For Bootstrap 5.3, make a progress bar with a .progress wrapper carrying the progress-bar role and ARIA values, then put a .progress-bar inside it for the visible fill. Set the fill width to match the value, give the bar an accessible name, and use visible text or another cue if color or stripes convey status.
Start with the Bootstrap 5.3 markup
This is the current pattern documented by Bootstrap v5.3: the outer .progress element exposes the progress semantics, while the inner .progress-bar renders the fill.

<div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-label="Upload progress" aria-valuenow="75" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100">
<div class="progress-bar" style="width: 75%"></div>
</div>
Change the accessible name to describe the task, and keep the numeric value, minimum, maximum, and displayed fill aligned. If progress is 40 out of 100, for example, use aria-valuenow="40" and a 40% fill. Bootstrap’s Progress documentation explains the component structure and examples.

Do not copy the older structure into a v5.3 component
Bootstrap 5.3 moved the progressbar role and ARIA value attributes to the .progress wrapper. Earlier markup placed these semantics on the inner bar; Bootstrap marks that earlier structure deprecated, though it remains supported until v6. For new v5.3 code, use the wrapper pattern above.

Choose how to set the fill width
The visible fill needs a width that corresponds to the progress value. For a quick one-off example, use an inline style. For reusable widths, a utility class or custom CSS can be easier to maintain.
Inline width for a specific value
<div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-label="Installation progress" aria-valuenow="40" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100">
<div class="progress-bar" style="width: 40%"></div>
</div>
Width utility or custom class
Bootstrap’s width utilities can replace the inline style when their available increments suit the design. For arbitrary percentages or values generated by an application, a CSS width is more flexible:

<style>
.transfer-fill { width: 68%; }
</style>
Update the CSS width and ARIA value together when the progress changes; otherwise the visual and accessible representations disagree.
Adjust height and decide where the label belongs
Set the height on the .progress container. Its inner bar follows the container’s height, so you generally do not need to assign a separate height to .progress-bar.

<div class="progress-bar" style="width: 60%">60%</div>
</div>
A short label inside the fill can work when there is enough room and contrast. With a narrow fill, the text can clip, overlap, or become difficult to read. Bootstrap’s documentation advises placing a label outside the bar when it may overlap, for better accessibility.
<p id="upload-label">Upload progress: 8%</p>
<div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-labelledby="upload-label" aria-valuenow="8" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100">
<div class="progress-bar" style="width: 8%"></div>
</div>
Using aria-labelledby associates the progressbar with the visible text, avoiding a separate label that could drift out of sync.

Use color, stripes, and animation without losing meaning
Bootstrap documents background-color variants, striped fills, and animated stripes. These change the appearance, not the underlying progress value or accessible name. A color alone does not tell a screen-reader user what status the bar represents; keep a meaningful name and provide visible text or another non-color cue when status matters. Check that text and fills have sufficient contrast against their backgrounds.

- Semantic color: use a contextual background class when the color communicates a meaningful state, and provide a text cue as well.
- Stripes: add
.progress-bar-stripedto the inner bar for a striped treatment. - Animated stripes: add
.progress-bar-animatedalongside the striped class when motion is appropriate.
