The report shows Google Search performance by market; it does not prove that hreflang is correct or explain why traffic changed. For larger-scale row coverage, use Search Console’s daily BigQuery bulk export instead of treating the API as a complete inventory.
Decide what the report needs to answer
Start with decisions, not dimensions. A useful first report answers whether target markets are gaining or losing clicks, which locale landing pages earn impressions but few clicks, and whether device mix differs by market. Search Analytics provides clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position, and can group rows by country, page, query, device, and date.

For a practical landing-page view, request country and page. Add device when device mix could change an editorial or technical decision; use query for focused investigation rather than making every report a high-cardinality country-page-query-device combination. More dimensions produce more granular rows, but they also make requests costlier and results harder to interpret.

Build the recurring Search Analytics API workflow
1. Select the right property and authorize access
Call the Search Analytics query method for the Search Console property that matches your reporting boundary. The API supports the read-only webmasters.readonly authorization scope. Choose deliberately: a property’s URL coverage may not align neatly with each language or country version, so do not assume every locale is a separate property.

2. Request a defined window and only useful dimensions
Set explicit start and end dates; the request must cover at least one day. For market performance, group by country. Add page to see landing URLs within each market. Use query or device in separate, targeted requests when those breakdowns will inform a decision. When date is included as a dimension, days with no data are omitted, so an absent date row alone does not establish a pipeline failure.
For period comparisons, keep the current and comparison windows consistent in length and grouping. A recurring implementation can run daily or weekly, fetch the new or changed window, retain dated outputs, and calculate comparisons from stored data. This is an operational design choice, not a built-in Google schedule. It also avoids repeatedly fetching unchanged periods, which Google advises against in its quota guidance.
3. Page through results without mistaking pagination for completeness
The API allows a maximum rowLimit of 25,000 rows per request and uses startRow for pagination. However, pagination does not remove Search Console’s internal top-row limitation. Google’s API reference says: “The API is bounded by internal limitations of Search Console and does not guarantee to return all data rows but rather top ones.” Results are sorted by clicks, so a query-level report should be presented as top results, not a complete query inventory.

Keep requests within quota and control their cost
Google’s quota documentation, last updated August 28, 2025, lists 1,200 Search Analytics queries per minute per site and 1,200 per minute per user. Those request-rate figures are not a reason to issue repeated broad pulls: Google also applies load limits. Grouping or filtering by page or query consumes more load, page-plus-query is especially expensive, and longer date ranges raise query load.
- Request only dimensions that answer a reporting question.
- Prefer focused date windows and persist results for comparisons.
- Monitor quota and back off or reduce request scope when limits are approached.
- Do not treat the 25,000-row request maximum as a promise that all matching rows will be returned.
Choose the API or BigQuery based on required coverage
| Approach | What it provides | Important limit or setup |
|---|---|---|
| Search Analytics API | On-demand grouped performance rows for selected date ranges and dimensions. | Maximum 25,000 rows per request, with internal top-row limits; all rows are not guaranteed. |
| Search Console bulk export to BigQuery | Daily ongoing export of Search Console performance data for larger-scale reporting. | Excludes anonymized queries; it is not subject to the daily data row limit. Property owners configure the export. |
The API is suitable when focused reporting and its bounded row coverage meet the need. If the reporting program needs greater detail at scale, Google’s bulk data export sends data to BigQuery daily and is not affected by the daily data row limit, though anonymized queries are excluded. Setup involves enabling the BigQuery API, granting the Search Console service account permission, and configuring the destination in Search Console; only property owners can set up the export.

For deeper joined analysis, Google recommends exporting Search Console and Google Analytics data to BigQuery and merging them. See Using Search Console and Google Analytics Data for SEO. BigQuery is an optional scale-up path, not a prerequisite for an API-based report.
Interpret country performance alongside locale implementation
Search Console’s country dimension describes Google Search traffic by country. It is an outcome measure, not a validation report for international targeting. A change in clicks or impressions by country can have multiple explanations; country metrics alone cannot establish that hreflang, a URL change, or another implementation detail caused it.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Google distinguishes multilingual sites, which offer content in multiple languages, from multi-regional sites, which explicitly target countries or regions; a site can be both. Its guidance on managing multilingual and multi-regional sites recommends distinct URLs for language versions. To help Google understand locale variants, localized page versions can be indicated with HTML annotations, HTTP headers, or XML sitemaps. Versions should reference themselves and their alternates; x-default can identify a fallback for unmatched languages.
Check the locale URL architecture and hreflang implementation separately from the traffic dashboard. Google warns that locale-adaptive pages may not all be crawled, indexed, or ranked, and recommends explicit locale URLs with alternate or hreflang annotations rather than relying only on IP-based adaptation. See How Google Crawls Locale-Adaptive Pages.
Quick Recap
Read the report without overclaiming
- Compare markets using country, and inspect locale landing URLs using page.
- Use clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position as performance measures; compare consistent date windows.
- Use device or query breakdowns only when they support a specific diagnostic or editorial decision.
- Label API query and page reports as bounded top-row data, not exhaustive inventories.
- Investigate implementation separately when a market shift raises questions about locale URLs or hreflang.
