A used PS5 game is safest to buy when you know exactly what is being sold, confirm your console can use it, and have clear written terms if it does not work. A physical disc is different from a digital purchase or someone else’s account: check the exact game and console model, inspect the disc and seller’s description, and never hand over your PlayStation sign-in details.
First, confirm what “used PS5 game” means
Check whether the listing is for a physical game disc, a digital code, or access to a PlayStation account or library. These are not interchangeable. A used physical disc is an item you can inspect; digital purchases are associated with account access and governed by PlayStation Store terms. Do not buy a stranger’s account or share your credentials to obtain a game.

Sony warns users not to share account details and says account sharing compromises security and violates its Terms of Service. The US PlayStation Terms describe Store content as a personal-use license; closing an account may mean losing access to purchased content. That is different from buying a pre-owned disc.

Check that the disc and your PS5 are compatible
Before arranging payment, identify your console’s exact model and disc-drive setup. A disc-based game requires a compatible, working drive. Do not assume that a console described simply as “PS5” has one. If your console is a Digital Edition or uses a separate drive arrangement, check support for that exact hardware revision and setup before buying. The available Sony guidance specifically says PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition; it does not establish support for every later console revision or drive configuration.
Also verify the exact game title and edition. Similar names can refer to different releases, editions, or platforms. This helps avoid a basic mismatch, such as ordering a different platform’s release because the listing title is abbreviated. The label and case can clarify what is offered, but they do not prove that the disc works or that every listed extra is included.
Compare listings on evidence, not just price
Use the same checks for each candidate listing. A lower asking price is not necessarily a better purchase if the edition is unclear, the condition is poorly described, shipping or fees change the total, or the seller will not explain what happens if the disc is unreadable. No universal used-game return policy applies across all merchants, marketplaces, sellers, or jurisdictions, so review the actual terms before paying.

When you compare two offers, keep the same five points in view: exact title and edition, format, condition and evidence, seller reputation and written remedies, and total cost after shipping or fees. Photos and videos have limits. A clear picture can help identify a case, label, or visible disc condition, but a photo cannot establish that the disc will read in your console. If the seller demonstrates a game working, treat that as evidence about that moment, not a substitute for an accurate condition description or a return policy. Ask what is included, whether the seller knows of read problems, and what remedy they offer if the item does not match the listing.
Before you pay: a safe buying checklist
- Confirm the item. Ask whether the seller is offering the physical disc itself. Do not treat a code, login, or shared library as a disc.
- Check console compatibility. Confirm your exact PS5 model and drive can read the format, and check compatibility for the exact title rather than inferring it from the listing headline.
- Read the condition and contents. Ask what is included and whether the seller knows of damage or read errors. Request clear images of the disc’s label and playable surface if the listing does not show them.
- Review seller feedback. Look at ratings and comments, not just the seller’s own description. Be cautious if the seller avoids basic questions or pressures you to pay outside the marketplace’s stated process.

Sony’s account-security guidance also warns against unexpected direct messages asking for account information. A legitimate used-disc transaction should not require you to give the seller your PlayStation password or sign in to the seller’s account.
For an online purchase, save the listing and the seller’s answers about condition, included items, and returns. For an in-person purchase, agree on those points before handing over payment. The right process depends on the platform and local rules; Sony’s seller-reputation advice does not create one standard guarantee or return window for every used game. Check the actual seller’s terms and any marketplace protections that apply to the specific transaction.
Be cautious with unusually cheap offers and with links or QR codes that arrive unexpectedly. Hardware checks are separate from checking a game disc. Sony’s used-product guidance is aimed primarily at PlayStation products such as consoles, so apply its console checks to the hardware in a bundle rather than treating every item as a disc inspection.
Ask for a function video
Sony suggests asking for video proof of relevant functions. For a console bundle, ask for a short video showing the system powering on, connecting to the internet when relevant, and testing the ports, buttons, and disc drive where applicable. A video can demonstrate functions at that moment, but it does not replace checking the item in person or establishing the seller’s written terms.
Make the request specific to what you are buying: if the bundle includes a console with a disc drive, ask the seller to show that drive operating; if you need online services, ask for evidence that the console connects. Sony’s suggested checks concern the hardware. They do not prove the condition of a separate game disc, so inspect the disc and clarify its condition independently.

Inspect the console in person
Recheck the functions shown in the video. Sony advises looking for image-quality problems, overheating, signs of damage, broken seals, and removed serial numbers. Ports, buttons, overheating, and serial numbers concern the console, not the game disc; inspect the disc separately for visible condition and test whether it reads when possible.
Use the video as a starting point, not the whole inspection. A video may show that the console powered on for the seller, but it cannot establish every aspect of condition or replace checking the console yourself where possible. Sony’s guidance names image quality, overheating, visible damage, broken seals, and removed serial numbers as things to inspect. Do not apply console-specific checks such as overheating or port operation to a game disc; for the disc, focus on its identity, visible condition, and whether it reads in a compatible drive.
Check service access and previous-owner access
If you are buying a used console and need online services, verify that it connects and can access PlayStation services. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from those services. Sony also advises confirming that the seller has deactivated a used console and no longer has access to it. Do not use the previous owner’s account; sign in with your own credentials and keep them private.
These account and service checks matter most when the purchase includes hardware, not when you are simply buying a disc. A console that powers on may still present a separate problem with access to online services. Confirm its status before paying if you depend on those services, and do not treat a previous owner’s successful sign-in as something you should continue using. Sony’s warning is that a device reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services; the seller should be able to clarify the console’s status and deactivation.

These cited Sony steps concern PS4 discs played on PS5. Do not assume they establish every detail for every PS5 disc, console revision, or drive configuration; check the support information for your exact setup.
A used disc does not become a digital purchase when the game installs or updates. For the PS4-disc instructions Sony describes, keep the disc inserted each time you play. Buying a disc therefore means you need access to a compatible working disc drive, not merely storage space or an internet connection. Separate the disc’s job from the update’s job: Sony’s instructions say to insert the disc, choose the game hub, download any needed update, and leave the disc inserted for play. The presence of an update does not remove the cited disc requirement. If the listing or seller suggests that a disc will give you a transferable digital license or account entitlement, verify what is actually included rather than relying on that description.
If the console does not read the disc
A read failure can come from the disc or the console. Sony’s basic troubleshooting sequence helps separate those possibilities; it is not a promise that cleaning will repair scratches or physical damage.

Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. A burned disc or unsupported format should not be treated as a faulty retail game disc. On July 1, 2026, Sid Shuman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Senior Director of Content Communications, wrote on PlayStation.Blog: “Physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony said the change does not affect games already released, or games that release before January 2028, in disc format.
This announcement is about production of new physical releases beginning on that date. It does not establish how many used copies will be available, how their prices may change, or whether a particular title will remain easy to find. Treat the policy as a reason to check the individual listing and compatibility, not as a guarantee of future scarcity, value, or supply.

The date is a policy change announced by Sony, not a forecast for any one used game. Sony’s statement preserves the distinction between future production of new physical releases and games already released, or released before January 2028, in disc format. It does not promise a specific quantity of second-hand copies, a price direction, or continued availability of a particular title. Make the buying decision from the actual listing, the seller’s terms, the condition evidence, and your console’s compatibility.
