For a straightforward batch, send one POST request to Browserless’s /screenshot endpoint for each URL, save each binary response to its own file, and limit the number of requests running at once. Use a remote Playwright session instead when a page needs scripted interaction or more control before capture.

These are workflow choices, not a claim that one method is universally faster. Both consume service capacity. Browserless says each parallel Playwright test worker opens a session that counts against the plan’s concurrency limit; the exact capacity depends on the plan, so check the current account documentation or dashboard rather than hard-coding a limit. Keep concurrency low enough to avoid overwhelming destination sites.

Bulk capture with the REST screenshot endpoint
Keep the URLs in a list and issue one POST request per entry. The endpoint takes the account token in the query string and JSON with the URL and screenshot options; Browserless returns image bytes. The documentation demonstrates PNG and lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Store the token in an environment variable or secret store, not in source control.

This example uses Node.js 18 or later, which provides the built-in fetch API. Set BROWSERLESS_TOKEN in the environment, then run the script. It processes a limited number of URLs at once, saves successful responses with distinct filenames, and reports failures per URL.

The example uses the production SFO endpoint form; endpoint availability can vary by account configuration.
Batch behavior and output handling
- Use a stable index or a sanitized hostname plus index in filenames. URLs can contain characters unsuitable for paths, and multiple URLs may share a hostname.
- Write a per-URL result record—success, output path, HTTP status, or error—so a long run can be resumed without repeating successful captures.
- For a large list, process in controlled chunks. Do not launch every request simultaneously.
- Do not assume an HTTP success means the intended page rendered; inspect representative images and classify blank or blocked results separately.
Use Playwright when the page needs interaction
Connect to Browserless’s Playwright-compatible remote browser endpoint, navigate with Playwright, wait for the content you need, capture with Playwright’s screenshot method, and save the bytes. Use the Playwright endpoint and connection method documented for Playwright; Browserless’s default endpoint speaks CDP, and not every Playwright protocol connection method is interchangeable with it.

The endpoint shape and connection details are account- and integration-sensitive, so use Browserless’s current connection guide and Playwright guide for the exact WebSocket URL and authentication format. The following shows the batch structure; supply the documented Playwright WebSocket endpoint through BROWSERLESS_PLAYWRIGHT_WS.

}Creating a fresh page per URL provides isolation between captures; reusing a page may be appropriate if you deliberately need shared browser state. For higher throughput, parallelize with a bounded worker pool and account for each concurrent worker’s session use.

Set capture scope and page readiness
Viewport or full page
A viewport screenshot captures what is visible at the current viewport; it is smaller and usually quicker. Full-page mode includes content beyond the visible viewport. For long pages with lazy-loaded material, Browserless notes that it may be necessary to scroll first and use scrollPage: true together with full-page mode. Confirm the exact option names for your request in the current API documentation.
Wait for the page you need
Readiness is site-specific. A fixed delay can work for a known animation or delayed widget, but waiting for a meaningful selector or event is generally more robust. If the capture depends on a particular element, wait for that element rather than treating navigation completion as proof the page is ready.

Choose only the options your output needs. For a single component, selector capture avoids saving unrelated page content; for consistent visual comparisons, keep viewport and scale settings identical across URLs.

- Concurrency: use a semaphore or fixed worker pool. Respect the capacity shown for your plan and the target site’s tolerance; the documentation does not establish one universal concurrency number.
- Failures: record URL-level outcomes and retry only transient failures with a bounded retry count and delay. Do not retry indefinitely or treat a CAPTCHA as a transient network error.
- Capacity: each independent REST request or remote browser session uses service capacity. A Playwright test worker consumes a session under Browserless’s concurrency model.
- Performance: bounded parallel requests can reduce the elapsed time for a batch compared with serial work, but actual throughput depends on page load time, Browserless capacity, and destination behavior. No general throughput or success-rate figure is established.
- Cost: plan usage and concurrent-session allowances are account-specific and can change. Check the current plan information in your Browserless account before setting batch size or scheduling recurring jobs.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect screenshots
- HTTP error or rejected request: check the token, endpoint, request method, JSON content type, and request body against the current Browserless screenshot API documentation.
- File is empty or not an image: check that your client reads the response as bytes rather than JSON or text, and log the HTTP status and response body for non-success responses.
- White or blank image: the target may not have rendered, or may be blocking automation. Check the page manually and try an appropriate readiness condition; do not assume Browserless can bypass a block.
- CAPTCHA or access-denied page: treat it as a blocked capture, not a successful screenshot of the intended content. Browserless’s troubleshooting material identifies these as signs that automation may be blocked.
- Missing content or element: verify the selector and wait condition, and allow for site-specific rendering. Lazy-loaded content may require scrolling before full-page capture.
- Batch stalls or overloads the site: reduce the worker count, process smaller chunks, and add bounded retries only for transient failures.
- Playwright connection fails: verify that you are using the Browserless Playwright endpoint and its required connection method, rather than assuming the default CDP endpoint accepts the same protocol connection.
