Research any platform before depositing money, secure your account, and understand the trade-off between relying on a provider and managing your own wallet keys. No method removes Bitcoin’s volatility or guarantees against loss.
First decide what you want to buy
Buying Bitcoin directly means acquiring the cryptocurrency through a platform or wallet service and deciding how it will be held. A spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) is different: it can provide exposure to Bitcoin’s price without requiring you to transact directly on a crypto platform or manage wallet keys, but it carries its own investment-product risks as well as Bitcoin’s price risk. The SEC explains this distinction in its 2024 investor bulletin.

Bitcoin is highly speculative and its price can be volatile, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy cautions. A buying guide cannot make it a safe investment or promise a return. Consider your capacity for loss before deciding whether to invest.

Understand exchanges, wallets, and custody
A wallet does not contain Bitcoin in the way a physical wallet holds cash. The SEC’s retail custody bulletin explains: “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.” Those keys authorize access and transactions. Losing the keys can mean losing access to the Bitcoin.

| Choice | Who controls the keys? | Main trade-off | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party custody, such as leaving a balance with a platform | The provider manages access to the keys. | You avoid sole responsibility for key management, but depend on the provider’s security and continued operation. | Safeguarding practices, withdrawal access, provider failure procedures, insurance terms and exclusions, whether assets may be lent or commingled, privacy practices, and fees. |
| Self-custody | You control the private keys and recovery information. | You have direct control, but must protect the keys and recovery information yourself. Loss, theft, or exposure can put access at risk. | How you will securely store and recover the keys or seed phrase, and how you will protect them from disclosure, loss, and damage. |
Hot wallets are connected to the internet: they can be convenient, but are more exposed to cyberthreats. Cold wallets are typically physical devices and generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but they can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Neither is risk-free. A hardware wallet is optional for someone choosing self-custody, not a requirement for buying Bitcoin. These custody distinctions and risks are described in the SEC’s December 12, 2025 retail custody bulletin.
Research a provider before you fund an account
There is no universally suitable exchange, and availability, rules, fees, and account procedures depend on your country and the provider. Check current official information for your location rather than assuming a platform serves you or offers a particular protection.

- Background and status: Find out who operates the service, whether it is available in your jurisdiction, and what legal or regulatory status applies there.
- Asset safeguarding: Ask how the provider secures customer assets and keys, what happens if it fails, and whether customer assets may be lent or commingled.
- Insurance: Read the actual terms, limits, and exclusions. Do not treat an insurance claim in marketing as proof that every balance or loss is covered.
- Withdrawals: Confirm whether you can withdraw or transfer Bitcoin, what restrictions apply, and what fees or procedures are involved.
- Privacy: Review the provider’s privacy practices and the information it collects or shares.
- Fees: Look for transaction, transfer, setup, account-closure, and annual asset-based fees. These are categories to check, not quoted prices for any particular provider.
The SEC’s retail custody bulletin recommends investigating these kinds of custody, fee, and protection questions. A provider’s existence or claims do not by themselves establish how it is currently regulated or what protections apply to you.
Secure your account and recovery information
- Use a strong, unique password for the account and enable multi-factor authentication.
- Be alert to phishing messages and sign in through a trusted route rather than a link in an unexpected message.
- Never disclose a private key or seed phrase to anyone. A seed phrase can restore a wallet, so store it securely and separately from information that would make it easy for someone else to find or use.
- If you choose self-custody, understand how the wallet’s recovery process works before transferring Bitcoin to it.
Make the first purchase deliberately
- Choose direct Bitcoin or price exposure. If you want to hold Bitcoin itself, you will need a platform or wallet arrangement that supports direct purchase and custody. If you want price exposure without personally managing wallet keys, consider whether a spot bitcoin ETP is appropriate and understand its separate risks.
- Check local eligibility and procedures. Confirm that the provider or product is available where you live, what account verification is required, and what payment methods, minimums, and purchase limits apply. These details vary and are not universal.
- Review the costs and custody terms. Read current fee disclosures, withdrawal rules, asset-use terms, privacy information, and applicable protections before sending money.
- Secure access before funding. Set a unique password and multi-factor authentication; if using a wallet, learn its key and recovery process before relying on it.
- Buy only after checking the details. Confirm the asset or product, amount, total cost, and destination shown in the transaction flow before authorizing it.
- Keep records. Save confirmations and account statements, and check current government guidance in your jurisdiction for tax and recordkeeping obligations.
There is no single purchase screen, minimum, payment method, settlement time, or tax rule that applies everywhere. Use the provider’s current official instructions and government sources for your location.

Recognize a common Bitcoin scam pattern
Be especially cautious if someone you met online or through an app urges you to buy Bitcoin and send it to them as an investment deposit. The SEC warns that fraudsters may direct people to buy Bitcoin at an ATM or on a platform and then send it onward. Do not make investment decisions based on solicitations or advice from people you know only online. Never share a seed phrase or private key. See the SEC’s fraud warning on Bitcoin solicitations.
