To buy physical gold or silver wisely, compare the product’s fine-metal weight with the current spot price, then compare the seller’s full retail price with its written buyback quote. Check whether you are buying bullion or a collectible, verify the seller and product claims, and account for delivery, storage, insurance, and other fees before paying. Spot is a price baseline—not the amount you will necessarily pay or recover when you sell.
How to compare a bullion price with spot
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) define spot as the cash price for immediate delivery of physical metal, quoted in dollars per troy ounce. It is the starting point for a comparison, not a retail price. See the agencies’ 2024 investor advisory on precious metals.

- Identify the fine-metal weight. Use the amount of gold or silver in the product, not simply its total weight if it contains other metals. Compare items with the same metal, product type, and fine-metal weight.
- Record spot and the quote time. Spot moves, so use a current quote and note when you captured it. For an item containing one troy ounce of fine metal, the spot-value baseline is one ounce multiplied by the quoted spot price; for other weights, multiply by the corresponding fraction or number of ounces.
- Get the full retail price in writing. Ask for the agreed price, commissions, fees, shipping, and any other charges. Keep payment method and delivery terms consistent when comparing sellers.
- Ask for the buyback quote. Ask what the dealer would pay if you sold the same item back, including how that quote is determined. A dealer typically sells above spot and buys back below it; the gap is the spread. Compare the retail and buyback figures, not just the premium over spot.
- Add ongoing costs. Include storage, insurance, and administrative charges where applicable. The metal’s price must rise enough to cover the costs of buying, holding, and selling before you break even.
There is no single “fair premium” established for every product or seller. Premiums and buyback offers vary, and the official sources do not provide a representative average retail premium or dealer spread that applies to all buyers. Compare like with like at the same quote time, and do not treat a seller’s promise to buy back metal as a promise of profit.
Choose bullion or a collectible deliberately
Bullion
Bullion is valued primarily by the weight of its precious metal. Compare its fine-metal weight, purity, retail price, and buyback offer. U.S. Mint bullion coins are genuine Mint issues with government-guaranteed weight, content, and purity, but that guarantee does not authenticate an individual coin being offered for sale.

Collectible or numismatic coins
Commemorative and numismatic coins may derive value from factors such as rarity, condition, age, or limited mintage, in addition to metal content. A collectible premium is not proof that you will recover that premium when selling. Ask the seller to explain the basis for the price and how the item’s buyback value is determined.
Where to buy and how to screen a seller
The U.S. Mint does not sell its bullion coins directly to consumers. It distributes them through Authorized Purchasers, who supply a wider market that includes wholesalers and retail dealers. The Mint’s Authorized Purchasers page describes the distribution network; inclusion on the list indicates distribution status, not a government endorsement or a guarantee that a firm sells directly to consumers. The Mint’s published bulk-purchase premiums and minimum orders apply to Authorized Purchasers, not to individual retail buyers. Its premium structure can change, so check current Mint information rather than treating those figures as a consumer quote.

The Mint recommends researching dealers and reviewing its current Authorized Purchasers list. The CFTC and FINRA note that retail precious-metal dealers are not federally regulated and recommend checking reputation and complaints with consumer organizations or state authorities. Before committing, obtain the price, commissions, fees, delivery terms, and buyback quote in writing. Investigate a price far below current market value with extra care.

- Ask the dealer directly how much it would pay if you sold the metal back the next day.
- Clarify payment, shipping, delivery, return, and cancellation terms before sending money.
- For dealer or vault storage, establish what metal is being held, where it is held, who has legal title, what is insured, and how inspection, withdrawal, or delivery works.
How to check authenticity claims
For U.S. Mint bullion coins, compare the coin’s weight, diameter, and key features with the Mint’s published specifications. The Mint’s bullion investor education guidance also recommends asking whether a third party certifies the coin or the seller guarantees its weight and precious-metal content.

A visual glance, packaging, certificate, magnet, or single informal home test does not establish authenticity for every bullion product. The available official guidance does not provide one universal at-home test that authenticates all coins and bars. If you cannot verify an item through reliable specifications and seller documentation, have a reputable dealer or qualified coin professional examine it using appropriate methods.
Choose storage by cost, access, and coverage
Storage is both a practical choice and an ongoing cost. The U.S. Mint’s coin-care guidance recommends appropriate holders, cool and dry conditions, careful handling, and retaining documentation. It lists a bank safe-deposit box as one option and recommends checking whether home insurance covers the full replacement cost of a home collection. This care advice is not a comparative security rating of home storage versus bank storage.

The CFTC and FINRA identify storage and insurance charges as potential costs and warn that fraudulent sellers have charged customers for metal that did not exist. Get the storage arrangement and charges in writing; do not assume that a statement or account balance proves metal is held for you.

The CFTC and FINRA advisory gives particular attention to precious-metal sales involving self-directed IRAs. Storage, insurance, administrative charges, taxes, and penalties may apply, and retirement-account rules are complex.
