How Hindsight organizes persistent memory
Hindsight models long-term information in four logical networks: world, experience, observation, and opinion. The distinction is intended to help separate objective facts from subjective beliefs. Its three central operations are retain for ingestion, recall for retrieval, and reflect for reasoning over stored information.

In the authors’ description, recall combines vector search, keyword matching, graph traversal, and temporal filtering, with PostgreSQL and pgvector as the backend. This means a later answer can be based on more than a semantic similarity match: relationships and time can also help shape what is retrieved. The mechanism does not guarantee that every relevant fact will be found or that every retrieved item is correct. The ACL 2026 paper describes the architecture and its evaluation.
Set a separate memory scope for each customer
Use a distinct memory bank for each customer rather than putting unrelated customer histories into one shared context. Hindsight’s per-user recipe uses this pattern, and its Cloud documentation describes banks scoped to different users, projects, or agents. A customer-specific bank gives the retain and recall steps a clear boundary: the conversation being saved and the memories supplied to a later answer belong to the same scope.

The bank is an organizing boundary, not evidence of a complete privacy or compliance solution. The cited materials do not establish customer-specific access controls, retention policies, regulatory compliance, or a particular CRM or meeting-platform integration. Those properties need to be designed and verified in the actual deployment.
Retain meeting records so statements keep their meaning
Meeting notes often contain short replies, references to earlier discussions, and statements from several people. Hindsight’s guidance on chat-log structure recommends preserving enough surrounding context to interpret a statement, identifying the speaker on each line, and including a real timestamp. For example, a transcript record should make clear who said each line and when, rather than presenting an unlabeled block of text.
Do not retain system instructions or memories injected into the conversation as if they were new customer statements. Otherwise, the stored record can blur the difference between what the customer actually said, what the assistant did, and what the assistant was reminded of from history. Use a stable document ID when a conversation changes
For a conversation that may be edited or extended, assign it a stable document identifier. Hindsight’s per-user recipe documents that retaining content again with the same document ID replaces the previous version. That upsert behavior lets an evolving conversation record be updated without treating every revision as a wholly separate conversation.
Choose identifiers that remain stable for the same conversation and distinct across conversations; do not reuse one ID for unrelated meetings. The recipe demonstrates the per-user retain-and-recall pattern in its Per-User Memory guide.
Recall before composing the next response
When a new customer message arrives, recall relevant information from that customer’s bank before asking the assistant to answer. Provide the retrieved context to the assistant alongside the new message, keeping the source and timing of that context clear. This makes persistent memory an explicit step in the response flow rather than an assumption that stored information will appear automatically.

- Identify the customer scope. Select the memory bank associated with the current customer or conversation context.
- Retrieve relevant history. Run recall against that bank for the current message or task.
- Supply the result as context. Include the relevant memories with the new message when composing the response.
- Retain the new conversation content. Save the meeting or exchange with its speaker labels, timestamps, and stable document ID where applicable.
The official recipe demonstrates this loop, but teams still need to inspect what recall returns and decide how the assistant should handle missing, ambiguous, or conflicting history.
Debug retrieval rather than assuming it worked
Hindsight Cloud documentation describes a retrieval debugging view for testing semantic, keyword, graph, and temporal retrieval methods, and for reviewing traces and relevance. Use it to check whether a customer’s earlier statement appears for the later question that depends on it, and whether the retrieved material has the correct speaker and time context. A stored fact that is not retrieved at the point of use cannot inform the answer.

Confirm compatibility with the actual client and validate the integration’s behavior; the documentation does not establish compatibility with every MCP-capable assistant. What published benchmark results do—and do not—show
The ACL 2026 abstract reports 83.6% accuracy on LongMemEval and 83.2% on LoCoMo with a 20B open-source model, and 91.4% on LongMemEval with Gemini-3 Pro. These are system authors’ reported benchmark results, not guarantees for a customer-memory deployment.
A separate arXiv preprint submitted December 14, 2025 reports 89.61% overall accuracy on LoCoMo with Gemini-3. That figure belongs to the preprint’s evaluation and model presentation; it should not be blended with the ACL abstract’s results. See the arXiv preprint for its evaluation context.

Benchmark accuracy does not by itself establish reliability for a team’s own transcripts, integrations, or customer workflows. Validate retrieval against representative conversations, including ambiguous statements, corrections, and references whose meaning depends on time or speaker identity.
