Buy second-hand IKEA furniture only after you have identified the exact item, inspected its condition and completeness, checked its recall status, and confirmed the sale terms. IKEA’s U.S. As-Is service offers an inspection before resale, but private listings do not automatically come with that check or IKEA’s return protections. Services and consumer rights vary by country.
Start with the exact item and its condition
- Confirm what is being sold. Ask for the product name and, if available, a label, product number, or original IKEA documentation. Compare the listing with the actual piece: dimensions, configuration, finish, and included components should match. Clear identification also helps you look up the right assembly and safety information.
- Inspect the actual furniture. Compare it with the photographs and written description, and ask about anything unclear. Check stability, joints, structure, doors, drawers, and other moving parts. Look for cracks, looseness, water damage, substantial wear, missing hardware, or changes that were not disclosed. These are practical checks; IKEA does not publish this exact checklist.
- Confirm completeness. Ask which shelves, fittings, fasteners, and other parts are included. If a piece has been modified or painted, factor that into your decision: IKEA’s U.S. buyback terms require eligible items to be unmodified, and a modification can also make it harder to establish the correct instructions or hardware.
Check recalls and anchoring needs before use
Use IKEA’s current recall information for the relevant country and product category before buying. IKEA U.S. recall information explains how to check products and what to do if one is recalled. IKEA says, “When a recall is issued for an IKEA product you own, please stop using the product immediately.” Its U.S. guidance says proof of purchase is not required to return a recalled item; see the recall return instructions for the available route.

If an item appears to be recalled, do not buy it for use. IKEA’s recall guidance says to stop using recalled products immediately; disconnect a recalled product that requires power as an added precaution. For a recalled chest or dresser that is not properly anchored, IKEA’s U.S. instruction is to stop using it and place it somewhere children cannot access. An anchor is not a substitute for checking recall status.

Choose a sales channel with its protections in mind
IKEA U.S. As-Is
IKEA U.S. offers As-Is items online and in store. Stock may include discontinued products, gently used pieces, showroom displays, new old stock, and returned or sold-back items that IKEA has inspected for resale suitability. Store inventory changes daily. The inspection is useful, but it does not replace your own assessment of the particular item or a recall check. Details are on IKEA’s U.S. second-hand furniture page.
For As-Is Online, IKEA says buyers sign in to an IKEA Family account, select a store, review listing photos and comments in the defects tab, reserve the item, then collect and inspect it at that store before paying. A reservation lasts 48 hours. You can decline to proceed if the in-store assessment or price is unsatisfactory. IKEA says As-Is items, including online reservations, are excluded from its normal return policy, so inspect before you pay.

Private sellers and other marketplaces
A private listing may offer more choice, but the seller, marketplace, and local rules determine what verification or protection you actually have. Request current photos of the specific item and written confirmation of its condition and missing parts. Agree in advance on the price, payment method, collection or delivery, and what happens if the item differs from the description. Where practical, inspect the furniture before completing payment. IKEA’s store inspection and recall-return process do not automatically apply to an outside sale.
Marketplace terms are local and specific
IKEA UK’s Marketplace Buyer Protection policy, effective September 16, 2026, applies to qualifying purchases made through that marketplace. It asks buyers to inspect at pickup and allows a refund request within 48 hours after accepting an item that significantly differs from its listing. The policy describes a 5% buyer-protection fee for covered purchases and excludes free items and transactions arranged outside the marketplace. Understand what IKEA buyback does—and does not—tell you
IKEA U.S. Buy Back & Resell terms, effective October 26, 2022, cover certain used IKEA items at participating locations. The terms name KALLAX shelf units, BILLY bookcases, ALEX drawer units, MICKE desks, and BESTÅ storage combinations as eligible product types. Items must be fully assembled and functional, structurally sound, safe, resalable, and unmodified. The terms exclude, among other things, chests of drawers, upholstered furniture, beds, mattresses, modified or painted items, and recalled products. Participation depends on the store, and terms may change; check current local U.S. buyback terms.
Buyback eligibility is not a guarantee that every used IKEA item is safe or suitable to purchase. IKEA UK’s separate guidance covers different categories and requires accepted furniture to be clean, complete, assembled, functional, unmodified, and recognizable as IKEA. Work out the total cost and collection plan
Before agreeing to buy, compare the asking price with the full effort and cost of getting the furniture home and ready to use. Confirm its assembled dimensions, whether it needs disassembly, whether your vehicle and route can accommodate it, and who will load it. Include any likely cost or effort for missing parts, repairs, or installation. For wall-attached furniture, establish what suitable hardware and installation are needed before use.
There is no universal delivery arrangement for private sales. Confirm who is responsible for collection or delivery, and settle payment and pickup details before travelling. For IKEA As-Is Online, the selected store handles collection after reservation; check the listing and store process for the specific item.
