Choose how you want to buy and hold ETH

Wallet applications can manage Ethereum accounts on mobile, in a browser or extension, on desktop, or through a physical hardware device. A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline, but it does not protect you if you reveal your recovery phrase or approve a transaction without checking it. Ethereum.org’s wallet directory also says its listings are not endorsements.

- Choose a route available to you. Visit the provider’s verified official website or app directly. Confirm that it serves your country and accepts your intended payment method; terms and access can differ by location.
- Review the provider and account security. Read the current identity, payment, account-protection, and withdrawal requirements. Use a strong password and enable two-factor authentication if offered.
- Check the order preview before paying. Review the amount charged, quoted rate, any spread or purchase fee, and the amount of ETH you will receive. Check for a separate withdrawal charge if you plan to move ETH to a wallet.
- Decide where the ETH will be held. Leaving it on an exchange means the exchange retains custody. To self-custody, set up a wallet from its verified official source, secure its recovery phrase offline, and follow the provider’s withdrawal steps.
- Verify before signing or sending. Check the full destination address and transaction details on the device or screen used to approve the transfer. Consider a small test transfer when appropriate, while accounting for any fees on both transactions.
Understand the fees before confirming
There is no single fee that applies to every ETH purchase. Costs depend on provider, country, payment method, transaction size, and current terms. Wallet-directory listings include provider-specific examples such as variable fees and stated ranges; these details can change and should not be treated as a general price guide.

Distinguish a provider’s purchase or conversion charge from an Ethereum network fee. A provider’s trading fee alone may not show the full cost: compare the final ETH amount in the order preview and any charge to withdraw it. If you later send ETH on-chain, a network transaction fee may apply. Check the live quote and terms immediately before confirming.
Protect your wallet and avoid common scams
- Use the wallet’s verified official domain or app. Bookmark the site rather than following unsolicited links.
- Never disclose a password, private key, or recovery phrase to anyone, including someone claiming to be customer support. A legitimate support representative does not need your recovery phrase.
- Keep a self-custody recovery phrase offline and protected from loss, theft, and discovery. Avoid photos or screenshots that could sync to a cloud account.
- Read transaction details and verify the full destination address before approving. Ethereum transactions are final; Ethereum support cannot reverse a mistaken transfer.
- Be wary of giveaway promises, unsolicited support messages, and paid recovery offers. Ethereum.org says it is an educational website, not a wallet, exchange, or financial platform, and that no one from ethereum.org will contact users first.
What to compare before choosing
- Whether the service is available in your country and supports your payment method.
- Whether the provider holds custody or you control the wallet keys, and what account or wallet recovery involves.
- The live total cost: quoted rate, spread or purchase charge, ETH received, withdrawal charge, and any network fee for an on-chain transfer.
- Whether the wallet type and recovery responsibilities suit your comfort with managing keys and irreversible transactions.
No single exchange or wallet can be identified as the safest or cheapest for every reader without knowing their location, payment method, and current provider terms. Check those details directly before buying.
