Start with what your home can support: measure the space and delivery route, identify the electrical or gas hookup, and determine whether the dryer can vent outdoors. Then compare dryer type, capacity, energy use, moisture sensing, and total cost against your laundry routine. The right choice is the model that fits your installation and needs—not a universal “best” brand.
1. Check fit, hookups, and venting first
Before comparing features, establish which dryers can actually be installed in your home. Measure the available space, including required clearances, and check the route through doors, hallways, and stairways. Account for the dryer door’s swing and how you will reach the lint filter and controls.

Next, identify the existing connection. A replacement dryer may not use the same fuel or electrical connection as the old one. Check the outlet and circuit details, or whether a gas connection is present, and compare them with the installation manual for the exact model. DOE defines electric and gas dryers as tumble-drum appliances with forced air circulation; the heat source distinguishes the two categories. DOE’s clothes dryer standards page provides the definitions and related standards information.

2. Choose a dryer design that suits the home
Conventional electric, gas, and electric heat-pump dryers differ in heat source, installation needs, and energy use. Start by eliminating types that do not match your available connection or venting arrangement. Among the remaining options, weigh purchase and installation costs against how often you dry laundry and how important energy use is.
Conventional electric and gas
These use different heat sources, so compatibility with your home’s connections matters. Verify the exact model’s power or gas requirements and venting instructions rather than assuming a new dryer will connect like the old one.

Electric heat-pump dryers
A heat-pump design is worth considering if lower energy use is a priority and its purchase price and installation requirements work for your household. DOE says ENERGY STAR-certified heat-pump dryers can save 20–60% more energy than conventional clothes dryers; actual savings depend on the model and how it is used. DOE’s clothes dryer guidance gives this comparison.
Heat-pump technology also has a practical moisture-disposal advantage over conventional electric dryers, according to DOE’s description of an Oak Ridge National Laboratory project. That project page discusses higher initial cost, possible lower capacity, and longer cycle time as challenges in that research context, not universal traits of every heat-pump model available today. Its estimate that a heat-pump dryer could lower energy use by 60% compared with conventional resistance heaters is likewise a project estimate, not a guarantee for current products. Read DOE’s project description for its scope.

3. Match capacity and cycles to your laundry routine
Think about the loads you actually dry: how often you do laundry, whether you regularly dry bulky items, and whether you need clothes ready on a tight schedule. Compare usable capacity and cycle options in the specifications for each exact model. There is no single capacity target established for every household, and category labels alone do not establish a model’s drying speed.
If cycle time matters, consult current, credible reviews or model-level testing for the specific dryers you are considering. A feature list or advertised cycle name is not a substitute for evidence about how long your typical load takes.

4. Prioritize useful controls and moisture sensing
A moisture sensor is one of the most useful features to look for. DOE recommends choosing a dryer that stops when clothes are dry; this can avoid unnecessary energy use and reduce over-drying wear. Confirm that the exact model has automatic moisture sensing rather than relying on a general description of the product line. DOE’s dryer guidance explains the recommendation.

5. Compare energy information and estimate total cost
ENERGY STAR certification is a useful efficiency screen, not a promise of a particular bill reduction. DOE says ENERGY STAR clothes dryers use 20% less energy than conventional models, and gives the separate 20–60% comparison for ENERGY STAR-certified heat-pump dryers noted above. Those figures are DOE comparisons; your actual energy use and savings depend on the model and household use. Check the certification and model-specific energy information for the dryer you plan to buy.
Compare the full cost of ownership, not just the sticker price. Include the dryer’s purchase price, delivery and installation, expected operating costs, warranty, and any incentive you can confirm you qualify for. A more efficient model can make sense over time, but the answer depends on its price, your laundry habits, and the local cost of energy.
6. Check rebates and purchase terms before committing
DOE lists potential rebates of up to $840 for qualifying ENERGY STAR-certified electric heat-pump dryers through the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate program. It also lists potential project-based rebates of up to $8,000 through the Home Owner Managing Energy Savings program; that amount is not necessarily a stand-alone dryer rebate. These are program maximums, not guaranteed discounts. Availability, funding, location, and eligibility matter, so check with the current state or local program administrator before counting a rebate toward your budget. DOE’s dryer guidance outlines these potential incentives.

Before placing an order, verify the seller’s return policy, warranty, delivery access requirements, and installation terms. Confirm who handles any required connection or vent work and whether that service is included.
7. Verify model and standards details
For the exact model, use the current manufacturer installation manual and specifications to confirm dimensions, clearances, hookup, venting, capacity, and features. DOE’s consumer page says compliance with the amended clothes dryer standards is required on March 1, 2028. DOE’s July 2, 2026 announcement concerns a proposed process-rule revision for appliance standards; it does not itself announce a final dryer-specific change to that compliance date. Check DOE’s standards page and the proposal announcement for current status.
