Check that a provider serves your location and supports the exact asset, compare its full costs and withdrawal rules, secure your account, and understand how the asset will be held before you pay. How to buy Bitcoin, Ether, or XRP
The FTC lists exchanges, apps, websites, and cryptocurrency ATMs as ways to buy crypto. Which service and asset are available depends on location and can change. An app-store listing, search result, or referral from another person is not proof that a provider is legitimate.

Check the provider and your location
Research a provider independently, then navigate to its official website or verified app listing rather than relying on a link sent by a stranger. Confirm that it accepts residents of your location, supports the exact asset you want, and permits withdrawals of that asset. Do not assume XRP is available everywhere; check current support and withdrawal rules directly.

Compare the total cost and withdrawal terms
Check the cost of funding your account and buying, plus the fee and limits for withdrawing crypto. A displayed price may not show the full cost. Ask a custodian about transaction, transfer, annual asset-based, account setup, and account closure fees. Fees and terms vary by provider and can change, so review them before placing an order rather than relying on a static fee list. Secure the account before adding money
Use a unique, strong password and turn on multi-factor authentication. Never share your password, private keys, or seed/recovery phrase with anyone claiming to be support. A legitimate support interaction should not require you to disclose the keys that control your crypto.

Review the purchase before confirming
Check the asset name or ticker and the order details on screen before confirming. Make only a purchase you understand and can afford to lose; the regulator guidance cited here does not support a specific order type or recommended amount.

Choose how to hold the asset
You can leave it with a custodian or take self-custody using a wallet you control. Learn how access and recovery work before choosing. If you use a self-custody wallet, protect its keys and recovery phrase; losing them or sending to the wrong address may leave you without a way to regain access.

Compare providers without assuming one is the safest
The cited sources do not rank or validate specific exchanges. Compare providers using the factors that affect both purchase and access:
- Whether the service accepts customers in your location and supports the asset you want.
- Identity requirements, account protections, and a clear process for handling account problems.
- Funding, purchase, transaction, and withdrawal costs, including limits.
- Whether you can withdraw the actual crypto asset rather than only hold exposure through the provider.
- Who controls the private keys, and what happens if you lose access or the provider has problems.
- Whether you can securely manage the account or wallet setup you choose.
Custodial accounts and self-custody have different risks
A crypto wallet does not physically contain coins. The SEC explains that wallets store or manage the private keys—passcodes that control access to crypto assets. Hot wallets are generally more convenient for transactions than cold storage. Cold-wallet devices typically cost money; hot wallets may initially be free, although transactions can still incur fees. A hardware wallet is optional, not a requirement for a first purchase or a guarantee against loss. Choose a setup only if you can securely manage its keys and recovery process.
Recognize scam instructions before sending crypto
Stop if an online acquaintance, supposed adviser, self-described insider, or fake support representative asks you to buy crypto and send it to an address for safekeeping, investment, taxes, or account unlocking. Be especially wary of guaranteed profits, urgency, and claims that you must pay more to release supposed gains. Scammers may use fake websites or apps, display fabricated account growth, or permit a small withdrawal to build trust before demanding a larger deposit. The FTC explains common cryptocurrency scams.

Do not send crypto to an unsolicited contact or share a seed phrase or private key with anyone. Once sent, a crypto transfer may not be recoverable; a promise that someone can reverse it or release funds after another payment is not proof of legitimacy.
