Choose the media architecture around how quickly viewers must respond, then synchronize application features to playback without confusing video delivery with payment or order processing.
What makes a live stream interactive?
A live video experience is more than a camera feed. It combines media delivery with application features that let people communicate, participate, or act while watching. Those features can include chat, polls, audience participation, product cards, and calls to action.

Keep the responsibilities distinct. The streaming service transports audio and video; the application defines who can participate, what a poll means, how messages are moderated, and what happens when someone selects a product. Amazon Web Services (AWS) documents these as separate capabilities for Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS): stage media publishing and subscribing, chat, and timed metadata each have their own role.

How should the system be structured?
Think of the product as four cooperating layers. A design decision in one layer affects the others: for example, the delivery mode determines whether the audience can respond in near real time or primarily watches and interacts through application features.

1. Capture and ingest
A host’s browser or device captures camera, microphone, or screen media and publishes it to a streaming endpoint. For browser-based real-time participation, the IVS web broadcast SDK supports joining a stage and publishing or subscribing to participant media. That is a different role from simply watching a delivered channel stream.
2. Processing and delivery
The media service processes and distributes the stream to viewers. Select a delivery path based on latency needs, expected reach, playback support, and operational requirements. IVS distinguishes real-time stages from low-latency channels. Separately, YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance describes HLS as a fit for premium, high-quality or high-resolution delivery where relatively higher latency is acceptable, and specifies playlist and media requirements for that ingest path.
3. Application interaction
Your application owns the interaction model: user identity, permissions, chat behavior, moderation, polls, and the state that determines what each control does. IVS provides chat APIs, while its timed metadata APIs can send synchronized triggers for items such as graphics or polls. A trigger can tell the application when to show an element; it does not define the poll’s rules or maintain its authoritative results.

4. Monetization and measurement
A synchronized product card or promotional prompt can connect a moment in the stream to a commerce action. AWS describes synchronized promotional elements as a live-video use case, and its retail architecture presents product data alongside live video and chat. The overlay is only the presentation and timing layer. Product catalog data, authorization, order handling, payment processing, fulfillment, and measurement belong to separate application and backend systems.
How low does latency need to be?
Latency is a product requirement, not a contest to reach the smallest number. AWS’s IVS Low-Latency Streaming documentation describes low-latency channel delivery as under five seconds and real-time stage delivery as under 300 milliseconds. These are service-documented capabilities, not end-to-end guarantees for every viewer or deployment.
| Mode | AWS-documented latency | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| IVS low-latency channel | Under 5 seconds, as stated in AWS IVS documentation accessed in 2026; actual observed latency varies. | Broad one-to-many viewing where a few seconds of delay is acceptable, including chat, polls, and synchronized overlays. |
| IVS real-time stage | Under 300 milliseconds, as stated in AWS IVS documentation accessed in 2026; actual observed latency varies. | Live co-hosting, audience members joining on stage, or interactions that depend on rapid turn-taking. |
AWS notes that observed latency can differ with streamer and viewer geography, network type and speed, and components in the streaming chain. Measure in the target regions and network conditions rather than treating a service threshold as the experience every user will receive.

Also separate participant media from audience playback. A host and a small number of participants may communicate through a real-time stage while a much larger audience watches a channel at low latency. Broadcasting a stage to a channel does not turn channel viewers into real-time participants; their playback still follows the channel delivery path.
Should you use WebRTC or HLS?
There is no universally best protocol or architecture in the available evidence. Start with the audience’s role and the product’s response-time requirement, then compare services against the workload you expect.
- Choose a real-time approach for evaluation when viewers need to speak, appear on camera, or respond in tightly timed exchanges. The media path must support participation, not only playback.
- Consider low-latency channel delivery when most people watch one-to-many and can tolerate a few seconds of delay. Chat and synchronized application controls can still make the experience interactive without making every viewer a real-time media participant.
- Evaluate HLS ingest deliberately when the priority is premium high-quality or high-resolution delivery and relatively higher latency is acceptable. YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance establishes this use case, but it is not a complete comparison of HLS and other delivery options.
When comparing providers or designs, assess end-to-end latency, ingest protocols, browser and device SDK support, playback scale, adaptive bitrate behavior, network resilience, chat and moderation, timed metadata synchronization, recording and video-on-demand workflow, integration effort, operations, and current service pricing. Commerce, advertising, and billing integrations need separate investigation; the capabilities described here do not establish particular providers or implementation details for those systems.

How do you add chat, polls, and synchronized overlays?
- Define the interaction in the application. Specify who may post or vote, what state is authoritative, how moderation works, and what should happen when a viewer reconnects or misses an event.
- Choose a timing mechanism. Use chat for conversational messages and a timed metadata mechanism for events that should align with playback, such as showing a poll or graphic at a particular stream moment. These features solve different problems.
- Deliver the trigger and maintain state separately. Treat timed metadata as a signal to display or update interface elements, not as the source of truth for poll totals, permissions, or user actions. Keep interaction state in the application systems responsible for it.
- Test synchronization in the real viewing path. A trigger is useful only if it appears at the intended point for the playback mode and viewer conditions you support. Check actual devices, regions, and network quality, including late joins and reconnects.
This model lets the video carry synchronized cues while the application remains responsible for semantics and state. It also avoids assuming that media transport alone supplies chat behavior, moderation policy, or durable interaction records.
How do shoppable overlays fit into a live stream?
A shoppable overlay can present a product card, donation prompt, or other call to action alongside the video. Timed metadata can help synchronize its appearance to a moment in playback, while application code renders the interface and handles the viewer’s selection.

For a production design, keep the path explicit: video timing supplies the cue; the application resolves the cue to current product or promotional data; a separate backend handles authorization and the transaction workflow. The cited AWS examples establish synchronized promotions and a retail design combining video, chat, and product data. They do not establish a payment processor, subscription billing approach, ad-insertion workflow, fulfillment design, or revenue outcome. Do not treat metadata as an order or payment system, and do not assume that adding an overlay will increase conversions.
What should you verify before implementation?
- Current SDK documentation: AWS materials returned conflicting IVS version signals: a versioned Web Broadcast SDK introduction identifies version 1.18.0 and was last updated September 24, 2026, while another official real-time guide references version 1.30.0. Verify the current release, browser support, and platform requirements in the documentation for the specific SDK you intend to use before pinning versions or following installation steps.
- Service cost: Obtain current pricing and model expected usage for concurrent viewers, stream duration, regions, and the interaction pattern. The capabilities discussed here do not establish a pricing estimate.
- Operational behavior: Test latency and playback under the target geography, network conditions, device mix, and complete streaming chain. Use those results to validate the product experience.
- Commerce and advertising: Investigate payment, paid-subscription, order-processing, fulfillment, and ad-insertion integrations separately before selecting a design or provider.
Build around the interaction your product needs
For a live product, decide first whether viewers are audience members, real-time participants, or both. Use a delivery path suited to that role, and build chat, polls, moderation, and commerce as application capabilities that coordinate with video rather than being mistaken for video features. Service-documented latency thresholds are useful starting points; the experience still needs validation in the regions and conditions your users will encounter.
