You generally do not exchange Bitcoin directly for shares. For example, Coinbase says stock trades settle in U.S. dollars; USDC held in its wallet may be converted to USD for payment, subject to limitations. Availability, eligible assets, order types and investor protections depend on your country and the specific product.
This guide explains how the process works, using Coinbase’s current U.S. and U.K. offering as a clearly identified example—not as a rule for every crypto exchange.

Can you buy stocks on a crypto exchange?
Sometimes. A crypto company may add access to a regulated brokerage service alongside its digital-asset trading. The stock feature can appear in the same mobile app, but that does not necessarily mean the crypto company itself is your stock broker. Coinbase identifies Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. (CCM) as the securities provider for its stock service and says that service is separate from Coinbase Inc.’s digital-asset business. Its onboarding page states that customers residing in the United States or United Kingdom can trade eligible U.S.-listed stocks after creating a CCM brokerage account and completing onboarding, although the product list differs by country.
The key question is not whether an app has a “stocks” tab. It is what legal product you are being offered:

- Actual shares: You purchase an ownership interest in a publicly traded company through a brokerage account.
- Tokenized stock: A digital token is designed to track or represent economic exposure to a share. Rights, custody, transferability and regulation depend on the issuer and jurisdiction; a token is not automatically the same as a conventional brokerage-held share.
- Stock perpetual future: A derivatives contract tracks the price of a share or equity basket without giving you the underlying stock. Coinbase describes its stock perps as USDC-settled, leveraged contracts with funding payments.
Read the product disclosure before funding an order. The word “stock” in a menu does not by itself establish that you will receive voting rights, dividends, direct registration, or the protections attached to a conventional securities account.

What to check before you start
Stock access is normally gated by residence, age, identity checks, account status and the rules of the securities provider. Confirm each item before transferring money.

How to buy a stock: the Coinbase example
The labels and rollout can change, but the following sequence reflects Coinbase’s published stock-buy instructions. Use it only if the stock service is offered to your verified residence and your account has been approved.
- Confirm eligibility. Check your residence against the current Coinbase onboarding page. The page identifies U.S. availability for stocks and funds and U.K. availability for stocks. Products and countries can change.
- Open the securities account. Sign in to Coinbase.com or the mobile app, select the stock offering, and start onboarding for a Coinbase Capital Markets brokerage account. Supply the requested information and complete any additional review. Do not assume that approval for crypto trading also approves the brokerage account.
- Make eligible funds available. The published buy instructions list cash in USD, USDC, or transferred equities. If you use USDC in a Coinbase wallet, Coinbase says it is automatically converted to USD for a stock purchase, subject to limitations. This is a conversion-and-settlement process, not a direct crypto-for-share swap. Confirm the quoted conversion and available balance before submitting.
- Open the stock-buy screen. In the mobile flow described by Coinbase, choose Buy & Sell, then Buy. Search for the company or fund and select the instrument shown as available for your account.
- Choose the permitted order type. Enter the number of shares and price conditions requested by the interface. Coinbase’s cited instructions say the described stock-buy flow supports whole-share limit orders; a gradual rollout means your screen may differ or the feature may not yet be enabled.
- Review the order. Check the symbol, share quantity, limit price, estimated total, funding currency, any displayed fee or spread, and the account identified as the securities provider. A limit order can remain unfilled if the market never reaches your price.
- Confirm and monitor status. Submit only after reviewing the final confirmation. Look for an open, partially filled, filled, canceled or rejected status. A partial fill means only some requested shares traded; the remainder may stay open or be canceled according to the order rules.
- Keep settlement in mind. Coinbase’s comparison describes stock settlement as T+1—one business day after the trade date. Proceeds from a sale may therefore be unavailable for withdrawal or another purchase until settlement completes.
For the provider’s current requirements and screen-specific limitations, consult Buy and sell stocks and funds. Mobile availability is being rolled out gradually, so an eligible customer may not see the feature immediately.

Can you pay with Bitcoin or USDC?
Do not describe the transaction as buying a share directly with Bitcoin. In the Coinbase instructions, stock trades settle in USD. USDC in the Coinbase wallet can be converted to USD for payment, subject to the stated limitations. The operational sequence is therefore:
- Hold an accepted funding asset or transfer eligible cash/equities.
- Let the platform perform any required conversion into the stock-settlement currency.
- Submit the securities order from the brokerage interface.
- Receive the resulting share position only if the order fills.
If your platform accepts another crypto asset, it may sell or convert that asset before placing the securities order; that is platform-specific and should be confirmed in its terms. A crypto balance, a USD cash balance and a settled securities position are separate things. The app’s combined interface should not be treated as proof that the assets share one custody or protection regime.

What do you own after the order fills?
Ownership depends on the legal instrument, not the app’s branding.

Coinbase explains that ordinary stocks trade through brokerage accounts and execute on national exchanges such as the NYSE and Nasdaq. Its stock-perpetual-futures explanation says those contracts track listed equities or baskets “without owning the underlying shares.” Read the contract specification for any token or derivative before treating it as an investment in the company itself.
Stocks, tokens and perps: the practical differences
Voting and corporate actions
A conventional share may carry voting, dividend and corporate-action rights according to its class and the broker’s custody arrangement. A token or derivative may instead provide only contractual price exposure. Never infer rights from a ticker symbol or a logo; locate the legal terms governing dividends, splits, voting, redemptions and insolvency.

