Canceling Game Pass does not turn its included games into purchases. To keep playing a particular title, buy that exact game or keep an eligible subscription active. For the lowest practical cost, compare the live Microsoft Store price for the edition you want with any offer currently shown on your account and, if your Xbox has a disc drive, the total price of a compatible physical copy.
What happens to Game Pass games when you cancel?
Game Pass provides access while your subscription is active and the game remains available through the service; it does not give you a permanent license to every included game. If you want to play a title after your access ends, purchase that title separately or retain an eligible active subscription. Microsoft’s Microsoft Services Agreement explains the licensing basis for digital goods.

Compare the real cost before buying
Prices vary by game, edition, region and date, so there is no reliable universal savings percentage. Look up the exact title and edition in the Microsoft Store and compare the current sale price with the regular price shown there. If the game is not urgent and the price is not attractive, waiting for another sale may cost less.

- Current total price: Compare the live Store listing with a physical copy’s price, including delivery and condition.
- Access type: A digital purchase is linked to your Microsoft account and console licensing; a disc requires the qualifying disc to play.
- Compatibility: Confirm the disc matches your console and that the console has a disc drive.
- Timing: Consider whether a current sale or account-visible offer is worth acting on, or whether you can wait.
- Cross-device play: Check whether the exact digital game supports Xbox Play Anywhere and whether your PC meets the publisher’s requirements.
If you are still subscribed, check for an offer before access ends
Xbox’s November 17, 2020 guide said eligible members could use a Game Pass member discount to buy a game before it left the library. The guide also said, “We’ll give you a couple weeks’ notice before a game leaves.” Those are historical statements, not a guarantee of today’s discount, notice period or eligibility. Check the current listing and the offers visible on your own account before relying on a member price.

Are used Xbox games cheaper?
A used or new disc can be worth comparing if your console has a disc drive and the game is sold in a compatible physical edition. Compare the full cost—not just the sticker price—and check the disc’s condition and the console generation it supports. Not every game has a physical release, and a disc is not interchangeable with a digital purchase.
On August 26, 2026, Xbox Wire announced that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. Microsoft’s disc-to-digital support rules make clear that eligibility is title-specific and can change. The entitlement depends on continuing to possess the qualifying disc and may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have it. The disc also continues to work as before; this feature does not turn every disc into an independent digital copy.

What a digital Xbox purchase lets you do
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games as using a user license associated with your Microsoft account and a device license associated with a designated Home console. Under the stated usage rules, a game can be played on only one console at a time. A digital purchase is therefore a different kind of access from both a subscription and a disc.
Xbox Play Anywhere is limited to participating digital games, not every Xbox purchase. If you want to use a game on both Xbox and PC, check for the Play Anywhere icon on the specific Store listing and review the publisher’s PC system requirements before buying.

Can Microsoft Rewards points lower the price?
Xbox’s 2020 guide to Game Pass described earning Microsoft Rewards points through Quests and using points toward Microsoft Store credit. That article does not establish today’s earning options, redemption terms or value. Check the current Rewards account and terms before counting points as a discount.
