Build ecommerce customer loyalty by first delivering the experience customers expect, then making it easy and worthwhile for them to return. Rewards can reinforce repeat purchases, referrals, reviews, or subscriptions—but they work best when they change behavior rather than discounting purchases customers would have made anyway.
Customer retention and customer loyalty are related, but not identical
Retention is the practical outcome of bringing customers back for repeat purchases. Loyalty also describes a customer’s emotional connection to a store and willingness to advocate for it. A rewards program can support both, but points alone cannot make up for a poor product experience, unreliable fulfillment, confusing policies, or unhelpful support. Shopify discusses this distinction in its customer retention guide.

For an ecommerce store, the work has two parts: remove the reasons customers do not return, then give satisfied customers a relevant reason to choose the store again. The right program depends on what customers buy, how often they need it, the store’s margins, and which behavior the business wants to encourage.

Before adding incentives, look for gaps between what customers expected and what they received. Review product fit and quality, delivery and order updates, returns, customer support, and the usefulness of post-purchase communication. A points balance will not resolve a recurring problem with any of these.
#1 Best Overall
Make the post-purchase experience useful and clear: thank customers, provide relevant order information, explain how to get help, and offer a sensible next step when one exists. Shopify describes post-purchase journeys that can be tailored to a customer’s relationship with the store in its ecommerce retention guidance.
Choose the customer behavior you want to change
Pick one or two goals before designing rewards. A focused program is easier for customers to understand and easier for a store to evaluate. Possible goals include:
- Encouraging a first-time buyer to make a second purchase.
- Shortening the time between purchases when customers have a genuine reason to replenish or upgrade.
- Increasing successful referrals or subscription adoption.
- Recognizing sustained spending or useful participation, such as leaving an honest review.
Give each rewarded behavior an explicit business reason. If the goal is a second purchase, for example, a reward that is only useful after several purchases may be too distant to motivate a new customer.
Match rewards to the goal and the store’s economics
| Mechanic | Best suited to | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Points | Encouraging another purchase or making repeat buying feel cumulative. | Set earning and redemption thresholds that make the reward understandable and worthwhile while accounting for margin and normal purchase cadence. |
| Tiers | Recognizing sustained annual spend or repeat engagement. | Make progress and benefits clear. Possible benefits include early access, shipping benefits, or improved earn rates. |
| Experiential or VIP benefits | Giving customers something more distinctive than a discount. | Consider early access, community, or service benefits that are valuable to customers and practical for the store to deliver. |
| Referral rewards | Connecting retention spending with customer acquisition. | Reward successful referrals only when the referred customer’s value can justify the incentives offered to both participants. |
| Review or engagement rewards | Encouraging participation or feedback. | Never make a reward conditional on a positive review. Disclose incentives and follow the rules of the review platform. |
A loyalty program is a structured way to reward repeat purchases and other valuable behaviors, including referrals, reviews, subscriptions, and spending thresholds. Shopify outlines these approaches in its retention guide. The key economic question is whether an incentive changes customer behavior. If a discount goes to every existing customer, the store may give away margin on purchases that would have happened without the program.

Estimate the cost of earning and redeeming rewards before launch. Consider how a reward affects contribution after product, fulfillment, and incentive costs—not just whether it encourages an order. Design point thresholds around the store’s normal repurchase cadence and the margin available to fund rewards.
Make the program easy to understand and use
Explain how customers join, earn, redeem, and track progress. Put the reward value, rules, exclusions, and expiration terms where customers can find them. If customers need to decipher complicated conditions or cannot tell how close they are to a reward, the program is less useful.
Make earning and redemption work across the channels where the store serves customers. Shopify describes loyalty apps that can use customer data to connect online and in-store activity so customers can earn or redeem across channels; it names Smile, Yotpo, and LoyaltyLion as examples, not as independent recommendations. Capabilities and integrations change, so confirm current availability with each provider before choosing one.

Customer segments and post-purchase journeys can help a store send messages that fit a customer’s history and likely needs. A replenishment reminder may suit someone who has bought a consumable; a product update may be more relevant to someone who owns an earlier model. Avoid sending the same promotion to every customer simply because it is easy to automate.

