To estimate a possible payback period, include the chance of paying for another attempt, study time, and other expenses—then divide that total by a monthly salary increase you believe is realistic. The result is a scenario, not a prediction that a credential will raise your pay.
What the calculator measures
The model estimates the cost of earning a certification and how many months a hypothetical salary increase would take to offset that cost. It makes four inputs visible: exam fee, retake probability, study hours and their hourly value, and additional expenses. Its answer is only as credible as those estimates, especially the assumed monthly salary lift.

Use one currency throughout. Include taxes or currency conversion in the fee or extras if they apply to your situation, and make sure the salary lift is stated in the same currency and on a monthly basis.
Enter your assumptions
- Exam fee: The amount charged for one attempt in your location, including applicable taxes if you want them counted.
- Retake probability: Your estimate, from 0 to 1, that you will need one additional paid attempt. For example, 0.25 represents a 25% estimated chance. It is not a universal pass rate.
- Study hours: The time you expect to spend preparing.
- Hourly value: What an hour of that time is worth to you. A full wage rate may overstate the opportunity cost if you study outside paid work hours; choose an assumption that reflects your circumstances.
- Extras: Other costs you want included, such as paid practice materials, labs, or travel.
- Monthly salary lift: The monthly increase you are using as a personal scenario. Do not treat it as a guaranteed result of passing.
Use the formulas
- Expected exam cost = exam fee × (1 + retake probability)
- Study-time cost = study hours × hourly value
- Total modeled cost = expected exam cost + study-time cost + extras
- Payback period in months = total modeled cost ÷ monthly salary lift
Round the payback result to one decimal place for readability. If the monthly salary lift is zero or negative, the model has no finite payback period; it should return infinity rather than imply that the cost will be recovered.
#1 Best Overall
The retake formula weights one possible extra attempt by the probability you enter. It does not model several retakes, and its arithmetic does not account for taxes on a salary increase, certification renewal, financing costs, or the value of money over time. Add those separately or adapt the model if they matter to your decision.
Worked examples: what the inputs do
The following figures are illustrative assumptions and outputs from the indexed Sherdil IT Academy article, not independently verified local exam prices or wage effects. Both use an hourly value of PKR 400.
| Scenario | Exam fee | Retake probability | Study hours | Extras | Assumed monthly salary lift | Reported total cost | Reported payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AZ-104 | PKR 46,000 | 0.25 | 80 | PKR 8,000 | PKR 35,000 | PKR 97,500 | 2.8 months |
| Google Cloud Professional-level exam | PKR 56,000 | 0.35 | 140 | PKR 12,000 | PKR 45,000 | PKR 143,600 | 3.2 months |
In these examples, the second scenario has nearly 50% higher modeled cost but a payback period only about half a month longer. That follows from the chosen inputs, including the larger assumed salary lift; it is not evidence that one credential produces a particular wage outcome. The source does not establish that either salary increase is caused by certification.

Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
Microsoft describes AZ-104 as an intermediate Azure Administrator Associate exam covering Azure identities and governance, storage, compute, networking, and monitoring. Microsoft says the fee depends on exam location; its page displayed $165 USD, which does not validate the PKR fee used in the illustrative example. Check the fee for your location before calculating. The page also lists an AZ-104 study guide and practice assessment. Microsoft states that a first retake can be taken after 24 hours, subject to its full retake policy, and that the credential renews every 12 months through a no-cost online assessment. Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect
Google Cloud lists the Professional Cloud Architect standard exam at $200 plus applicable tax, with a two-hour exam and certification validity of two years. It recommends at least three years of industry experience, including one or more years designing and managing Google Cloud solutions. Preparation options listed include the exam guide, a learning path, online training, in-person classes, and hands-on labs. These details describe this specific credential, not every Professional-level exam. Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect certification page.
Google Cloud’s exam terms say payment is required each time an exam is taken. Associate and Professional candidates may take an exam at most four times within a two-year period. After a failed attempt, the stated waits are 14 days, then 60 days, then 365 days before the fourth attempt. Professional certifications are valid for two years, and renewal requires passing the applicable exam. Terms can change, so verify them before booking. Google Cloud exam terms.

Make the result useful for a decision
Before comparing credentials, put their inputs on the same footing: geography and currency, official exam fee and tax, retake and renewal rules, expected preparation time, opportunity-cost assumption, and necessary materials or labs. Then ask whether the credential fits the role you want and whether employers in your location value it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLook for evidence for your salary-lift assumption that matches your target role and labor market. The certification pages above explain exam scope, eligibility recommendations, preparation, and renewal; they do not establish a salary premium or show that certification alone causes a pay increase. Keep that uncertainty separate from the arithmetic.
Finally, treat payback as one input rather than the whole decision. A short modeled payback cannot tell you whether demand for the credential will last, whether you want to do the underlying work, or whether the study effort is worthwhile for reasons beyond salary.
