yield tells you
Dividend yield expresses cash dividends relative to a share’s price. The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) describes it as the cash value of the dividend divided by the share price. In practical comparisons, the figure helps you see how much recent cash distribution a share paid in relation to its current market price. It does not show whether the share price will rise or fall, or whether the company will pay the same dividend again. PSX’s guide to basic stock concepts covers dividend yield alongside other investment concepts.

Trailing 12-month dividend yield (%) = (cash dividends per share paid in the last 12 months ÷ current share price) × 100
For example, if a share paid Rs 12 per share in cash dividends over the past 12 months and trades at Rs 240, the calculation is (12 ÷ 240) × 100 = 5%. This is hypothetical arithmetic, not data for a particular company.
The result is a rate, not a rupee amount. A 5% yield on 100 shares of a Rs 240 stock does not mean you receive 5% of the entire value every month. It means the cash paid over the selected year was Rs 12 per share, or Rs 1,200 on 100 shares, before taxes and other costs. Your future cash flow can differ if the company changes its dividend, you buy at another price, or you hold a different number of shares.
How to calculate trailing yield
- Choose the share and record the price date. Note the company or ticker and the date of the market price you use. Prices change, so a yield figure without a price date can quickly become misleading. If you are comparing several stocks, use one common date or clearly explain why dates differ.
- Define the 12-month window. Work backward from the price date, or select another explicit 12-month period and use it consistently. Write down the start and end dates before collecting dividend information. This prevents accidentally mixing a calendar-year dividend total with a price from a different point in time.
- Total the cash dividends per share paid in the 12-month period. Include cash distributions whose payment dates fall within your chosen trailing 12 months. Add the per-share amounts if the company made more than one payment. Do not assume a single payment represents a full year’s dividends. PSX’s investor guide explains that companies may pay dividends more than once a year.
- Exclude amounts that are not cash dividends. The stated PSX measure is based on the cash value of the dividend. Keep a record of the cash amount per share used in your numerator and do not silently combine it with another type of distribution.
- Divide the total by the share price and multiply by 100. If the per-share total is Rs 12 and the price is Rs 240, the result is 5%. Keep the unrounded calculation in your worksheet and round only the displayed percentage so small differences do not arise from early rounding.
- Label the measure clearly. Call it “trailing 12-month yield” and state the price date. That signals that the numerator is based on past payments rather than a forecast.
PSX’s Dividend 20 methodology also uses trailing 12-month dividend yield to rank eligible companies. That makes the period useful for a consistent historical measure, but an index screen is not a forecast of future payments. Read the PSX Dividend 20 Index brochure.
A simple worksheet
Create one row per stock with columns for ticker, price date, share price, each cash payment and payment date, 12-month cash total, and calculated yield. For a company that paid Rs 4, Rs 3 and Rs 5 per share on three separate payment dates inside the period, the cash total is Rs 12. At a dated price of Rs 240, the yield is 5%. A second company should be calculated with the same window and a price from the same date before you rank the two percentages.
Keep payment dates visible rather than recording only an annual total. A payment just outside the window should not be included, and a payment inside it should not be missed merely because the company normally pays once a year. This audit trail also makes it easier to update the calculation when the price changes.
How to compare Pakistan stocks fairly
Yield is useful only when you compare like with like. Set the same measurement window and price date for each share, then consider the payout record, earnings, valuation, market context, liquidity and your own investment objective.

| Comparison factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Trailing yield | Cash dividends per share paid in the same trailing 12-month period, divided by prices recorded on the same date. | Different time windows or price dates make the percentages less comparable. |
| Dividend history and payout | Whether cash payments have been consistent, and the company’s payout in relation to its financial results. | A recent high yield does not establish that future payments will continue. PSXDIV20 screens for recent cash dividend payments and a minimum payout ratio in multiple financial years, alongside other criteria. |
| Earnings and valuation | Earnings per share (EPS) and price-to-earnings ratio (P/E), considered with the company’s ability to support distributions. | A yield viewed alone says little about the earnings and valuation behind it. PSX identifies EPS and P/E as basic stock concepts. |
| Price and market context | Share price, market capitalisation, sector performance and market activity. | Price changes affect the yield denominator, while company and sector context can help explain what is happening to the share. |
| Tradability | Free float and average 30-day volume, among other relevant screening information. | A yield comparison is not a complete view of whether a share fits your needs. PSXDIV20 also considers listing history, trading activity and free-float criteria when screening. |
| Personal objective and risk | Whether your aim is dividend income, capital gains or both, and how much risk you are prepared to take. | Two shares with similar yields can serve different objectives and carry different risks. PSX’s investor guidance recommends defining objectives, considering risk tolerance and diversifying. |
Start with a comparable data set
Use one snapshot date for all prices and record when the screener values were retrieved. If one company’s latest price is from a different trading day, say so instead of presenting the figures as a perfectly matched ranking. A yield shown to two decimal places can look precise even when the underlying dates are not aligned.