Shopify illustrates segment-specific messaging with a store identifying previous buyers before a replacement subscription became available and sending them a targeted offer. That example shows how customer history can inform a message; it does not establish that the same approach will produce a particular result for another store.
Measure repeat behavior and reward cost
Record a baseline before launch, then review results over a period that reflects the product’s normal repurchase cycle. A short window may miss purchases for products customers replace only occasionally. Where practical, compare customer cohorts or segments and account for seasonality and differences in buying patterns.
- Repeat purchase rate: Are more customers buying again?
- Time between purchases: Is the interval changing in a way that fits the product and customer need?
- Redemption: Are rewards being used, and what does redemption cost?
- Referral activity: Are referred customers completing purchases, and can their value support the incentives?
- Contribution after rewards: Does the program leave the store with a sustainable return after incentive costs?
Interpret these measures together. High redemption by itself does not show that the program created incremental purchases; customers may simply be using discounts on orders they would have placed anyway. Shopify’s retention guidance covers measurement and retention strategies, while its loyalty guidance emphasizes the need to account for reward economics.
Results will vary with product, purchase cadence, margin, customer mix, and program design. Avoid treating a single benchmark as a promised outcome for every store.

Keep review requests honest
Invite feedback broadly from eligible customers rather than selecting only people expected to leave positive reviews. Do not condition an incentive explicitly or implicitly on favorable sentiment, and disclose an incentive because it may affect how readers assess a review. Also check the rules of the specific review platform; some platforms prohibit incentivized reviews.
The Federal Trade Commission’s guide for marketers explains review solicitation and incentives. Its guide for platforms says: “Don’t prevent or discourage people from submitting negative reviews.” The FTC states that its Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule went into effect on October 21, 2024. Legal obligations depend on the circumstances; consult current FTC materials and seek appropriate legal advice for a specific situation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose loyalty software for the work it needs to do
Software can help administer balances and reward rules, organize customer segments, and support earning or redemption across channels. Shopify names Smile, Yotpo, and LoyaltyLion as examples of apps that can work with customer data for loyalty activity. Those examples do not establish comparative performance, current pricing, or suitability for every store.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Ecommerce platform, point-of-sale, email, and customer-data compatibility | Integrations determine whether the program can use the customer information and selling channels the store relies on. |
| Supported reward mechanics | Confirm that the software supports the intended mix, such as points, tiers, referrals, or non-purchase actions. |
| Cross-channel earning and redemption | Customers should be able to understand and use rewards wherever the store offers them. |
| Reporting | Useful reporting helps the store assess repeat behavior and reward cost, rather than only sign-ups or points issued. |
| Rules and support administration | Staff need a workable way to maintain terms and resolve customer questions about balances and redemptions. |
| Total cost at the store’s order volume | Subscription fees and program costs need to fit the store’s economics. |
Pricing, integrations, capabilities, and partner terms vary and change; confirm them with the provider for the store’s platform and expected volume.

Improve what is not working before increasing incentives
If customers are not returning, use support conversations, feedback, and purchase patterns to identify the cause. Product mismatch, fulfillment problems, difficult returns, or unclear follow-up may need attention before a larger discount does. A stronger loyalty offer cannot reliably repair a weak experience; fix the friction, then assess whether a reward can support the behavior the store wants to encourage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get ecommerce customers to come back?
Fix problems with the product, fulfillment, support, returns, and post-purchase communication first. Then use relevant follow-up and, where it fits the store’s economics, a reward tied to a specific next behavior.
What rewards should I offer repeat customers?
Choose a reward that matches the goal and customer need: points for a next purchase, tiers for sustained spend, experiential benefits for differentiation, or referral rewards for successful referrals. Set the value and conditions with margin and purchase cadence in mind.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I reward customers for reviews?
If you offer an incentive, do not condition it on a positive review, disclose it, solicit broadly from eligible customers, and check the review platform’s rules. Some platforms prohibit incentivized reviews.
When should an ecommerce store add a loyalty program?
A program is most useful when the store can identify a behavior to improve, deliver a dependable customer experience, and fund rewards without routinely discounting purchases that would have happened anyway.