Leverage and liquidation
Buying a fully paid share does not create a margin position unless you separately borrow or use margin. A perpetual future commonly uses leverage and can be liquidated when collateral is insufficient. Funding payments can move between long and short positions, so performance may diverge from simply holding the stock.
Transfer and withdrawal
Brokerage shares may be transferable under the broker’s procedures. A token can have wallet, whitelist or jurisdiction restrictions, while a derivative generally cannot be withdrawn as the underlying equity. Check whether the product can leave the platform and which entity records your interest.
Trading hours and settlement are not the same as crypto
Coinbase’s comparison describes stocks as trading 24/5 from Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, while crypto is described as trading 24/7. The exact stock session, pre-market or after-hours access depends on the provider and venue; do not assume that a displayed quote can be executed at every hour.

Stock perpetual futures are a separate product. Coinbase describes them as offering 24/7 trading, but that continuous contract market does not turn the underlying company’s shares into a 24/7 security.

Broker, custodian and investor protection
Identify the legal entities before depositing money. Coinbase’s disclosures name Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. as the securities provider and Apex Clearing Corporation for execution, clearing and custody of securities. A separate U.K. arrangement uses CB Payments Ltd. The entity named in your agreement, not merely the consumer app’s brand, determines which rules and protections apply.
Coinbase identifies CCM as a FINRA/SIPC member, but its disclosures also state that SIPC does not apply to digital assets or cash held in Coinbase Inc. or an affiliate account. That means you must determine whether a particular balance is in the securities account, a crypto account or another affiliated arrangement. SIPC membership should not be read as insurance for every asset displayed in the app, and it does not protect losses caused by a falling share price.
Before trading, find the account agreement, fee schedule, custody disclosure, dispute process and risk statement. If the app offers a token or derivative, read that product’s issuer and counterparty terms separately. Current regional information is also summarized on Coinbase’s Trade page information.
Why the stocks feature may not appear
Your country is not supported
Crypto availability is broader than securities availability. Confirm the residence attached to your verified profile and consult the provider’s current country list. A virtual location, travel, or changing an account address does not establish legal eligibility.
Brokerage onboarding is incomplete
Look for identity, address, tax-residency or suitability requests in the securities onboarding flow. Resolve name and address mismatches using the provider’s support process rather than opening duplicate accounts.
The rollout has not reached your account
Coinbase says its mobile stock feature is gradually rolling out. Update the official app, sign in through the normal account, and check the web version if the provider supports it. Do not send funds to an unofficial “early access” link.
The instrument is unavailable
A platform can support stocks generally while excluding a particular company, fund, share class or country listing. Search the exact ticker and read the instrument details; an unavailable result is not evidence that the company has stopped trading.
You are viewing a different product
A “perpetual,” “synthetic,” “token,” “index” or “leveraged” label indicates a different legal and risk profile from a conventional share. Return to the product description and verify ownership, settlement currency, leverage, funding and withdrawal rules.

Fees, order limits and cash management
Do not rely on a generic crypto-fee assumption. Coinbase’s comparison notes that transaction fees or commissions may apply, but the cited material does not establish a current amount. Review the live order preview and fee schedule for your country and account. Also check for currency-conversion costs, spreads, regulatory charges, transfer fees, inactivity rules or fees associated with moving settled proceeds.
Order limits matter as much as headline pricing. The Coinbase mobile instructions describe whole-share limit orders in the stated flow; fractional shares, market orders and recurring purchases may be unavailable or offered under different rules. If a limit order remains open, the reserved cash may not be available for another trade until the order is canceled or filled.
Separate three balances in your records:
- Unsettled trade proceeds: money from a sale that may still be subject to T+1 settlement.
- Settled brokerage cash: funds available under the securities account’s withdrawal and trading rules.
- Crypto wallet balance: digital assets governed by the crypto service’s custody and transfer rules.
A decision checklist before placing any order
- Is stock trading legally available in your country and enabled for your account?
- Did you complete the separate brokerage onboarding?
- Does the screen say share, token, future, CFD or another derivative?
- Which entity executes and custodies the position?
- What currency will settle the order, and will any USDC or other asset be converted first?
- Is the order whole-share or fractional, market or limit, and what happens to an unfilled remainder?
- What are the market hours and holiday schedule?
- When will sale proceeds become settled under T+1 or the product’s stated schedule?
- What fees, spreads, funding payments or conversion charges are shown?
- Which balances are covered by the stated investor-protection regime, and which are explicitly excluded?
How to compare a crypto platform’s stock offering with a normal broker
If your exchange lacks the feature, compare a conventional brokerage or another eligible provider using the same questions rather than choosing solely for app convenience.

Document the answers for the exact country and product you intend to use. A low-friction crypto interface can be convenient, but convenience does not remove securities-account rules, settlement delays or derivative risk.
