To buy BHP or Codan shares on the Australian Securities Exchange, open an account with an ASX participant broker and search for the correct ticker: BHP for BHP Group or CDA for Codan. Choose the quantity and order price, submit the order, and arrange payment by the settlement deadline. The steps are similar for both companies; buying either share is an investment decision, not just an account setup task.
Confirm the company and ticker
Use the broker’s order screen to search for the security and confirm its name before placing an order. The ASX identifies BHP as ASX:BHP and Codan as ASX:CDA. For Codan, the ticker is CDA, not CODAN.

Check both the ticker and company name on the order ticket. Do not submit an order based on a ticker search alone if the security name does not match.

ASX shares are bought through an ASX participant broker. The ASX says buyers and sellers need a CHESS sponsoring broker. Compare brokers using the ASX broker directory; inclusion in the directory is not an endorsement.
#1 Best Overall
- Online, self-directed broker: You make the investment and order decisions. The service executes trades but does not advise whether a particular share is appropriate for you.
- Full-service broker or adviser: May offer recommendations and research, generally for a higher cost. Confirm exactly what advice and services are included.
Compare brokerage for each buy and sale, any platform or inactivity fees, supported markets and products, account and funding requirements, and how holdings and statements are handled. Fees and account terms can change, so check the broker’s current schedule and conditions rather than relying on an old comparison.
Open and fund the account
Follow the selected broker’s application process and complete any identity checks it requires. Account requirements and opening times differ by broker. Some brokers require an account before you can trade and may require a linked cash management account. Confirm how funds must be available for settlement before submitting an order.
Place a BHP or Codan order
- Sign in to the broker’s trading platform and open its share-trading or order-entry screen.
- Search for BHP or CDA, then verify the company name shown in the order ticket.
- Choose how many shares to buy and specify the order price or order type available on the platform. In a self-directed account, you decide these details.
- Review the order carefully, including ticker, quantity, price and estimated charges, then submit it.
- Check the order status. Submitting an order does not guarantee a trade: execution occurs only if it matches a suitable sell order in the market.
The ASX explains the order and matching process in its guide to buying and selling investments. An order that has not matched may remain unexecuted; consult your broker’s platform for options to amend or cancel it.

Pay for the shares and keep records
ASX guidance says payment is due within two days after execution, known as T+2. Confirm the settlement date, funding method and any instructions with your broker; settlement arrangements may depend on the account you opened.
Keep your trade confirmations and holding records. For CHESS-sponsored holdings, the ASX describes holding statements as records of transactions and holdings; issuer-sponsored holdings have their own statements. The ASX’s shareholder FAQ explains broker sponsorship and holding statements.

Brokerage may apply to each purchase or sale, and some platforms charge monthly or inactivity fees. Read the current fee schedule before you trade. ASIC’s Moneysmart guide, How to buy and sell shares, was last updated on 2 October 2026 and also explains that share prices can fall. If you sell for less than you paid, you may realise a loss.
This is a guide to placing an order, not a recommendation to buy BHP or Codan. The process alone does not establish whether either company suits your goals, timeframe, risk tolerance or financial circumstances. If you need a personal recommendation, consider speaking with an appropriately qualified adviser.
