What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can process a user-selected file entirely in browser code and let the user download the result without sending the file to a server. The key is to design and verify the whole application—not just its conversion function—so file contents and derived data are not transmitted. A page can run its main task locally and still make other network requests.
What “browser-only” and “local-first” actually mean
A browser-only file tool reads a file the user selects, performs its work in browser code, then presents the result for download or saving. The application itself may still be delivered by a web server. “Local-first” describes where the work and working data happen; it does not, by itself, prove that the file never leaves the device.

Separate three questions in both the architecture and the product’s privacy explanation:
- Where does processing happen? Client-side code can remove the need to send the selected file to a server for the operation.
- What data leaves the browser? The file, derived output, telemetry and app state each need consideration. A locally executed converter could still be surrounded by code that sends data elsewhere.
- Where does the result go? A downloaded file is user-owned output; data in the browser’s origin-private storage is not a normal file the user can find in a folder.
A precise promise is more useful than “100% private”: explain whether the selected file and its contents are sent over the network, and separately describe any unrelated communications the app makes.

Which browser storage and file interface should you choose?
Start with the simplest interface that completes the task. The options below serve different purposes; they are not interchangeable versions of the same file system.
| Approach | Where the data is | How access and saving work | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| File input and download | The user selects an input; the generated output is downloaded as an ordinary file. | Selection and download are explicit. Output is generally a new download, not a seamless overwrite of the selected file. | One-off conversions and a broad fallback flow. It does not reproduce direct folder access or full desktop-style open-and-save behavior. |
| File System Access API | The user-selected files or folders are visible in the user’s file system. | A picker is opened through a user gesture in a secure context. Writing to an existing file requires permission; saving a new file lets the user choose a name and location. | Editors that benefit from direct user-file workflows. Support varies, so detect the specific method and keep a fallback. |
| Origin private file system (OPFS) | Data is private to the site’s origin and is not exposed as an ordinary visible folder. | The app can use it for working data without a conventional file picker. Browser storage quotas apply, and clearing site data removes it. | App state, caches and performance-sensitive local work—not the user’s only copy of an important result. |
These distinctions are described in Chrome for Developers’ File System Access API guide, published August 19, 2024, and in MDN’s living documentation for the File System API and OPFS. Browser support and storage limits can change; verify the methods and behavior in the browsers you intend to support.

How can a web app read a file without uploading it?
For a simple task, a file input gives the user control over which file to provide. Browser code can read the selected file, process its contents, create a Blob for the result and offer that Blob as a download. No upload is needed for that flow. This small example converts a selected text file to uppercase; it is intentionally limited to text files and is not a general binary-file converter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems<input id="file" type="file" accept="text/plain">
<button id="convert" type="button" disabled>Convert and download</button>
<script>
const fileInput = document.querySelector("#file");
const convertButton = document.querySelector("#convert");
fileInput.addEventListener("change", () => {
convertButton.disabled = !fileInput.files.length;
});
convertButton.addEventListener("click", async () => {
const file = fileInput.files[0];
if (!file) return;
const text = await file.text();
const output = new Blob([text.toUpperCase()], { type: "text/plain" });
const url = URL.createObjectURL(output);
const link = document.createElement("a");
link.href = url;
link.download = "converted-" + file.name;
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
});
</script>
That code shows a local read-process-download path, not proof about a complete deployed site. In a real app, inspect the libraries, scripts, analytics and other runtime behavior as well as the conversion code. For richer open-and-save workflows, the File System Access API can return handles and support writing after permission is granted. Feature-detect the particular picker method you need rather than assuming support from a browser’s brand name.

When do workers, WebAssembly and OPFS help?
Workers for computation that could block the page
Large or CPU-intensive operations can make an interface unresponsive if they run on the main page thread. A worker moves that work off the interface thread. It adds coordination and memory-management complexity, so use it when the workload warrants it rather than as a privacy badge. Synchronous OPFS access handles are restricted to dedicated workers, according to MDN and Chrome’s guide.
WebAssembly for client-side computational code
WebAssembly can run computational tools in the browser, including code built for that environment. It can be one component of a local-processing design, but using WebAssembly does not establish that files remain local, prove the rest of the app is safe, or guarantee acceptable performance on every device.

OPFS for working data, not the user’s only copy
OPFS is useful when an application needs origin-private working files or state. It is not a conventional folder, is subject to browser quotas and may be deleted when the user clears site storage. Make the distinction visible: “saved in this browser” does not mean “saved as a file you can find in your folder.” Give users an explicit export or save route when they need durable, user-owned output.

The File System Access API is designed around user control: its picker is triggered by a user gesture in a secure context, and the user can cancel. Saving a new file asks for a name and location; changing an existing file requires explicit write permission. Chrome for Developers describes availability across most Chromium browsers while noting exceptions, but support details are volatile. Check current target browsers and detect the specific methods at runtime.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Keep the task available when a richer method is missing, without implying the fallback does exactly the same thing:
- Use a file input to approximate opening a file.
- Offer a generated download to approximate saving output.
- Explain when a fallback cannot select a directory, write back to the original file or reproduce the richer workflow.
The file input-and-download route is a practical baseline for simple tools; it is not a complete polyfill for directory access or overwrite behavior.
How do you make a no-upload claim credible?
Treat “never uploads your files” as a property of the complete running application. Local execution of the main operation only establishes that the operation can happen in the browser; it does not establish that no other request carries file content or derived data. Review the network behavior of the deployed app, including code and dependencies that run alongside the file operation, and make the scope of the claim clear.
- Define the promise: State what happens to the selected file, derived output, telemetry and app state instead of relying on a vague “private” label.
- Assess the full runtime: Account for scripts and third-party code as well as your own processing logic. Unrelated network activity may exist even when file processing is local.
- Keep access narrow: Ask for access only to the files or locations the task needs. Delay write permission until the user requests a save operation.
- Make writes understandable: Explain what will be changed before the user grants write access, and make the save action clear.
- Offer a durable export: Do not let an OPFS copy appear to be the user’s only permanent result.
Permission prompts are a control, not a guarantee against abuse. The File System Access API’s security and privacy considerations, and the USENIX Security 2023 paper The File System Access API: A Security Analysis, address risks including deceptive permission requests and file overwrite or encryption scenarios. Those findings concern the threat models studied; they are a reason to design cautiously, not evidence that every file tool behaves maliciously.
An August 2026 arXiv preprint, The Web-CLI: Verifiable Privacy for Tools, Models, and Inference Engines in the Browser, proposes an offline-capable, zero-egress architecture and describes examples involving WebAssembly, local inference and GPU-backed processing. It is preprint research, not a browser-standard guarantee or certification for other applications.
