To buy a self-managed VPS for a LEMP website, choose a Linux virtual machine sized for your workload, decide whether you want a preinstalled LEMP image or a plain operating-system image, and compare providers’ current plans and terms. The purchase gives you virtual server resources; unless you separately buy management services, you remain responsible for configuring, securing, updating, backing up, and monitoring the server.
What you are buying
A VPS is a virtual machine with allocated CPU, memory, storage, and an operating-system image. “Self-managed” describes who handles ongoing administration: you, rather than the host, maintain the operating system and applications, manage access, configure services, monitor the server, and plan recovery.

LEMP commonly refers to Linux, NGINX, a MySQL-compatible database, and PHP. A LEMP image can install the core stack for you, but it does not necessarily configure your particular site or make the server production-ready.
Choose a LEMP image or install the stack yourself
One example is DigitalOcean’s LEMP Marketplace image, which its documentation describes as installing NGINX, MySQL, and PHP-FPM on Ubuntu Linux 24.04. The page does not state exact NGINX, MySQL, or PHP versions in the retrieved content, so check the image details at deployment and confirm that its packages suit your application. #1 Best Overall
| Choice | What it gives you | What remains to do |
|---|---|---|
| LEMP image | Core stack components are installed as part of deployment. DigitalOcean’s example uses Ubuntu 24.04 with NGINX, MySQL, and PHP-FPM. | Check package versions and application compatibility, then configure the site, domain, security, backups, and maintenance. |
| Plain Linux image | A clean operating-system starting point and more control over how the stack is installed. | Install and configure NGINX, a MySQL-compatible database, and PHP yourself, in addition to ongoing server administration. |
Compare plans against your workload
Do not select a server size solely because it is the provider’s smallest or most popular plan. An oversized server costs more while resources go unused; an undersized one can suffer degraded performance or errors. Estimate the needs of your application and allow for growth, then revisit sizing as you observe real usage.
CPU plan types can also matter. DigitalOcean describes shared CPU plans as suited to bursty or variable workloads, while its dedicated CPU plans guarantee access to the full hyper-thread; shared CPU access can vary with host-neighbor load. These are DigitalOcean’s descriptions, not a universal performance ranking. Compare the equivalent definitions and guarantees from any provider you consider. DigitalOcean CPU plan guidance

- Compare vCPU count and type, memory, and boot and data storage.
- Check storage type and capacity, bandwidth allowance, and the regions where the plan is offered.
- Confirm whether the Linux image or LEMP template you want is available in your chosen region.
- Review backup availability and cost, how restoration works, and what support covers.
- Check scaling and migration options, billing basis, and any management services included.
Compare current prices and terms directly with providers; the available documentation does not establish a cheapest provider, a best region, or a suitable size for an unspecified workload. DigitalOcean’s Droplet creation guidance says configuration choices show hourly pricing and describes per-second billing at an hourly rate without a monthly usage cap for its v5 Droplets. Those are product-specific details that can change, so verify the current terms for the exact plan before ordering. DigitalOcean Droplet creation guidance

Creating the VPS is only the start of deployment. For a production setup, DigitalOcean recommends SSH key authentication for a sudo non-root user, disabling password-based root access, restricting SSH with a cloud firewall, enabling automatic backups, and monitoring resource use. These are provider recommendations, not a complete security guarantee. DigitalOcean production setup recommendations
Rank #3
- Secure access: Create a sudo non-root user, use SSH key authentication, and disable password-based root access as appropriate for the provider’s image and setup instructions.
- Restrict network exposure: Configure the provider’s cloud firewall to allow only the services you intend to expose; limit SSH access rather than leaving it broadly open.
- Plan recovery and maintenance: Set up backups and test that you can restore them. Maintain an update plan, use supported software versions, and monitor resource use.
- Configure the website: Set up a separate NGINX server block for each site, configure its web root and domain, and create the required DNS records. DigitalOcean’s deployment guidance describes using a DNS A record to point a domain at the Droplet.
- Enable HTTPS: DigitalOcean says Certbot is installed with its LEMP image to help enable HTTPS once the domain points to the Droplet and NGINX is configured. Verify the certificate and renewal setup for your deployed site.
Exact application requirements vary, so validate the PHP and database needs of your own site and avoid exposing services it does not need. A newly created instance, even one using a LEMP image, is not by itself a finished public website.
