1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor routine Old School RuneScape item deals, use the Grand Exchange when it fits the transaction. For a direct player trade, agree on the exact exchange first, keep it to one trade, and check the final trade screen before accepting. Cancel if the offer changes, the process becomes complicated, or someone pressures you to act. Jagex says Grand Exchange prices are guides—not guaranteed values—and advises players not to enter the Wilderness unless prepared to die.
Choose the Grand Exchange or a direct trade
The Grand Exchange is a practical choice for ordinary buying and selling when the item and transaction suit it. Confirm the item and quantity in the interface, and treat the displayed price as a guide rather than a promise that an item is worth that amount.

A direct player trade requires more care: you must verify the other player’s offer and the payment yourself. Jagex does not provide a quantitative comparison of the relative risk of the two methods. Whichever method you use, do not trade anything you are unwilling to lose.

How to complete a direct trade safely
- Agree on the exact deal. Confirm which item is changing hands, its quantity, and the payment before opening the trade.
- Keep the deal in one trade. Jagex’s advice is to “Complete all deals in one trade.” Do not split an exchange into stages based on promises of a later payment or return.
- Read the trade screens. Check the items and quantities shown, including on the final screen, before accepting. If anything differs from what you agreed, cancel.
- Stop if anything is unclear. Do not accept a revised offer or improvise a more complicated arrangement under pressure. Cancel and reassess instead.
Recognize common scam warning signs
Jagex warns about trade-window misuse, trust trading, offers that sound too good to be true, and scammers working together. A request to hop worlds repeatedly, use a particular item, follow someone, or perform several steps is a reason to pause—not a reason to rush through the deal.
#1 Best Overall
- Trust trading: A player asks you to hand over coins or valuable items on the promise they will return them later with a bonus, reward, or after a “test.” Decline; you would be relying on a promise rather than a completed exchange.
- Pressure or coordination: Multiple players, urgency, or repeated requests to move worlds can make it harder to assess the deal. Leave or cancel rather than letting the group control the pace.
- Unusually generous offers: If an offer seems too good to be true, do not let the apparent bargain distract you from checking exactly what is being offered.
Is the Grand Exchange price accurate?
Not necessarily. Jagex describes the displayed price as a guide, not a guaranteed value. Do not treat it as proof that an item is worth a particular amount when accepting it as payment or a loan. The guidance cited here does not establish current item prices or recommend a third-party pricing service.
Avoid being lured into dangerous areas
Do not enter the Wilderness unless you are prepared to die and potentially lose what you bring. Another player’s assurance that an area or trip is safe does not remove the risk. If a proposed deal requires following someone into a dangerous area and you are not prepared for that possible loss, refuse and leave.

Protect the account behind your items
Item safety also depends on preventing someone else from accessing your account. Jagex recommends these safeguards:
- Use a unique password and enable an authenticator.
- Secure the email account associated with RuneScape.
- Review linked accounts and remove any you do not recognize.
- Set a RuneScape Bank PIN to help protect bank items from access by someone who does not know it.
Be wary of messages asking for private information. Navigate to Jagex sites yourself rather than following unsolicited links, and do not enter your password on a page reached from a suspicious link. If a security email seems suspicious, log in directly to manage your account settings.

What to do if you are scammed
Report the player to Jagex and include evidence. Jagex says more evidence makes an investigation easier. Scamming is against in-game rules, and serious cases could result in a mute or ban; that enforcement possibility is not a guarantee that a victim’s items will be restored.

Old School Bonds are virtual items, not physical merchandise. Jagex says they can be traded directly between players or through the Grand Exchange for gold, and are tradeable only within Old School RuneScape. The same safeguards apply: inspect the offer, avoid trust-trading promises, and do not assume a displayed price guarantees value.