Then verify that every dividend in the numerator is a cash payment per share and that its payment date belongs to the selected period. A company that distributes twice a year may have a very different trailing total from a company that paid once. The frequency itself is not a reason to rank one stock above another; the total cash paid and the evidence supporting future payments matter more.
Read yield with payout and earnings
A payout ratio connects the dividend to the company’s financial results. PSXDIV20 uses recent cash-dividend payments and a minimum payout ratio in multiple financial years as part of its eligibility screening, together with other requirements. That is a way to identify companies with a documented distribution record, not a guarantee that an individual share will keep paying or that it will outperform.
EPS helps put the distribution in an earnings context. If two companies show the same trailing yield, compare whether their earnings and payout records provide a similar basis for that cash payment. P/E adds a valuation perspective: the market price may reflect expectations that are not visible in the yield alone. PSX lists EPS and P/E among basic stock concepts, so use them as companion measures rather than treating yield as a complete valuation test.
Include market size, sector and activity
Market capitalisation gives context about the scale of the listed company, while sector performance can explain why prices and payouts move differently across businesses. PSX investor guidance identifies company fundamentals, annual payouts, sector performance and market activity as factors in stock selection. These factors do not replace the calculation; they help you interpret it.
Free float and average 30-day volume provide information about the shares available for public trading and recent trading activity. A percentage that looks attractive may be less useful to an investor who needs dependable tradability. PSXDIV20 includes listing history, trading activity and free-float criteria in its technical screening, illustrating why a dividend screen is broader than a single yield column.
Use the PSX screener as a starting point
The PSX Data Portal’s Stock Screener displays yield alongside price, market capitalisation, P/E, free float and average 30-day volume, and provides a dividend-yield filter. Start by filtering the universe if that is useful, but open the company information and announcements before drawing a conclusion. A filter can organize candidates; it cannot tell you whether a payment will be repeated.
Its figures are time-sensitive. When using the screener, note the date of the values you are comparing. If you save a table for later, include the retrieval date in the file name or heading. Recheck the price and yield before making an investment decision because a price move changes the denominator even when the last paid dividend has not changed.
Why a high yield can be misleading
Price is the denominator in the formula. If a share price falls while its recent cash dividends stay unchanged, the calculated yield rises—even though the company has not increased its dividend. A high trailing figure can therefore reflect a falling price as well as a large payout.

Consider the same Rs 12 trailing dividend at two prices. At Rs 240 the yield is 5%; at Rs 150 it is 8%. The arithmetic change comes entirely from the lower price. It does not prove that the company has become a safer or more generous payer. Investigate the price and company context instead of assuming that the higher percentage is automatically better.
The trailing yield is backward-looking: it records cash paid during a past 12-month period. It cannot establish what a company will pay next. Past distributions and today’s yield do not guarantee a future dividend, so do not treat the percentage as a promised return or as a sufficient reason to buy a share.
Another pitfall is comparing a historical yield for one stock with a forward estimate for another. The numbers may look similar while representing different assumptions. Mark each figure as trailing or forward, show the period, and explain any projection. If a company has only recently begun paying or has changed its payment pattern, a single 12-month total may provide limited history; that is a reason to investigate further, not a reason to manufacture a longer record.
Trailing yield versus a forward estimate
A trailing yield uses cash dividends already paid in a defined period. A forward yield instead estimates what a share might pay over a future period, usually by making an assumption about an announced or projected payout. The reviewed PSX materials establish the trailing measure but do not prescribe one universal convention for calculating forward yield.
If you choose to calculate a forward estimate, label it as an estimate and state the assumed dividend amount and period. Keep it separate from historical yield: an announced or projected payout is not the same as cash already paid, and the estimate may not be realised.
For example, you might write “forward estimate: Rs 12 per share, assuming the announced amount is paid over the next period.” Do not place that Rs 12 in the trailing numerator until it has actually been paid within the relevant 12-month window. Keep a separate column for announced or projected amounts so an update does not overwrite the historical record.
Estimate cash income, not just a percentage
To turn a dividend assumption into a simple gross cash estimate, multiply the assumed cash dividend per share by the number of shares held. For example, an assumed Rs 12 per share on 100 shares would equal Rs 1,200 before considering applicable taxes and brokerage costs. This arithmetic does not predict that a company will make that payment, and it does not calculate an investor’s after-tax return.

