For browser-driven captures and portable replay packages, Browsertrix is another option. Neither is a substitute for the Internet Archive’s scale, and no capture method guarantees that every resource or interactive behavior will survive.
Start with a small set of URLs, save them, and verify that the resulting files replay as you expect. The right setup depends on whether you need a readable static copy, a record of web transactions, or a closer reproduction of an interactive page.

What a personal web archive can—and cannot—preserve
A personal archive is a collection of dated captures you control. Depending on the capture method, a saved page may include rendered HTML, images, stylesheets, a screenshot, a PDF, or web crawl data. Those outputs are not interchangeable: a screenshot is easy to view but not interactive, while a browser-based capture may preserve more context but still miss content that requires a login, a click, or a live service.

ArchiveBox describes multiple output formats, including HTML, SingleFile, screenshots, PDF, WARC, and extracted content. Its documentation says that only its wget and DOM capture methods execute archived JavaScript when viewed; other methods produce static output. Check the current project documentation for the exact behavior and configuration of the version you install: ArchiveBox on GitHub and ArchiveBox.

Browsertrix captures through a real browser and supports archived items that can be exported or imported as WACZ. Its documentation notes that complex social-media sites can be difficult to archive. Logins, personalized pages, dynamic feeds, bot defenses, and content revealed only after interaction are sensible cases to test, not guaranteed capture failures: Browsertrix user guide and Browsertrix.
Choose a capture approach before installing
Use ArchiveBox for a personal collection with varied outputs
ArchiveBox is designed for self-hosted archiving. Its project materials describe URL imports, scheduled sources such as bookmarks and browsing history, and access through a CLI, web UI, REST API, webhooks, browser extension, and filesystem. It recommends a Docker Compose quickstart on its homepage. Because installation commands and supported versions can change, follow the current instructions at archivebox.io rather than relying on copied commands from an older guide.
Choose the output formats that match your purpose. HTML or SingleFile may be convenient for reading; screenshots and PDFs are fixed visual records; WARC is useful when you want to retain web crawl transactions. ArchiveBox’s repository lists these and other outputs, but the available capture methods and their results depend on current configuration.

Consider Browsertrix for browser-driven capture and replay
Browsertrix provides a real-browser workflow for capturing web pages. Its archived items can be exported or imported as WACZ, a package that combines WARC files with context information and a page index. The documentation names ReplayWeb.page as a browser-based viewer for replaying archived material. Review the current Browsertrix documentation for setup and workflow details.
Know the difference between WARC and WACZ
- WARC: a format for storing web crawl transactions.
- WACZ: a package that can include WARC data, descriptive context, and a page index to support portable, contextualized replay.
Prefer a package and viewer that suit how you intend to transfer and revisit captures. A file existing on disk is not proof that it replays correctly.
Build a small ArchiveBox collection
- Define the scope. Begin with a handful of pages or a bookmark list. Decide whether you need occasional saves, recurring imports, or whole-site crawling. Scheduled or broader collection increases storage use and maintenance, so begin narrowly.
- Install using the current quickstart. Follow the Docker Compose instructions on ArchiveBox’s homepage. The project describes other installation routes, including Docker and Python tooling, but the current installation page should determine which method and commands apply to your system.
- Keep the archive data persistent. Store application data on storage you control, not only in a temporary container. ArchiveBox documents local and remote storage options, including S3/B2 and network storage; consult its repository for current details. There is no universal disk-size estimate: measure how quickly your own captures and retained media consume space.
- Add representative URLs. Use the interface or import method supported by your installation to add a small sample: a mostly static article, a page with images, and a page with dynamic content if those matter to your collection. ArchiveBox documents one-at-a-time URL input and scheduled imports from sources such as bookmarks, history, and feeds.
- Inspect the outputs. Open the saved page or artifact and compare it with the live page. Check images, styles, links, and any interactive controls you care about. Try more than one capture format if the first does not meet your needs.
- Set up organization and backup. Preserve capture dates and useful descriptive metadata. Keep an independent backup of the archive, and periodically verify that files remain readable. Self-hosting gives you control of the collection, but does not itself guarantee long-term preservation.
Capture fidelity: select the right artifact
| Need | Useful capture to consider | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A quick visual record | Screenshot or PDF | These are static views, not working copies of the page. |
| Readable saved content | HTML or SingleFile | External resources and page behavior may not be retained; test the saved result. |
| Web crawl transactions | WARC | Replaying it depends on compatible tooling and what was captured. |
| Portable capture with replay context | WACZ | Use a compatible viewer, such as ReplayWeb.page, and verify the replay. |
| Some archived JavaScript behavior in ArchiveBox | Its wget or DOM capture methods | ArchiveBox says its other capture methods produce static output when viewed. |
Before relying on a capture, test the exact kind of page you expect to archive. Verify that the files are present, the page opens through your intended viewer, and the details important to you—such as an image, a link, or a visible interaction—are actually available.

Storage, privacy, and maintenance
Estimate storage from your own collection
Storage needs depend on capture frequency, page complexity, retained media, and how long you keep old captures. Start with a small representative sample, note how much space it uses, and use that rate to inform your retention plan. Existing storage may be sufficient; an external drive is optional, not a required purchase.
Keep a separate backup
Maintain a copy separate from the machine running the archive if the collection matters to you. Periodically check that the backup can be read and that representative pages still replay. A self-hosted, file-based collection needs ongoing care; no particular product guarantees decades of preservation.
Review access before exposing the service
If you make an archive reachable over a network, decide deliberately who can view it and who can add URLs. ArchiveBox’s repository includes configuration related to public visibility, URL adding, and SSL checking. Review the current security documentation and settings before making an instance public; do not expose the archive or its add interface by default.

For a screenshot rather than a self-hosted archive, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. A screenshot is a visual record, not a WARC or WACZ archive, and does not provide the archive organization and replay workflow described above.
Example using cURL; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include page-verdict and billing headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting a personal archive
The capture looks incomplete
Try another output or capture method and compare the results. A static artifact may not retain interactive behavior, and dynamic or complex pages may not be fully captured. For Browsertrix, the project specifically cautions that complex social-media sites can be difficult to archive. Test the page while it is still available rather than assuming a successful capture preserved every dependency.
The saved page does not replay
Confirm that you are opening the capture with a viewer compatible with its format. For WACZ, use a compatible replay tool such as ReplayWeb.page. For ArchiveBox, remember that only the wget and DOM methods are documented as executing archived JavaScript during viewing; other methods produce static output.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The archive disappears after a restart
Check that the application’s data directory is stored persistently rather than only inside an ephemeral container. Verify the configured storage location and make sure backups include the data you expect to retain.
A public archive or add interface is exposed unexpectedly
Review ArchiveBox’s current visibility and URL-add settings, along with its security guidance. Restrict access deliberately and verify the result from a separate browser or account before sharing the service.
Frequently asked questions
Can a self-hosted archive replace the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine?
No. A personal archive covers the pages and dates you capture; it does not reproduce the Internet Archive’s breadth or collection scale.
Should I archive individual pages or crawl entire sites?
For a personal collection, begin with selected URLs or bookmarks. Broader crawling and scheduled collection can consume more storage and require more maintenance, so expand only when you have a clear need.
