Google describes optimization for generative AI search as SEO—not a separate set of guaranteed “AEO” or “GEO” tricks—and says no third-party tool can promise placement in its AI answers.
What SEO tools can—and cannot—do for AI visibility
“LLM optimization,” “AI search visibility,” “AEO,” and “GEO” are terms people use for improving or measuring presence in AI-powered search experiences. Google’s guidance is that the underlying work remains SEO: publish useful, distinctive content and make pages crawlable and eligible to appear. It does not establish a separate set of magic tactics for generative AI results. Google’s generative AI guidance also cautions against unsupported hacks.

Tools serve different purposes. First-party search services report what their own platforms expose, while commercial suites support research, audits, and content workflows. A third-party visibility score is a vendor-defined measurement, not a universal ranking or a window into a platform’s internal systems. Google says third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems and cannot guarantee performance. Google’s guidance on third-party SEO tools is a useful standard for evaluating such claims.
Start with the two first-party reporting tools
| Tool | What it measures | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Generative AI performance report | Discovery through Google Search and Discover AI features | Check Google’s own reporting for your site | Requires indexability and compliance; eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report | Pages cited, visibility trends, and grounding queries in AI-generated answers across Microsoft Copilot and partner experiences | See reported citations and trends across Bing’s covered AI experiences | Applies to content eligible for indexing; expanded analysis capabilities are previews |
Google Search Console
Use the Generative AI performance report to inspect discovery through Google Search and Discover AI features. Google said worldwide rollout to all websites was complete as of August 31, 2026. The report inherits ordinary Search Console data limits, so treat it as a platform-specific reporting view rather than a complete record of every way a person may encounter your content. See Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report documentation.
#1 Best Overall
Before interpreting an absence of reported visibility as a content problem, check the fundamentals: the page must be indexable and comply with Google’s requirements, and even an eligible page is not guaranteed to be crawled, indexed, or served in an AI feature. Google’s generative AI search guide explains the eligibility context.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing’s AI Performance report covers pages cited, visibility trends, and grounding queries in AI-generated answers across Microsoft Copilot and partner experiences. Its reporting applies to content eligible for indexing. Details are in Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance help.
Rank #2
Bing announced expanded Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare features in a global preview on June 16, 2026. They are intended to help group context and thematic query patterns and compare citation presence over time. Because these capabilities were described as previews, do not assume they are universally available or treat their output as a settled benchmark. See Bing’s announcement of expanded AI visibility insights.

Add a conventional SEO suite for a defined workflow
A paid SEO platform can be useful when you need help finding topics, assessing content coverage, or managing audits—not because it has privileged access to Google’s AI systems. Ahrefs documents AI keyword suggestions, search-intent grouping, translations, content coverage grading against SERP competitors, and AI-assisted audit fixes. Access varies by plan and add-on; check Ahrefs’ feature documentation for the current details.
Rank #3
These are research and content-production workflows. They should not be confused with first-party reporting of AI citations or visibility. Google’s explanation of third-party tool limits applies when evaluating claims that a commercial suite can reveal or guarantee performance inside Google’s systems: Google’s third-party tools guidance.
When a specialist AI visibility monitor is worth considering
A specialist monitor may be useful if you need repeatable sampling of prompts or queries across engines, citation/source reporting, or a longer trend history than first-party reports provide. The available evidence does not establish a best vendor or a reliable head-to-head comparison, so choose by the decision the data will support rather than by a single visibility score.
- Engine coverage: Confirm which platforms and AI surfaces are actually sampled.
- Measurement method: Ask how prompts or queries are selected, how often they are checked, and what counts as a citation or appearance.
- Evidence and history: Look for cited sources, reproducible queries, and trend records rather than a score without an explanation.
- Actionability: Identify the editorial or technical change a result could justify; otherwise the monitoring may add little value.
- Validation: Compare vendor claims with official platform guidance and first-party reports where available.
A vendor estimate can be informative for its own defined sample, but it is not platform truth. Google’s guidance says external tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems, and their results cannot guarantee performance. Read the guidance before relying on claims about Google visibility.

- Site owner: Begin with Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Use their reports to understand platform-reported discovery and citations before paying for another layer.
- SEO practitioner: Add a conventional SEO suite when keyword research, intent grouping, competitor content coverage, or audit work is a recurring need. Keep those workflows distinct from first-party AI reporting.
- Marketing team: Consider specialist monitoring only when you need structured cross-engine sampling and can use its source-level findings to make a content decision. Record its methodology and treat its metrics as vendor-specific.
When comparing options, assess data provenance, engine and surface coverage, measures reported, sampling method, feature or preview limits, cost, and whether the output changes a real editorial decision. The available documentation does not establish a universal winner or current comparative prices.

Build visibility on the content and indexing foundation
Measurement cannot substitute for eligibility or useful content. Google’s guidance emphasizes distinctive, people-first material and clear technical structure; eligible pages still are not guaranteed to appear. Start by ensuring important pages can be crawled and indexed, then make them genuinely useful rather than producing commodity text to satisfy a presumed AI formula. Google’s guide to AI features in Search sets out its recommendations.
Use first-party reports to observe what each platform reports, and commercial tools for the research or workflow they specifically support. No tool in this stack can guarantee inclusion in an AI-generated answer.
