Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can build a small Flask news-site prototype and deploy it publicly without paying at the outset. One documented route is Render: use Flask for routes and templates, Gunicorn as the production WSGI server, and Render’s free web-service tier. That tier sleeps after inactivity and has an ephemeral filesystem, so it is suitable for learning, testing, or a preview—not a dependable live newsroom.
What you are building
Flask provides the web framework, not a ready-made newsroom. Its routes connect URLs to Python functions, while templates render pages. For example, a homepage route could display a list of stories and a detail route could display one story. Flask’s Quickstart explains how routes and templates work, including template inheritance for shared elements such as a header, navigation, and footer.

You still need to choose how stories are represented, grouped into categories, stored, and published. Flask does not prescribe a news content model or editorial workflow. For an initial prototype, keep the feature set small: a homepage, individual story pages, and shared layout templates.

Prepare the Flask app for deployment
Use a production WSGI server
Do not expose Flask’s built-in development server as the public server. Flask says it is not designed to be efficient, stable, or secure for production use; its production deployment overview describes the need for a production WSGI server. Render’s Flask quickstart uses Gunicorn, so this walkthrough uses that combination.

Set a production secret key
If your app uses Flask sessions, replace any development secret key with a random production value before deploying. Flask’s deployment tutorial warns that a known development key could let an attacker modify the session cookie. Keep the production key out of public source code.
Deploy with Render’s Flask quickstart
Render’s documented Flask deployment uses a linked source repository and a web service. The exact commands below assume your repository has a top-level app.py file containing a Flask application object named app; adapt the start command if your module or object has a different name.
-
Put the project in a Git repository. Include the Flask app and a
requirements.txtfile listing its dependencies, including Gunicorn.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Create a Render web service connected to the repository. Select the branch you want Render to deploy.
-
Enter the documented build settings. Set the language to
Python 3and the build command topip install -r requirements.txt. -
Set the start command. For the assumed
app.pymodule andappobject, usegunicorn app:app. The value before the colon is the Python module; the value after it is the Flask application object. -
Deploy and open the service URL. Render assigns an
onrender.comURL. After the initial setup, pushes to the linked branch trigger builds and deployments.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
See Render’s Flask deployment guide for its current setup flow. A custom domain is optional; Render’s free-service documentation says free web services can use a custom domain and managed TLS.

What Render’s free tier means for a news site
These are Render’s documented limits accessed on October 4, 2026; they are properties of that hosting plan, not of Flask. Check Render’s free-tier documentation for current terms before deploying.
| Limit | What it means for your site |
|---|---|
| Spins down after 15 minutes without inbound traffic; waking takes about one minute, according to Render. | The first visitor after a quiet period may wait for the service to start. |
| Ephemeral filesystem; free web services cannot attach persistent disks. | Files written locally—including uploaded images and SQLite data—can disappear when the service restarts, redeploys, or spins down. |
| 750 free instance hours per workspace per calendar month, according to Render’s current limits. | If the allowance is exhausted, free web services are suspended until the next month. |
| One instance maximum for free web services, according to Render. | You cannot scale this service beyond one instance on the free tier. |
| Free Render Postgres databases expire 30 days after creation, according to Render’s current limits. | That database option is not durable long-term storage for a publication. |
For a proof of concept, avoid treating the service’s local filesystem as permanent storage. Version-controlled seed content is one simple way to make a demo’s articles available again after a redeploy; it is not a publishing workflow for frequently changing newsroom content. Any separate database or media-storage service needs its own durability, cost, and suitability checks.
Is free hosting suitable for a live newsroom?
Render explicitly says its free instances are intended for testing, hobby projects, or previewing the platform and says, “Do not use them for production applications.” For a news site that readers depend on, the cold-start delay, single-instance ceiling, storage behavior, and suspension after the monthly allowance make the free service a poor reliability foundation.

Their current free-plan terms are not established here, so there is no basis to rank them or promise that any offers a better free production option. Compare providers by idle behavior, durable database and media storage, quota and what happens when it runs out, deployment command, and the reliability your site needs.
