What MFIC stock represents
MidCap Financial Investment Corporation is an externally managed, publicly traded business development company (BDC). Its stated objective is to generate current income and, to a lesser extent, capital appreciation. The company says it primarily invests in senior secured first-lien loans originated by MidCap Financial for U.S. middle-market companies. Apollo Investment Management, L.P., an Apollo affiliate, is its adviser. MFIC has elected regulated investment company (RIC) tax treatment.

Buying MFIC means owning shares in a company whose results depend on a portfolio of middle-market investments—not placing a deposit or lending directly to a single borrower. BDC and RIC are structural and tax classifications, not guarantees of safety, income or a particular tax result for an individual investor.
How to buy MFIC shares
- Use a brokerage account or contact the transfer agent. MFIC says shares cannot be purchased directly from the company. Its FAQ identifies American Stock Transfer as its transfer agent and plan administrator. Check current procedures with the broker or transfer agent. MFIC shareholder FAQ.
- Confirm the security. Search for the exact ticker MFIC and verify that the result is MidCap Financial Investment Corporation common stock before proceeding.
- Choose an order with the broker’s guidance. Review the broker’s current order types, fees and account terms. Market and limit orders have different execution-price characteristics; the appropriate choice depends on your circumstances and the broker’s rules.
- Check dividend instructions if relevant. MFIC’s FAQ says common shareholders are automatically enrolled in its dividend reinvestment plan. It describes notifying American Stock Transfer in writing by the applicable record-date deadline to elect cash dividends. Confirm the current process and deadline with the transfer agent.
- Follow filings and results after purchase. Use the latest quarterly and annual reports, not just a dividend announcement or portfolio-yield figure, to monitor financial condition and risks.
MFIC’s latest verified snapshot in this article
The company’s August 6, 2026 results release reported the following measures. They are dated company disclosures, not current market-price data or forecasts; check for a newer filing before relying on them.
#1 Best Overall
| Measure | Reported figure and date | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Net asset value (NAV) | $13.37 per share at June 30, 2026 | Company-reported net asset value per common share; compare it with the share price on a matching date, while remembering that NAV includes estimated fair values. |
| Net leverage | 1.54x at June 30, 2026 | A dated measure of borrowing relative to the company’s net assets under its reporting definition. Leverage can magnify losses and financing costs affecting common equity. |
| Net investment income (NII) | $0.40 per share for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 | Quarterly income after expenses under the company’s reporting measure; compare with distributions over the same period, while accounting for timing and other factors. |
| First-lien secured debt | 94% of portfolio fair value at June 30, 2026 | Portfolio mix as reported by the company. A first-lien position does not eliminate borrower-default, recovery, valuation or concentration risk. |
| Weighted-average debt portfolio yield | 9.5% at June 30, 2026, at amortized cost and excluding non-accrual investments | This is a portfolio measure, not an investor’s return; the company cautions that investor yield may be lower after expenses. |
| Quarterly dividend | $0.31 per share declared August 5, 2026, payable September 24 to holders of record September 8, 2026 | The board sets distributions. The company said there could be no assurance it would continue the base dividend at that amount. |
| NAV movement | Down 3.2% during the second quarter of 2026 | The company attributed the decline to portfolio losses from credit weakness in a limited number of positions, partly offset by repurchases below NAV and NII above the dividend. |
These figures come from MFIC’s August 6, 2026 results release. They do not establish that the shares are attractively priced or suitable for a particular investor.
How to evaluate the investment beyond its dividend
Compare the share price with NAV
Compare the market price and NAV per share using dates as close together as possible. A price below NAV is a discount, not proof the shares are undervalued: reported NAV depends partly on estimated values for investments that may not trade in an active market. Conversely, a price above NAV does not by itself establish that the premium is justified.

Test income coverage, not just the headline yield
Portfolio yield is not the same as what a shareholder earns. It describes the company’s investments under stated assumptions; expenses, financing costs, changes in asset performance and share price all matter to investor outcomes. Compare NII and the declared distribution on a consistent per-share and time-period basis, and read the company’s explanation of any gap. A dividend can change, and MFIC explicitly gave no assurance that the $0.31 base amount declared in August 2026 would continue.
Look at leverage alongside credit quality
Borrowing can support investment income but also magnifies the effect of portfolio losses and higher funding costs on common shareholders. Interpret the 1.54x net leverage reported at June 30, 2026 alongside borrower conditions, non-accruals, concentration, maturities and the company’s financing terms—not as a stand-alone safety score.
Use comparable dates and definitions
If comparing MFIC with another BDC or an income investment, use a common reporting date and examine the same dimensions: price-to-NAV, leverage and debt maturities, credit quality and non-accruals, concentration, NII relative to distributions, rate sensitivity, funding costs, and management and incentive fees. MFIC’s reported measures provide starting points, but do not alone establish whether it is better or worse than an alternative.
Risks that can affect MFIC shareholders
Borrower credit and defaults
Middle-market borrowers can experience weaker finances, missed payments, restructurings or defaults. Those events can reduce interest income and investment values. For the second quarter of 2026, MFIC reported losses tied to credit weakness concentrated in a limited number of positions and a 3.2% decline in NAV.

Estimated investment values
MFIC’s June 2026 Form 10-Q explains that most investments do not have readily available market values. The adviser participates in a fair-value process, with independent valuation firms reviewing certain investments. Estimates may differ from prices in an active market or from amounts ultimately realized. Read the valuation discussion in the June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q.

Interest rates and funding costs
The same Form 10-Q describes rate exposure as arising from the difference between rates on investments and rates on borrowings. In a quarter-end scenario assuming no change in portfolio or borrowing structure, MFIC estimated that a 100-basis-point fall in base rates would reduce annual NII by $7.3 million, or $0.089 per share; a 100-basis-point rise was estimated to increase annual NII by $7.4 million, or $0.090 per share. These are issuer scenario estimates, not predictions of future earnings.
Best Value
Market price and principal loss
MFIC’s exchange-traded share price can move independently of reported NAV. Changes in investor demand, credit expectations and broader market conditions may affect the price, and investors can lose principal. The company’s investor warning states that share price and principal value fluctuate and shares may be worth more or less than their original cost.
Distribution changes and taxes
The board determines distributions; past or declared dividends do not guarantee future payments. Although MFIC has elected RIC treatment, an individual shareholder’s tax outcome depends on personal circumstances and applicable law. Consider tax advice specific to your situation rather than assuming a particular treatment.