The same approach works with a historical amount: Rs 12 per share multiplied by 100 shares describes the cash paid over the selected period, not the value of the shares or a guaranteed annual income. If you compare portfolios, calculate each holding separately and add the gross amounts only after confirming that the periods and payment definitions match.

PSX notes that taxes and brokerage commissions affect returns, and commission varies by firm. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) withholding tax rate cards page identifies a Tax Year 2027 card updated through 30 June 2026 under Finance Act 2026. The dividend-specific rate is not established here; check the current card and applicable rules for your circumstances rather than relying on an older rate. Do not subtract a guessed tax rate from a yield and present the result as a verified net yield.
For a personal after-tax estimate, first identify the applicable FBR rate and your circumstances, then apply that rule to the gross dividend amount. Keep brokerage commissions and any other charges separate from withholding tax. If you cannot verify a current rate, report gross cash only and state that net income requires confirmation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical comparison example
Suppose Stock A paid Rs 12 per share during the selected 12 months and traded at Rs 240 on the comparison date. Stock B paid Rs 9 per share and traded at Rs 150 on that same date. Stock A’s trailing yield is 5%; Stock B’s is 6%. The calculation ranks Stock B higher on this single measure, but it does not answer which investment is preferable.
Next, examine whether each payment was consistent, how the payout relates to earnings, and what the EPS and P/E indicate. Check market capitalisation, sector performance, free float and average 30-day volume. Review the companies’ current announcements and financial information, define whether you need income or also seek capital gains, and consider your tolerance for risk. The example demonstrates why a higher percentage is a screening result rather than a complete decision.
A practical comparison checklist
- Use cash dividends per share paid in the same trailing 12-month window for every company.
- Record one comparable share-price date, and label each result “trailing 12-month yield.”
- List every included payment and its payment date so the numerator can be checked.
- Check the payment history and payout in relation to financial results, not just the yield percentage.
- Consider EPS, P/E, company and sector context, price movement, market capitalisation, free float and average 30-day volume.
- Use the PSX screener as a dated starting point, then review company announcements and financial information.
- Separate historical yield from any forward estimate, and state the assumptions behind an estimate.
- Define whether your goal is dividend income, capital gains or both, and consider risk and diversification.
- Calculate gross cash separately from any after-tax estimate.
- Check current company information, the applicable FBR tax card and brokerage costs before estimating spendable income.
PSX’s Financial Literacy Initiative provides investor guidance on stock selection factors, including fundamentals, annual payouts, sector performance and market activity.
Account and broker considerations
Once your comparison identifies shares you want to investigate, use a PSX-recognised and SECP-licensed brokerage firm and compare its fees and services. PSX provides a broker directory for finding firms; inclusion in a directory is not an endorsement of a particular broker. Ask how commissions are charged, what market information is supplied and how statements show dividend receipts. Brokerage commission varies by firm, and it affects realized returns even though it does not change the quoted dividend-yield formula.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dividend-yield formula for a PSX stock?
Divide cash dividends per share paid during the trailing 12 months by the share price, then multiply by 100. For Rs 12 of cash dividends and a Rs 240 price, the trailing yield is 5%.

Best Value
Why can a stock’s yield rise when its dividend does not?
Because price is the denominator. If the share price falls while the recent cash dividend stays Rs 12, the yield rises even though the company has not increased its payout.
Is a high dividend yield automatically better?
No. Compare payout history, earnings, EPS, P/E, sector and market context, free float, average 30-day volume, and your own objectives and risk tolerance. A high trailing yield can reflect a falling price.
What is the difference between trailing and forward yield?
Trailing yield uses cash already paid in a defined period. Forward yield is an estimate based on an announced or projected payout and must be labelled with its assumptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use the PSX screener’s yield figure without checking the date?
Use it as a starting point, but record the retrieval date. Screener values are time-sensitive, and prices can change the yield even when the last dividend has not changed.
How do I estimate the gross dividend cash I might receive?
Multiply the assumed cash dividend per share by your number of shares. Rs 12 per share on 100 shares is Rs 1,200 before taxes and brokerage costs.
How do I calculate an after-tax dividend yield in Pakistan?
Confirm the current FBR withholding-tax rate and rules for your circumstances, then apply them to the gross dividend amount. Do not use an unverified or outdated rate; brokerage costs should be considered separately.
The Bottom Line
For a comparable Pakistan-stock measure, add cash dividends per share paid in the same trailing 12-month window, divide by each stock’s price on one stated date, and multiply by 100. Then test the result against payout history, earnings, EPS, P/E, sector and market context, tradability, taxes, costs and your own risk objective. A high percentage is a clue to investigate—not a promise of future income.
