Build social media buttons as ordinary, named links first; then use CSS to give them consistent dimensions, alignment, color, and restrained hover and focus states. The example below uses Font Awesome icons as visual content, but the same button styling can work with other icon assets.
1. Add the icons and give each link an accessible name
Make each destination a real link with its own URL and an accessible name. The icon is decorative in this pattern: aria-hidden="true" keeps the glyph from being announced as extra content, while aria-label supplies the link name. This matters because an icon-font glyph by itself may have no readable text or may be announced as a confusing Unicode equivalent. Font Awesome discusses these accessibility concerns in its accessibility guidance.

Font Awesome’s documented approach is to add an HTML element with the relevant family/style and icon-name classes. Load the appropriate Font Awesome asset for your project, and use the class names supported by that version. This example assumes the Brands styles and the shown brand icons are available:

2. Create consistent button geometry
Use one shared class for every button so the icons sit in equally sized, centered targets. A subtle border, background, and shadow create depth without competing with the page. Font Awesome notes that its icons inherit CSS size and color, and documents styling them with ordinary CSS in its styling basics and customization documentation.
.social-links {
display: flex;
flex-wrap: wrap;

}
.social-button {

The dimensions, gap, colors, radius, and motion above are design choices, not universal requirements. Adjust them to match the surrounding interface, while keeping the same geometry across the set. The focus outline is a separate keyboard state; do not remove it without providing a clear visible replacement.

3. Tune the visual style without sacrificing clarity
- Keep the silhouette coherent. Use the same dimensions, corner treatment, and spacing even when the individual logo shapes differ.
- Use contrast deliberately. Choose icon, surface, and border colors that remain distinguishable against the page background in both default and interactive states.
- Keep effects restrained. A small hover lift or shadow can signal interaction; it should not be the only indication that the item is a link.
- Preserve keyboard feedback. Test navigation with the keyboard and confirm the focused button is obvious. The sample uses
:focus-visibleso the focus treatment is visible when keyboard navigation needs it. - Check the actual assets and terms. Icon availability and usage terms depend on the asset and product offering. Font Awesome states that its v7 Duotone styles require an active Pro-level plan or an applicable Pro license; verify the terms for the specific asset you choose in its Duotone documentation.
4. Use pseudo-elements only when the markup cannot change
For normal page components, an icon element inside the link is easier to inspect and maintain. Font Awesome also documents CSS pseudo-element icons, but describes that route as more complicated and more prone to errors than standard markup. If you must use it, follow the library’s implementation and accessibility requirements rather than inventing a glyph value or assuming the generated content names the link. See Font Awesome’s pseudo-element guidance.

5. Check the finished buttons
- Replace every sample URL and confirm each link reaches the intended social profile.
- Confirm the icon asset is loaded and that each class matches the library version and asset package in use.
- Navigate through the links with a keyboard and verify the focus outline is visible.
- Check that each link has a meaningful accessible name, and that the decorative icon is not announced as an extra name.
- Inspect the set at the sizes and backgrounds where it will appear; adjust contrast and spacing if the buttons blend into the page or crowd nearby content.
