To buy XRP, use a platform available in your country that supports XRP purchases, fund your account, and place an order. Before depositing money, check the platform’s fees, withdrawal rules, and whether you can move XRP to a wallet you control. Keeping XRP on the platform means the provider holds the keys; moving it to a self-custody wallet gives you control but also makes you responsible for protecting the keys and recovery information.
Choose how you want to buy and hold XRP
There are two separate decisions: how to get exposure to XRP, and who will control the asset afterward. A platform purchase may leave XRP in the provider’s custody. A self-custody wallet instead gives you control of the private keys for an XRP Ledger account. A brokerage product may provide exposure through a different legal structure rather than direct ownership of XRP, so check what the product actually represents.

| Option | Who controls the keys? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Platform custody | The platform holds the keys while XRP remains on the platform. | Whether withdrawals to a user-controlled XRP Ledger wallet are supported, applicable limits and fees, account security, and access in your location. |
| Self-custody software or hardware wallet | You control the keys and are responsible for protecting them and recovery information. | Current XRP support, official download or purchase source, recovery process, and the steps for verifying a transfer. |
| Brokerage-access product | Depends on the product structure; it may not give you direct custody of XRP. | What you own, how the product is held, fees, and whether you can withdraw XRP to an XRP Ledger wallet. |
These are general distinctions, not a promise that a particular provider offers a given payment method, product, or withdrawal feature. Availability and rules vary by provider and jurisdiction.

A common platform flow is to deposit an accepted government-issued currency or another supported digital asset, then place a purchase order. The SEC-hosted filing describing this intermediary pattern says the platform does not ordinarily move XRP to an investor’s XRP Ledger wallet unless the customer requests an off-platform withdrawal. That description is general, not a guarantee about every service or interface. [SEC-hosted filing]

Choose an XRP wallet carefully
An XRP wallet is software or a device used to control the private keys for an XRP Ledger account; it does not remove the responsibility of safeguarding those credentials. SEC-hosted filing material describes hardware, software, and custodial wallets as wallet types for XRP. It does not establish current compatibility for a particular product. [SEC-hosted filing]
Software wallet
A software wallet may be more convenient for routine access, but it relies on the security of the device and the wallet software. Obtain software only from a source verified through the wallet maker’s official channels. Confirm current XRP support and understand how the wallet backs up and restores access before transferring funds.

Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a physical option for self-custody. Before buying one, verify that the exact model and its current companion software support XRP, using the manufacturer’s official compatibility documentation. Do not assume that a device advertised as a crypto hardware wallet supports XRP.
Custodial wallet
A custodial wallet leaves key control with a service provider. Check who controls the keys, what recovery and account protections the provider offers, and whether the service allows XRP withdrawals. The word “wallet” alone does not tell you whether you have self-custody.

Protect a self-custody transfer
Moving XRP off a platform can reduce reliance on that platform for ongoing custody, but it makes safe key management and accurate transfers your responsibility. Before sending:
- Obtain the wallet or device through verified official sources and confirm its current XRP compatibility.
- Set up the wallet using its official instructions, and keep recovery credentials offline in a secure place. Never share private keys or recovery words with anyone.
- Check the destination and network details carefully against the receiving wallet’s instructions. Do not rely on an address copied from an unverified message or site.
- Review the sending platform’s withdrawal requirements, charges, limits, and any destination-information fields before confirming.
- Keep your own record of the transfer details. If any instruction is unclear, stop and verify it with the wallet maker or platform through its official support channel.
SEC-hosted registration material describes XRP Ledger account-reserve and transaction-cost figures, but those figures may change with protocol amendments or network conditions. They should not be treated as current transfer instructions; consult current XRP Ledger documentation before relying on a specific amount. [SEC-hosted filing]

What the U.S. Ripple case established
The U.S. case does not support a blanket statement that XRP is simply “cleared” or “illegal.” In a May 8, 2025 statement, SEC Commissioner Caroline A. Crenshaw described the district court’s distinction: Ripple’s institutional XRP sales were found to constitute unregistered offers and sales of investment contracts, while other secondary offers and sales were not. The statement also discussed a proposed settlement framework. [SEC commissioner statement, May 8, 2025]

On August 7, 2025, the SEC said the Commission and Ripple dismissed their appeals and the district court’s final judgment remained in effect, including a civil penalty of $125,035,150 and an injunction. The separate settlement proposal is not the same thing as that final judgment. This is a description of the U.S. case record as of that SEC release, not a ruling on every XRP transaction, a statement of law in other countries, or a guarantee that a platform will list XRP. Price and product risk
XRP’s value can fluctuate with supply, demand, and speculation. It is a digital asset, not company equity and not a bond-like claim to income, according to issuer filing disclosures. You can lose money, and no general buying path establishes whether XRP is suitable for your circumstances. [SEC-hosted filing]
Quick Recap
Use a pre-purchase safety checklist
- Access: Is XRP available to buy and withdraw through this provider in your location?
- Custody: Will the provider hold the keys, or will you control them in a compatible wallet?
- Withdrawal: Can you send XRP to a user-controlled XRP Ledger wallet, and what limits, fees, or requirements apply?
- Recovery: If you choose self-custody, do you understand how to protect and restore access without sharing secrets?
- Costs: Have you checked purchase fees or spreads as well as deposit, withdrawal, and service charges?
- Product structure: If using a brokerage product, have you confirmed whether it represents direct XRP ownership or another form of exposure?
- Risk: Are you prepared for the possibility that the asset’s value may fall, including substantially?
